《PRINCESS ➳ harry potter , draco malfoy (OLD VERSION)》78 || Flight to Freedom

I added a song to each story part to sort of set the mood for each school year. The songs can be found in the chapters titled: FIRST YEAR, SECOND YEAR, THIRD YEAR, FOURTH YEAR, FIFTH YEAR — and there will be ones for SIXTH YEAR and SEVENTH YEAR when I get on to writing Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows. If anyone wants to have a look at the songs they're posted in each of the chapters I just listed.

"How many years do you reckon I'd get in Azkaban for preforming the Killing Curse on a Ministry Official?" Katie said angrily as she and Draco left Defence Against the Dark Arts.

"I don't know," Draco answered, "but it's not something I'd recommend doing."

They were halfway down the corridor when they heard a distant bang that sounded unmistakably like an explosion, followed by reverberating screams and yells above them. Instantly, Katie made to run towards the source of the noise, but Draco grabbed her wrist and held her back.

"Absolutely not," he said firmly as she tried to wretch herself free of his grasp. "You're not running straight into prolonged danger."

But with one great tug, Katie pulled her wrist free and took off at a sprint.

"You're terribly reckless, you know!" Draco shouted after her as he ran to keep up. "Sometimes I wonder why you're not a Gryffindor!"

"I couldn't be a Gryffindor!" Katie called back joyously. "I'm too much of a bitch!"

Katie tore up the staircases to the next floor, her wand gripped tightly in her hand in case, as Draco said, she was running straight into prolonged danger, but she was almost positive that a certain pair of twins were just causing their usual mischief. They seemed to be doing everything in their power to make Umbridge's time as Headmistress a nightmare for her, and so far, they had succeeded, having set hundreds of bewitched fireworks off throughout the school before Easter. Umbridge, of course, had no proof that it was them, so they couldn't be punished.

As Katie ran up the stairs to the fourth floor, she found, to her greatest perplexity that streams of dirty water were trickling down the stone steps.

"Did someone blow the toilets up?" Draco asked from behind her, clearly disgusted by the fact that they were stepping through the blackened water.

Katie rounded into the fourth floor corridor and let out a yelp of shock. She had stepped right into a deep puddle of murky water that almost reached her knees. Looking up, she saw that the entire fourth floor corriodor had been transformed into a pungent swamp.

"No they didn't..." Katie whispered in disbelief, followed by a string of proud laughter.

There was distant yelling from a few floors below. Katie stepped out of the swamp water and tore back down the stairs, almost slipping a few times thanks to the wetness .

"Stop — running — everywhere!" Draco shouted breathlessly as he trailed her.

"No one made you follow me!"

"What did you want me to do? Let you walk into a fatal situation alone?"

"Oh, yes, Draco, because a frog might just have jumped out of the swamp and bit my head off." she hollered back sarcastically.

Draco laughed falsely. "Very funny."

Katie and Draco continued to descend the floors until they arrived at the top of the marble staircase, where they found what appeared to be the entire school assembled in the Great Hall. They created a large ring, and in the centre of the clearing in the middle of the ring stood Fred and George Weasley with the look of two people who had just been cornered.

Harry was also standing at the top of the marble steps. Katie shuffled over to him.

"What's going on?" she asked, but he merely shrugged unknowingly.

"So!" Umbridge said triumphantly. Katie realised that she was standing only a few steps in front of her, looking down at Fred and George. "So — you think it amusing to turn a school corridor into a swamp, do you?"

"Pretty amusing, yeah." Fred shrugged nonchalantly, looking up at her without the slightest sign of fear.

Filch elbowed his way closer to Umbridge, almost crying with happiness.

"I've got the form, Headmistress," he announced, waving around a piece of parchment. "The Approval for Whipping form, and I've got the whips waiting... oh, let me do it now..."

"Very good, Argus," Umbridge smiled evilly. "You two," she went on, gazing down at Fred and George, "are about to learn what happens to wrongdoers at my school."

"You know what?" Fred said. "I don't think we are," Fred turned to his twin. "George, I think we've outgrown full-time education."

"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself." George responded lightly.

"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" Fred asked.

"Definitely." George nodded.

And before Umbridge could stop them, they raised their wands and said together, "Accio brooms!"

There was a loud crash somewhere in the distance. Fred and George's broomsticks, the ones that Umbridge had confiscated, hurtled down the marble staircase and stopped sharply in front of the twins.

"We won't be seeing you." Fred told Umbridge, swinging his leg over his broom.

"Yeah, don't bother to keep in touch." George added, also mounting his broom.

Fred looked around at the assembled, silent crowd.

"If anyone fancies buying a Portable Swamp, as demonstrated upstairs, come to number ninety three, Diagon Alley — Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. Our new premises!"

"Special discounts to any Hogwarts students who swears they're going to use our products to get rid of this old bat." George said, pointing at Professor Umbridge.

"STOP THEM!" Umbridge shrieked, but it was too late. Fred and George kicked off from the ground, shooting fifteen feet into the air, reaching into their pockets for handfuls of what could only be fireworks. Fred looked across the Hall at Peeves the Poltergeist, who was bobbing on his level above the crowd.

"Give her hell from us, Peeves."

And Peeves, who Katie had never seen take an order from a student before, swept his belled hat from his head and sprang to a salute, there was a great bang and flash of fireworks, and Fred and George wheeled about to tumultuous applause from the students below and sped out of the open doors into the glorious sunset.

***

The story of Fred and George's flight to freedom was the only thing that anyone talked about over the next few days, and Katie was sure it would soon become a Hogwarts legend that would be told to each generation.

On Saturday evening, Katie strolled through the grounds down to Hagrid's hut. Harry, Ron and Hermione had been to visit him the weekend before and told Katie that he had asked to see her. As she drew nearer to the cabin, she was not surprised to see smoke billowing from the chimney. She approached the door and knocked thrice, making Fang bark wildly inside. There was a sound of heavy footsteps and the door swung open.

Katie let out a very loud shriek of horror, she couldn't help herself. Hagrid was barely recognisable. The parts of his face that weren't already obscured by his thick beard and mane of tangled hair was brutally mutilated. His right eye was heavily bruised and so inflamed that his eyelid shrouded his beetle black eyeball. His entire face was swollen and covered in purple and yellow bruises. There were at least seven cuts on his cheeks and forehead, some of which were still gently oozing blood.

"Hagrid!" Katie cried. "What happened to you?"

"Nothin', nothin," Hagrid replied gruffly. "C'mon in, want a cup o' tea?"

"Er — yeah, please, Hagrid, are you all right?" Katie asked worriedly, sitting down.

"Fine, fine, don' worry abou' it. Sugar?" Hagrid brushed her off as he removed a steaming teapot from the fire and began pouring two bucket-sized mugs of tea.

"No, thank you."

Fang the boarhound leapt excitedly from his bed, leaned his enormous paws on Katie's shoulders, licked her face, then rested his head on her lap while she pat his head lethargically.

"That was quite the show Fred an' George put on, wasn' it?" Hagrid chuckled, setting a hot cup of tea on the table in front of Katie and sitting down across from her.

"What? Oh, yeah, it was excellent." she said. She had been so distracted by the injuries that Hagrid had sustained that it took a moment for his statement to register.

"So," Hagrid began after taking a great gulp of his tea. "How've yeh been?"

"Good." Katie said casually, bringing her large and heavy cup of tea to her lips.

"Yeah?" Hagrid arched one bushy eyebrow. "Not mopin' around over Harry, are yeh?"

Katie blinked at Hagrid. She couldn't believe that people were still on that topic — it was April, after all. But, she supposed, she hadn't actually been to visit Hagrid since her fight with Harry in the Gryffindor common room all the way back in November, so his questioning could be justified.

"Oh, no, we're way passed that now." Katie told him without meeting his eyes.

Hagrid frowned deeply. "Shame, really, yeh made quite a good couple. Still friends though, righ'?"

Katie opened her mouth to respond with a simple "Yes," but hesitated. Could she and Harry still be classified as friends?

"Suppose so?" she shrugged nonchalantly, pretending that the question had not sparked a sudden sadness inside her. Hagrid seemed to sense that this particular topic of discussion wasn't very appealing to Katie, so he swiftly changed the subject.

"Had yer Careers Meeting yet?" he asked.

"Yeah, I had it on Monday."

"And?"

Katie let out a cynical snort. "The idiot wants me to be an Alchemist! An Alchemist, Hagrid!"

"Well, I hear yeh are good at Potions, an' Alchemy is linked with that." Hagrid justified.

Katie took a deep swig of her tea before responding.

"I s'pose, he didn't have to go insulting my Quidditch skills, though." she grumbled, still feeling rather sour about Snape's rude comments five days later.

Hagrid let out a very dramatic gasp. "He did not!" Katie nodded. "Well, yeh'll show him next week when yer team beats Hufflepuff, won't yeh? Insulting yer Quidditch skills... the nerve..." he added in a disgusted rumble.

As though someone had just injected a shot of anxiety into her veins, Katie suddenly forgot all about Hagrid's mysterious injuries and Fred and George's great escape as her brain became clouded by the thought of the impending Quidditch match. She had not once took time to ponder the fact that it was only a week away. There was no way her team were ready to play, but if they lost, Gryffindor would win the Quidditch Cup again...

"Yeh all righ', Katie? Yeh've gone a bit pale." Hagrid asked apprehensively.

"Yeah, yeah... just thinking about the game." Katie answered in as calm of a voice she could muster. She was feeling very faint now.

"Here," Hagrid said gently, pushing a bowl of sugar across the table. "Put some sugar in that tea. It might put some colour back in yer face."

Miraculously, the sugar cube that Katie put in her tea did make her feeling of dizziness go away. She remained at Hagrid's for at least an hour and had a further two cups of tea. She felt rather jumpy now — perhaps she shouldn't have consumed so much caffeine in such a short amount of time.

"Blimey!" Hagrid boomed suddenly, making Katie jump. "Look at the time! You best be gettin' back to the castle or Umbridge'll have yer head. Mind you, I was hoping to show yeh something..." Hagrid stared off thoughtfully for a moment before he hastily pulled out a piece of parchment and scribbled messily on it. He then handed the parchment to Katie. "Give that to Harry an' Ron. They'll know what it means. Go on, now, before someone sees yeh."

Hagrid ushered Katie out of the cabin and she speedily walked back up the lawns. The sun was setting now, sending streaks of dusty golden light shining across the fresh grass. Katie read the messily written note as she walked. It said:

ꪗꪮꪊ ᥴꪖꪀ 𝓽ꫀꪶꪶ ꫝꫀ𝘳

- ꫝꪖᧁ𝘳𝓲ᦔ

Tell her what? But, Katie supposed, she would find out exactly what when she gave the note to Harry and Ron the next day.

***

Katie had expected to find Hermione in the library on Sunday — she could take her to the Gryffindor common room so she could ask Harry and Ron about Hagrid's note — however, Katie was very surprised to find Harry and Ron sitting in the library with Hermione. They were bent over their books, their foreheads creased in concentration, speedily finishing their homework as though they were on a very short timer. Hermione, however, looked completely calm, almost happy, and was leisurely completing her homework at ease. She was the only one to look up at the sound of approaching footsteps and she smiled.

"Hi, Katie." she said, pulling up a chair. At this, Harry and Ron's eyes shot up from their parchment, they each mutterd a brief "Hello" and went back to their quick scribbling. Hermione gave them each a look of deepest disappointment then whispered to Katie, "They let all their homework pile up so now they're in a rush to finish. Idiots."

"I can hear you, you know." Ron sneered, to which Hermione replied with a cynical snarl before rounding on Katie.

"So, what's wrong?"

Katie handed the note to Hermione, who read it in a matter of milliseconds. Harry glanced up from his parchment and offered Katie a short but warm smile.

"What is it?" he asked Hermione, who passed Hagrid's note to him. He and Ron put their heads together and read it. Once they had finished, they both looked back up, their faces expressing the same tone of confusion.

"Is he talking about Grawp?" Ron quizzed.

"What the hell is a Grawp?" Katie asked, her eyes flicking between the three Gryffindors, whose expressions were all showing deepest bewilderment.

"He must be," Hermione said. "What other secrets has he told us?"

"What's a Grawp?" Katie repeated.

Hermione glanced around warily to make sure no one was around to hear her before bending her face very close to Katie's and whispering, "Hagrid's got a giant."

Katie was so stunned by this piece of news that she felt like she had been struck on the back of the head with a brick and found herself momentarily unable to speak.

She recovered her voice after a few seconds. "Like — like, as a pet?"

"Well, yeah," Harry shrugged. "Technically, but he says he's his brother."

"Where in the name of Merlin is he managing to hide a giant? They're not exactly hard to miss, are they?" Katie said. Her airy tone of voice perfectly conveyed the raw shock that she was feeling in the moment.

"Really deep in the forest," Hermione explained, dropping her voice to a very quiet murmur. "That's where he's been getting all his injuries."

Katie let out a breath of understanding. That did explain why Hagrid's face had been so battered and bruised the day before.

"Why is he telling us?" she asked. "I mean, he's kept it a secret for so long, so why tell us now?"

It was this question that caused Harry, Ron and Hermione's faces to droop in heavy gloom. This time, it was Ron who responded to Katie's question.

"Trelawney's already been sacked, hasn't she? And Hagrid reckons, with Dumbledore gone and everything, that he'll be next. Old toad-face is Headmistress now, meaning she's able to make people leave the grounds altogether, so Hagrid wants someone to... look after Grawp while he's gone."

Utterly stupefied, all Katie could seem to do was stare unblinkingly at Ron for many seconds, then she said, very slowly, as she was still trying to understand the words as she spoke them, "He wants us to look after a giant?"

Harry, Ron and Hermione all nodded.

"But... he's a bloody giant!" Katie exclaimed. "Surely he can manage himself."

"Hagrid said he gets his own food and everything," Hermione explained. "He just wants us to keep him company."

"Potter, Granger, Weasley, stop talking so loud or I'll have to dock points from Gryffindor."

All four of them looked round. Draco had just appeared from behind a bookshelf and was smirking at the Gryffindors.

"You can't take points from prefects, Malfoy." Hermione snapped.

Draco's eyes glittered maliciously. "I know prefects can't take points from each other, but members of the Inquisitorial Squad..." he quickly trailed off upon catching sight of the piercing glare that Katie was giving him.

"You're still a member of that stupid squad?" she said hotly.

"Well, it's not like we're—"

Draco didn't get to finish his sentence.

"Seriously?" Katie shouted. "After Umbridge did this?" She pulled down the hem of her sleeve to reveal the deep scar that was still set into her hand. Draco winced when he saw it.

"Fine, fine, I'll quit." he said. Harry, Ron and Hermione exchanged astounded looks — they definitely weren't used to seeing Draco Malfoy expressing his care for another person.

"What do you want, anyway?" Katie queried. "You know, besides ruining Harry, Ron and Hermione's day."

Draco's face set in a scowl for a short moment before it faded back to a neutral expression.

"Quidditch practice, idiot," he said."You know, the one that you were supposed to be hosting ten minutes ago."

"Crap!" Katie cried, jumping to her feet. "I completely forgot."

After saying a hasty goodbye to her Gryffindor friends, Katie and Draco made a quick stop at the Slytherin common room so Katie could grab her robes, before tearing across the lawns towards the Quidditch pitch.

***

Katie felt as though her soul was about to leave her body. She paced the changing room, muttering aimlessly to herself, anxiety eating away at her from the inside. The Slytherin versus Hufflepuff game — the final of the Quidditch Cup — was starting in five minutes, and Katie was in an even worse state than she had been before her first match as captain. Her entire body was weak with nerves.

While the rest of the Slytherin team were nervous themselves, none of them were quite as worked up as Katie, and they watched her pace with worried expressions painted on their faces.

"Er — Blair," Graham said nervously. Katie abruptly stopped pacing and turned sharply to face Graham. He, and everything else in the room, was swimming in and out of focus. "The game is starting in five minutes..."

"Oh, thank you so much, Montague, that's really settled my nerves." Katie seethed ragefully. Graham's ears turned slightly pink.

Katie took a deep breath and settled herself at the top of the changing rooms, gazing out at her team, who were still rather blurry in her eyes. She felt weak and numb, as though she was on the verge of passing out, but there was nothing she could do, she had to play this game

"OK," she said slightly breathlessly. Her voice was quavering. "Guys, we have to win this thing, because if we don't, Hufflepuff — well, actually, they won't win the Cup, unless they can scrape about four hundred points, but Gryffindor will," she pointed to the doors as if the Gryffindor team were standing right behind them. "And do we want Gryffindor to win?"

"No!" the team chorused enthusiastically.
