《A Second Chance At Romance》Eighteen

Two days after Avery's birthday party I've yet to ask Lexi how she feels about Liam and me.

But today I finally decided that I'm going to ask her before she goes to Masons for the week. Then after I talked to her I'd have to discuss it with Mason. That's the part I dread the most.

It's not like I need his approval or anything but it would be mature to discuss it.

I had plenty of time to do that today because I was off and Lexi wasn't going to daycare.

Since she wasn't up yet I took the opportunity to have a big cup of coffee. Something I couldn't function without.

Downstairs while I was making my coffee I received a message I hoped was Liam but when I read the screen I was let down.

It was just Mason.

I did not expect that at all. I wondered if he told Carmen about his plan not that anything will or is going to happen.

I didn't know if it was something I wanted to do but I knew Lexi would be up for it.

I took a sip of my coffee and then went up to Lexi's room where she was just waking up.

"Morning mama."

"Good morning sunshine." I smiled with a small chuckle at the sight of her hair all over the place.

She looked like I did when I had a good night's sleep which was something I haven't had in a while.

"Did you sleep well?"

"Yep, I dreamed about Jason last night."

Who's Jason?

Never mind I remember now that he's her "boyfriend."

"Oh? And was this a good dream?"

"Duh, we got married in it!"

This mom was surprised because I didn't see that one coming at all.

"Well, honey that sure is something, but do you thank your daddy is going to be able to give you up to another boy?"

She's got her dad wrapped around her finger that he is not going to like the idea of her and Jason or any boy for that matter.

"Yeah because daddy loves me."

That he does.

Since I'm here with her I might as well ask about how she'd feel if I started dating Liam.

Getting out from under her blanket Lexi scooted closer to me and said, "what's wrong?"

"Nothing there's just something I have to ask you."

"Ooo what is it?"

"How do you honestly feel about Liam?"

Here it goes the moment I've been waiting for. Her true and honest opinion about him.

"I like him and he likes elephants just like me that right there makes me like him more."

This girl and her elephants I swear.

That response made me happy and relieved at how she felt about him, yet I don't know how she would feel if I did indeed date him.

"And if we were to date would you be upset or anything?"

"Nope, I like having him around! You like him and so do I."

Leaning over I hugged her tightly not because of what she said but how proud she's made me.

"I love you," I said placing kisses all over her face making her giggle.

"I love you too mama."

"Good now it's time to get ready we are going out to breakfast with your dad."

"Yay help me pick out something to wear!"

And I did after I sent Mason a message telling him to meet us in an hour at IHOP.

"There's my girl." Mason picked up Lexi and twirled her around as he had always done once we arrived at IHOP.

As soon as we pulled into the parking we spotted him waiting on us and when he finally noticed us he got all happy since he hadn't seen Lexi.

"Hey, daddy. I've missed you!"

"And I missed you."

With her still in his arms, he looked towards me and smiled that same smile that used to make me feel something.

"You look good Savannah."

Where'd that come from?

I looked down at my clothes and had no idea what he was looking at because I looked the same as I always did.

Blue jeans and a simple blouse were what I usually wore and not to mention I put little effort into my appearance.

"Thank you I guess."

I wanted to say 'I know' but I didn't.

His face showed a hint of disappointment but he quickly replaced it with a smile yet again before saying, "should we go in?"

"Yes please."

Once inside we were seated at a booth which was fine with me because I planned on sitting beside Lexi.

I was just about to sit next to her but she wouldn't scoot over.

"Mama, can I sit by myself today?"

If I agree that means I have to sit next to Mason....and that's something I don't want to do.

But I have no other choice.

"Sure sweetheart."

"Yay thanks, mom." She said happily while I was anything but happy.

Taking a few deep breaths and telling myself it wasn't going to be that long we'd have to sit together I finally sat down. When I did Mason took the hint to scoot over and give me some room.

Before our waiter came over I looked over the menu and thought about what I might want although it didn't take me long to decide.

"What are you getting Lex?" Mason asked closing his menu and looking at her.

"Cupcake pancakes"

Yep, that's going to make her hyper by the time she's done eating. He's going to have a field day with her.

"That sounds delicious baby."

"Daddy I'm not a baby. Why do you and mom always call me one?"

"I know you aren't a baby anymore Lexi but you will always be our baby girl no matter how old you are."

"And you'll always be my mommy and daddy no matter how old you get."

That response was so funny that Mason and I exchanged a smile and just laughed together letting our laughter fill the room."

I couldn't remember the last time he and I laughed together but I sure did miss it. Now, all we do is argue and disagree about everything but maybe today is different.

"Gosh, I love you so much Lexi" I spoke after the laughing died down.

"And I love you too."

Our waiter whose name tag read Mac approached our table a second later ready to get our order.

I let Mason and Lexi go first and then myself.

"I would like the strawberry banana pancakes with a side of bacon please."

Jotting down my order on his notepad he looked back up at us saying, "Okay I'll go get that put in for you, and if you need anything my name is Mac so don't hesitate to ask."

After he walked away we went back to small talk for ten minutes.

Mason would ask me a few things here and there but mostly he and Lexi did the talking and I wasn't going to complain.

"So strawberry and banana pancakes huh? It's just like old times."

"What can I say I love them besides I was craving them this morning."

I'd eat them all the time if I could.

"I remember when you were thirty weeks pregnant you made me come here late at night and get you some strawberry banana pancakes because you were craving them."

As much as I didn't want to take a trip down memory lane I remember that day like it was yesterday. Back then he used to do everything for me and was a different person but now I wasn't so sure he was that same guy.

It's a little upsetting to think about now that we aren't together.

"Yeah, those were the good days."

I mean really what was I supposed to say?

At some point during our conversation, his hand brushed up against my leg causing me to shift uncomfortably in my seat.

Am I thinking too much into it or did he do that on purpose?

Or maybe it's not what I think at all.

Either way I think now would be the time to bring up Liam and me.

Since Lexi's here I wouldn't have to listen to him if he started something.

He was in a good mood so what could go wrong?

"Mason there's something I need to talk to you about."

"Okay w-"

He didn't even get out what he was about to say because his phone started to ring.

"Hold on a second." He told me as he held up his index finger signaling me to wait like some dog while he retrieved his phone out of his pocket.

"It's Carmen I have to take this."

Letting him out of the seat he walked outside to talk to her leaving Lexi and me alone. About that time the waiter came back with everyone's food and we went ahead and started eating even though Mason hadn't returned yet.

I was a few bites into my pancakes when he came back inside looking a little down but when he noticed me looking he recovered his frown with a small smile.

"Sorry about that."

"It's okay daddy," Lexi said while she chewed on her food and he sat back down.

"Everything okay?" I asked him in a quiet voice.

"Yeah, everything fine." He brushed me off as he started eating.

I didn't believe him one bit but I didn't question him further I just finished eating my food.

We all were there for another thirty minutes until we were all done. Once we got outside I gathered Lexi's things and took them over to Mason. Lexi was already in the car so Mason and I were the only ones outside the car.

"What were you going to tell me earlier?"

"Just that Liam and I are officially together and I just wanted to tell you so that you weren't out of the loop."

I watched him closely waiting for a bad reaction but never got one instead he just said "Okay well that's great. Is that all?"

"Yeah, that's all."

"Alright. I'll let you know if we need you or anything."

With that, he got into his car and left without another word.

I wonder what that was about?
