《Renegade's Redemption: Dust》[Vol 1 Ch 12] Fight and Flight

Talon’s POV
In my muscles and my lungs burned a forest fire. Others might have collapsed, exhausted and pained, but not me. Instead the fire drove me to fight more ferociously, to strike back harder.
I gripped the monster’s immense horn, as large as myself, and used all my strength to hold the beast down on the ground-- perhaps even break its horn. But the shiny black armor covering it was too tough by far. Smoke rose where my hands touched its armor, but it just wouldn’t die. It only grew more enraged. With an ear-shattering screech it whipped its head and tossed me through the air. Stars flickered in and out of my vision when I hit one of the ancient trees back-first. The behemoth rhinoceros beetle approached, clicking and hissing as though it were cursing me.
I tried to get back up, but my body moved too damn slowly. All I could do was brace for its attack.
A figure burst from the trees and grabbed the monster’s horn, slowing it down. It gave me enough time to regain my footing-- and then I realized just what was so wrong about this picture.
“Wait, what the fuck!?” I blurted out. “What are you doing here?”
“Saving your life,” the Greshan snorted.
I reassumed my fighting stance. “Unnecessary. I don’t need your help and never did, Greshan dog.”
“It’s Elian! Eh! Lie! In! If anyone should be givin’ nicknames, it’d be me, since I don’t even know yours ye--”
“Shut. Up! Is now really the time for meaningless chatter!?” As the Greshan kept the bug more or less in place, I slammed my palm into its hard carapace again, just beside the eye. The Greshan gasped at the heat radiating from me. The monster bucked and shrieked as the meat within the carapace cooked, but the Greshan held on tightly.

“Oi, watch where ya swing that! And a thank you would be nice!”
“I didn’t ask you for your help. You will only get in the way. Cheap tricks do nothing here!”
“Maybe ya didn’t ask, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need-- wagh!!”
The monster flicked up the shell covering its translucent wings. With a rumble I felt in my chest, its wings began to vibrate, and it slowly lifted off into the air-- with Elian clinging to it. His hazel eyes widened and he looked to me.
Fucking idiot. I didn’t ask for his help, and now this happens. Before the monster ascended too high from the ground, I reached out for the fool, until something knocked me out of the way.
A blur in green and brown pushed me aside and leaped for the monster. “ELIAN!” it screamed, reaching… only to fall short, as the monster ascended several feet from the ground. She stopped and stood, trembling with emotion as she gazed up at the airborne beast climbing higher and higher, and her friend now clinging to it for dear life.
She was thin, to the point I briefly mistook her for one of my own people, but her red hair, green eyes, and the freckles splashed across her pale white skin were all Greshan features. She was clad in a dress in the Greshan style. Upon seeing her, I could barely contain my rage.
“Why were you two even here!?” I snapped. “Are you so daft as to play hero in the Deep Woods of all places? Do you realize how dangerous it is? Are you two completely without sense!?”
She flinched, then returned my glare. Tears gathered in the corners of her eyes. The girl opened her mouth to speak, only to choke on her own words, finishing with an emotional groan. I rolled my eyes. Without another word, I took up my war bow and strung it.

My brand new bow, made with the phoenix’s feathers and bones. As I drew the bowstring, magical energy danced along my fingertips, causing them to tingle as though electrified. Echoes of the phoenix’s magic and soul, contained within the feather and bone, which I called upon now. I squinted at the shrinking silhouette of Elian and the monster, and aimed.
The girl grabbed my arm. “What are you doing!? What the fuck!”
Elian, why did you need to bring your girlfriend here!? She’s going to get us all killed! “Don’t. Touch. Me.” I bared my teeth at her.
“Do you know why so few from your city and my tribe are allowed in the Deep Woods? Why no one has ever seen the Land of the Gods?” I demanded as I leaned towards her, a predatory grin crossing my face. “It’s because if you venture too deep in, the landscape comes alive and moves. The curse of Hallow Zaya, they say. No one has ever managed to navigate it, and even skilled hunters can become lost and starve. If the monster gets too far away, you will never. See your friend. Again.”
“So you’re going to kill him!? Are you insane!?” she shrieked.
“He’s a warrior. If he’s strong, he’ll survive. And if he’s not… better than starving.”
“No! No! No it’s not!” her weak fist slammed into my chest as the tears in her eyes flowed freely. “Th-that’s not how people work! He’ll die from that height! You’ll kill him, you heartless bastard! You’ll-- you’ll kill him…”
She hit my chest, again and again, sobbing and hiccuping. I ignored her and looked back up at the sky, where I saw my fears confirmed. The monster, and Elian, were now tiny in the sky. It was unlikely I’d be able to hit them from this distance.
I pushed her off me. “Well then. What do you suggest we do?” I asked.
“There must be another way,” she insisted.
I rolled my eyes. “Wonderful! Our two first options are no longer feasible because of you, and your sobbing and screaming does nothing to help. So I’m all ears; show me this miraculous ‘other way’.” I planted my hands on my hips and waited, as she fidgeted beneath my cold gaze.

The original version of the first book was published on RR in 2019 and has since seen multiple revisions based on reader feedback with this one as the final and official fourth version before the second book. While the entire series story has undergone major changes in the last year, all books have been planned since the beginning of writing. It is also my second wish to eventually make this story into a webcomic, either by myself or with a team if possible. Thank you for taking this journey with me, and enjoy reading! ( You can alternatively read books in the series as standalone fictions, but they connect to one another though a running theme and mystery that evolves and progresses with the main character. ) Alternate Blurb for the Singularity Cycle series: Essairyn had never felt truly alive on Earth. It felt like something was missing ever since she was born, but even after nearly 20 years of mundane living, she could never pinpoint what this or the emptiness in her heart was. Suddenly, she awakens in a grandiose, primordial forest and encounters mythical creatures beyond her restless imagination in a parallel world called Sol'h'meyr. She befriends, in particular, a sassy fox-spirit named Akari who reincarnated after three millennia. Essairyn is gifted with abnormal magic, and Akari is being chased by those of her dark past. Together, they set out on an adventure in a world more dangerous than its beautiful facade could hide. Finding new friends along a path riddled with tragedy, Essairyn must learn who to trust as deceit and betrayal lie behind kindly faces. Life in this deceptively promising world slowly spirals down a path of no return. This is not a game, but cruel reality. Her simple adventure became the modest beginnings in a chain of disruptions that tore even the dimensional fabric of time and space. No one, not even Essairyn, was who she thought they were. And not even the fickle gods could change the time-worn destiny of the universes... A single promise shook eternity’s existence.

Shaman
*** Let's get this clear now: the MC is a trans woman. This is not a gender-bender. It's set in a fantasy world but the exploration of identity and gender is reality-based. Not a joke, not a kinky turn-on. If this is a problem for you, please just act like an adult and look elsewhere for something to read. *** Rating breakdown, since that should be public info: 2 x 5*, 1 x 4.5*, 1 x 3*, no reasons offered. A human shaman and healer returns from several years with the mysterious shyani, accompanied by her shapeshifting puma best friend. A valued friend, from her previous identity as a male student physician, has acquired an old shyani book, and extremists will not tolerate its presence in human hands. But back in human lands, the question arises: which world does she belong in? Generations ago, human explorers found a continent inhabited by an utterly alien culture of shapeshifting weyres and the shyani, humanoids who prefer dusk and dawn. A truce of sorts was eventually reached: humans claimed the rich lowlands, and the shyani and weyres retain the highlands. Along the border, practicality often rules, but on either side, old grudges linger in some hearts. As a student physician, Corin tried to take his own life, unable to bear the countless tiny wounds inflicted over twenty-one years of lying to himself in order to be, or pretend to be, socially acceptable. At the last improbable instant, intervention came, in the form of a spirit fox, who led him away from the existence he’d known in the lowlands and into the highlands. There, a puma weyre rescued him, and a shyani shaman helped him find his true self and offered a rebirth, a life with no more lies, and an important role to fill. Now a shaman and healer in her own right, Vixen who was once Corin learns that the one human who mattered to her in her previous life, then a fellow University student, has come into possession of an old shyani book, and the more fanatical shyani and weyres will stop at nothing to reclaim it and punish Jared. Even though it means going back into the lowlands and facing Jared as a woman, she can’t bear to just look the other way. This should be a short visit, just long enough to see the book into the proper hands and make sure Jared will not be killed for having it, and then she can return to the shyani community that has accepted her as their shaman. And, of course, her feline best friend Dayr insists on coming with her. But Jared is now a Lord, with considerable wealth and power, and his response to her presence isn’t one she expected. After years living with the shyani, she sees everything around her from a new perspective, and that makes it difficult to keep to the plan of making as few waves as possible. As an honoured guest in a highborn house, with only Jared aware that she has ever been anyone else, Vixen finds herself questioning where she belongs: with Dayr and the shyani, who accept her gender without question but have to make allowances for her differences, or with humans, in the culture she grew up in even though her past would mean a major scandal? *** Trigger warning: there are scenes of Vixen's previous life, which include some difficult moments and culminate in an (obviously unsuccessful) attempt at suicide before she finds her true self and a better life. Please be careful! This is the ONLY reason for the "Traumatising Content" tag.*** Complete stand-alone novel, 96K words. Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
