《How I Became A Jarl》Journey To New Land pt. 4

I haven’t slept in that comfortable bed in a long time! When I lived with my parents. I couldn’t afford anything better the way I lived. Also, Astvar left to meet the king alone so I could lay in bed till he returned. I could… if not for those soldiers training so loudly! Do you really need to scream that loudly when you throw a spear?! I’m going to lose my mind!
Maybe… I’ll just go eat something in the city. Somewhere far away from their training ground… When I thought I wouldn’t see them anymore I couldn’t be more wrong. They were everywhere! Was it the same way yesterday? I can remember! Astvar talked too much so I didn’t focus that much on what was around me. I walked into the first restaurant without guards that I saw. For a second I forgot I was in the world of Vikings. It was a very colorful restaurant. There even was a menu curved on the wooden sign and I can tell someone took their time for this to look good.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. There is more food than just simple stew, potatoes, and meat. There are normal things from the earth! Dumplings?! Pancakes?! FISH AND CHIPS WITH VINEGAR?! Am I seeing right?!
[ Waitress ]
“Hi! Can I take your order?”
[ Eric ]
“Umm… Yes! I’ll take Fish and Chips, and two fruit dumplings.”
[ Waitress ]
“Yhm. Would you like something to drink?”
[ Eric ]
“Uhm…” I didn’t even notice that there is another menu for drinks! “I’ll take apple juice.”
It was right in front of my eyes. Fish and chips! Dumplings! And apple juice! It looks good! But will it taste good? YES, IT WILL. With my first bite, I felt those good almost crispy chips, well-cooked fish, and this really memorable taste of vinegar. It was a good choice to leave the bad! What’s better than sleep? Good food!

I would wish for this good moment to be happy for a little while longer but few guards came in. I don’t have any grudge against them but I came here in hope of avoiding them… At least they sat somewhere in the back.
[ Guard 1 ]
“I’m telling you! I’m this close to becoming a Riglid!”
[ Guard 2 ]
“You’re not even a soldier…”
[ Guard 3 ]
“Well, he doesn’t need to. All he needs is talent.”
[ Guard 1 ]
“Are you telling me I don’t have one?!”
[ Guard 3 ]
“Of course not. The only thing you’re good at is throwing spears. Your swordsmanship is average and you can’t use any basic spells.”
[ Guard 1 ]
“That’ll get better when I become Riglid!”
Is this “Riglid” position really that great? They are like some kind of big shots here but I wouldn’t like to be one of them. It seems like they can’t put their mask down even when training. I saw one guy collapsing in the middle of the training but no one was concerned about him. Only when they finished they took care of him. I couldn’t resist anymore. I approached the guards.
[ Eric ]
“Are those Riglids really that amazing?”
[ Guard 1 ]
“Of course! Definitely the strongest on this island.”
[ Eric ]
“Hmm… Not sure yet…”
[ Guard 2 ]
“They can throw a spear from more than twenty bodies away.”
Did he say bodies? Not meters? Do they not know any normal measurements like meters or feet?
[ Eric ]
“Probably could do the same.” I’m not that sure of my words but I’m going to annoy them the same way they did to me.
[ Guard 1 ]

“...And! And! They can use amazing spells!”
[ Eric ]
“I don’t think their spells would be better than mine.”
[ Guard 1 ]
“They are really strong!”
[ Eric ]
“I don’t know… It seemed like they were scared of me when I met them.”
[ Guard 1 ]
“Don’t lie!”
[ Eric ]
“Want to see?”
Guards hesitated a bit but then they went with me to the barracks. We arrived there in the middle of Riglids training. Guards weren’t sure if they could be here so they stood behind the gate. I’ll just show them how they will react.
[ Eric ]
“I’ve seen that they don’t stop their training almost no matter what. Is that right?”
[ Guard 3 ]
“Yes… They only stop if there is an attack on the city or something similar.”
[ Eric ]
“Then just watch. I’ll make them stop their training without much effort.” I walked past the guards through the gate. I just stood there and no one even looked at me. “And now…” with my amazing blessing, False Fear, I made every Riglid look at me and point their spears toward me. They did it instinctively. The only praise I can give them is that they got ready to fight and not to run. Everyone stopped their training except for the captain.
[ Riglid's Captain ]
“Ignore him! He is not any danger to us.”
With a moment of hesitation, they all laid their spears and they went back to training. Guards couldn’t believe what they had just seen. Praised by the whole clan, Riglids felt danger from a random guy from the restaurant.
[ Eric ]
“Told you. They’re not so great.”
I didn’t stop bragging about my power and how I broke their expectation of Riglids. I thought that they were silent because I was so great and all but then something covered me from the sun. When I looked back there was a tall Riglid. Maybe 10 centimeters taller than me. He had a golden cape so he was the captain.
[ Riglid's Captain ]
“I presume you came here to train with us…”
[ Eric ]
“Well… Umm…”
Before I could say anything the guy pushed me to the front row and shouted “Seventy push up! eighty crunches! And two laps around the training ground! Last to finish will repeat the training alone! Ready? START!”

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
