"Come! I'll kill you dead, filthy human!"
Unlike what Evelyn had expected, however, the man didn't fall for her provocations. Instead, he merely stood on his spot while watching her every movement cautiously.
'Fine then, let's have it your way!' Thought Evelyn as she similarly watched the man.
However, the more she looked at the man's face, the more uneasy she got.
'What? Is he preparing an attack?'
But she confirmed that it wasn't the case due to the minimal movement of the Mana in the air. As she was figuring out the cause of her unease, the man suddenly moved toward her at high speed.
'No weapons? So you want to fight me with fists, huh? Big mistake!'
After all, a mere human's fist could not pierce through her hands, which were covered with layers of rocks and splinters. As such, she raised her left hand up and met the man's fist.
A shockwave shook the whole room as their fists made contact. Although the force behind the man's attack was immense, he failed to do anything to Evelyn, just like she had expected. As Evelyn was about to use her other fist to just finish the fight, however—
"AHHHHHH!"
—Evelyn let out a painful scream as she felt her knuckles being torn apart by something. Raising her leg up and enduring through the immense pain, she kicked the man's abdomen, widening their distance again. She then hurriedly dispersed the debris covering her right fist and watched in horror as she saw 3 deep gashes in the spaces between her knuckles. Taking out a Recovery potion from her Space pouch and shoddily smearing it on her wounds, she glared at the man.
"How?! How can a mere human wound me?"

But the man didn't answer and continued to stay in silence as he watched Evelyn's fist slowly stop bleeding. Almost as if—
'He's toying with me!'
—He was looking down on her.
Evelyn gnashed her teeth in anger. A human dared to underestimate her? She'd make him pay dearly! Not waiting for her wound to fully heal, Evelyn dashed toward the man with her fist raised. The air split as she delivered a strong jab at his face.
However, he merely tilted his head to the side to dodge her attack. Grabbing her arm that had just failed to hit him with his left hand, and her thigh with his right, the man threw Evelyn to behind him, sending her crashing through the wall.
Evelyn, who had basically demolished the whole wall with her body, was stunned. Both from the impact and the suddenly light that blinded her vision. As soon as she adjusted her eyes to the light, she saw the man slowly walking out from the broken wall. His steps were calm as still water, his eyes held unprecedented disdain for her.
Evelyn stood up while dusting the debris and dust off her clothes. With the man's face now illuminated in the light of the hallway she was in, something clicked in her head.
"Y-You..." she said with a trembling voice. "...You're Jason, aren't you?"
The man, Jason, halted his steps as soon as he heard his name being mentioned. For the first time, an expression other than calmness or disdain appeared on his face; it was surprise.
"Do you know me?"
"OF COURSE I FUCKING DO!" Evelyn screamed in anger; her eyes were bloodshot. Never, even in her death, would she forget about this despicable man. "YOU RAPED AND KILLED MY MOTHER! BASTARD!"

In response though, Jason merely picked his ears and tilted his head to the side. "You're too loud."
"APOLOGIZE NOW AND I MIGHT MAKE YOUR DEATH QUICK!"
Removing his finger from his ear and blowing the earwax off it, Jason sighed. "Look, I shouldn't humor the intruders that dared to disrupt our business but... did you really expect me to remember you?"
"Wh-What?" Evelyn's expression was now a mixture of bafflement and rage.
Jason shrugged.
"I mean what I said. "Raping and killing" your mother, who is probably a Beastkin? Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?"
Evelyn's face contorted back into anger. This vile, detestable man not only killed her mother after defiling her, he also did it to many other women! Unable to take in her rage anymore, she... laughed while covering her face with one of her hands.
"Hahaha..."
"Huh... did she hit her head too hard when she crashed through the wall?"
"HEHAHAHAHAHA!" She ignored Jason's words and let out an even more crazed laughter. Removing her hand from her face to reveal the unmistakable expression of pure rage, she spoke with a hoarse voice, "I'll have to thank Theodore for this one. Who would've known that I could get my revenge this early?"
Evelyn got into a fighting stance and clenched her fists tight. The flesh between her knuckles was soon torn part, not by the bladed weapon that the man might've been carrying, but by sharp claws that protruded out from under her skin.[modern_footnote]Catverine![/modern_footnote]Adrenaline was pumping fast through her veins, so the claws tearing her flesh apart felt nothing more than an ant's bite.
Evelyn dashed toward the man, her claws tore through the air as she aimed for his face. At this distance, he couldn’t dodge her attack, and she knew it.
“Useless!” shouted Evelyn as she saw the man bringing his man up to block.
She was absolutely confident. After all, her claws were those that tore through even Mithril! However much he reinforced his skin with Mana, it didn’t matter. As her claws were just inches away from his hands, however—
“H-Huh?”
—a metallic sound rang out. Evelyn watched in astonishment and shock that her claws were intercepted by another set of claws that was protruding out of the man’s hands. Grinding her claws against his so hard that sparks flew out, Evelyn fell into panic.
“H-How?! How can a human do th-that!!?”
“I’m flattered,” replied the man as he leisurely matched the force behind his claws to Evelyn’s, “that you think of me as a human. Unfortunately though, I was born a filthy Wolf beastkin.”
“LIES!” Evelyn screamed. If the one who made her life hell wasn’t a human, then what had she been doing until now?
“Unfortunately, that’s the t—”
“FUCK YOU!”
To shut the disgusting human that tried to shake up her mentality, she put even more strength in her strike, so much so that her claws started to crack.. Realizing this, she kicked the man away to widen their distance. Pointing a finger at the man, she spoke with an eerily cold voice.
“Looks like I can’t torture you to death after all. I’ll just kill you as fast as possible.”
Agglomerating Mana inside her brain, Evelyn muttered,

Please read the content warnings (there may be spoilers within though) if you have triggers. Also there is a slight mention of LGBTQ+, so please don't read this short story if even a short mention bothers you. ======================= My first short story (It's short - 5 chapters, 10,000 word-ish kinda short! And also completed *self pats* that I will be releasing in mini chapters (of 500-800 words each) on Fridays and Saturdays.). Happy to hear actionable and constructive criticisms on how I can improve, but please don't be too harsh okay? :) I know it's not perfect. But hey, we all have to start somewhere.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
