《Vegas Sushi》18. Golden Carp

They got back to the hotel. Gates went looking for clothes and came back with some good stuff. A nice suit for him and a nice dress for sunny. All courtesy of the people of the eighth floor. They were always so generous; not that they knew about it.
Gates lead Sunny down to Vegas Sushi. He'd wondered if Gushi knew anything about the fish. When Gushi saw Gates he was all smiles.
"Feeling good, Mr. Gates?"
"Yes, Gushi."
Gates introduced Sunny and Gushi was happy to meet her. The fish had not escaped Gushi's sight for he knew of it. He'd often wondered if it was real or simply a story to tell a restless child to get them to fall asleep.
He saw it as Gates held up but he didn't reach for it. He was well aware of fish's gifts to the one who holds it. He also knew that there was a cost to whatever it gave. Nothing in life is free.
The fish was magical and magic had a different price all together. Like the Monkey's Paw. Magic created chaos; it created a disruption in the fabric of life.
For Sheek the fish had cost him his arm and his sanity. For Rico, the fish had made him self aware and it cost him his happiness. Gates had found enlightenment but who know what he would have to pay for it.
Gates had noticed something odd about the fish the moment he saw it and his curiosity made him disappear for a time.
He left Sunny with Gushi who always had a story to tell. He was also showing off with his sushi making skills.
"This is incredible, Gushi." said Sunny.
"I'm glad you like it, Ms Bunny."
"They have a place in Hollywood just like this called Hollywood Sushi."
"Oh my brother owns that."
Gushi placed a fortune cookie in front of her.
"Whats this, I did know Sushi bars gave fortune cookies."
"The fortune cookie was originally a Japanese invention. I am very prehistory in my customs and always give my customers a fortune cookie. Sunny unwrapped the fortune form the cookie. The paper had lottery numbers on one side and the fortune on the other. Sunny flipped the paper around and read the fortune.
"THE ONE WHO LOVES YOU WILL BETRAY YOU."
"Do you think people can change, Gushi?"
"Sure, Ms Bunny, for we are different people with everyone we meet. The right connection can bring out the best in us; the wrong one can destroy us. We must strive to find harmony."
"So how does someone find harmony?"
"But not trying to find it."
Gates came back and Gushi placed another fortune cookie on the bar for him.
"Mr. Gates ... your fortune cookie." said Gushi
"Forget it Gushi, I'm still suffering from the last one."

"Oh. Ms Bunny," said Gushi.
Sunny looked back.
"The cookie never lies."

Manny drove Gates and Sunny and Toto to the Pearl. Gates and Sunny didn't speak to each other for they were each in their own heads.
Gates had discovered something and was now wondering if he man who'd claimed to be God was nothing more than a greedy conman.
Gates had put the fish in hot water int he bathroom. He'd found some clay in its mouth. Gates stared as the ceramic crud began to dissolve from the mouth of the fish.
Then the water turned black as a smoke. He noticed the mouth seemed to open. He felt something inside the moth of the ceramic carp.
He found a clear jagged object. It was a crystal. Better yet. He tried to cut the mirror with it. and It cut the mirror like butter. It was a large diamond.
As Gates saw it, Mitsubishi was probably after the diamond.
***
When Manny pulled into the Pearl, the valet opened the door and Gates stepped out of the car.
"Why don't you wait here, I'll give it to him." said Gates.
"What are you up to?" said Sunny.
"Nothing. Who knows if he'll even keep his word."
Sunny wasn't buying it.
"Your playing games again aren't you. This is just another of your schemes. You don't care who gets hurt."
"Of course I do that's why i want you to stay here."
"No I'm going with you. You think I don't know what your up to."
"I'm trying to protect you." said Gates.
"Is that what you call it, plotting behind my back. I know you, Gates, you haven't changed a bit."
"Listen Toot's, you're crazy. This man is a killer and you think we can walk in there give him the fish and leave. Look what he did to Rico. That's what he'll do to us."
She took the fish from Gates hands and headed into the Pearl. Gates stood agape wondering what had happened.
Sunny and Gates met the two large Japanese men. They bowed and lead Gates and Sunny to see Mitsubishi. He was all smiles when he saw them.
"I see you have done the impossible." Mitsubishi went to sunny and took the fish from her. Incredible, truly incredible, I have been searching for this for so long."
"Well Big M, we're gonna be heading out now, nice meeting you and all." Gates grabbed Sunny by the arm and she pulled it away as if to say don't touch me
"I'm sorry , Mr. Gates, but my intention was to never let you two leave nor to live. For as they say, What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas."
"You told us that if we got you the fish we'd get to live." Sunny said.

"What can I say, I lied," said Mitsubishi. But after seeing the carp. There is change in plans."
"Mr. Gates I have no use for you but Miss Bunny the Carp has shown me the way."
"What are you talking about? ."
"I wish to live forever but that is impossible but a man can live through his offspring. Ms Bunny, as I see it, you are a woman created for a god not the court jester."
Both Sunny and Mitsubishi looked over at Gates.
"I make a couple of jokes and I'm a jester, come on."
"Miss Bunny I can make you rich and powerful and oh yes very famous. As famous as Marylin Monroe. You will be a shining star to the world. Isn't that what you've always wanted? All I ask is that you marry me."
Sunny thought about it. She could finally get what she wanted. What she'd come to Hollywood to do. To be a star. Mitsubishi could make it happen. He was a rich and powerful and wasn't bad looking. She thought about Gates. She realized he was going to die. She did not want to hurt him. She realized he was going to die at her bad decision. He'd been right. She should have stayed in the car. Now he was going to die. Like her father. Like Rico. She killed who ever loved her.
"One condition you have to let Gates go. He's a big boy he can keep his mouth closed."
"We have deal Ms Bunny."
The two large men came into the room and grabbed Gates and dragged him out.
Mitsubishi walked over to Sunny.
"I'm glad you can see the potential in my offer, Ms Bunny. The magic carp has shown me the light. I love you."
"You love me?"
"As no other man can love you."
As Sato kissed her neck she started to cry. She'd been all wrong about Gates. She'd made a bad decision. Now she had to live with it. She began to cry.
"you do not love me because you love another. But once he is gone, then your heart will be free to love."
They heard a splash and they saw Gates had been pushed into the large tank what the great white shark.
"Gates? What are you doing to him we had a deal." said Sunny.
"Did you think I was going to let him live, Ms Bunny." said Mitsubishi.
Gates' hands and fee were taped together. The shark had seen him and was swimming towards him.
Gates saw the large mouth open and the row of sharp teeth. Thinking quickly he fell flat on the glass and the shark swam over him.
He'd been able to sneak the diamond in to the pearl past the big guys by putting it in his mouth. When he got passed security he'd slipped into his pocket.
Gates reached into his picket pulled out the diamond. He cut the tape binding his feet then his hands.
He looked around keeping an eye on the shark and once he freed his feet he kicked upwards to the surface of the water for air.
He fell back down into the pool and the shark was right behind him and bumped his shoulder with its pectoral fin.
Gates stared eye to eye with the monster. There was death in its eyes. It was truly a kiling machine.
He pulled the diamond to his fingers tips and moved it to his mouth. He cut the tape off his hands and went up for air again. When he came down the shark was coming full speed for him again with its jaws chomping.
Gates swam to the aquariums floor. It was made of thick plexiglass. Gates knew diamond cut through regular glass but had no idea if it would do any damage against plexiglass
He jabbed the diamond into the glass and saw it scratch the surface. He saw the shark coming again and lied flat on the glass to let it pass. Perhaps the diamond was too small to cut through the glass but Gates realized all he needed was to crack it.
Mitsubishi and Sunny watched him from inside.
"Its futile, Mr. Gates, you will never break that glass."
But Gates kept chipping away. He was almost there and almost out of air and the shark had begun to hit him with its body.
Gates had dug a small hole through the glass and Mitsubishi was caught off guard when a tiny pin hole leak appeared on his side. He heard the sound of a tree cracking adn the glass burst and water began to pour through.
Gates fell into the room gasping for air as water poured over him. The other glass panels shattered from the pressure of the water.
They broke like dominoes one after another.
The room filled with water and the shark swam into the room it swam toward Sato who was holding the carp and in one bite the shark left noting but the man's waist and pair of legs.
Gates grabbed Sunny and pulled her though and they both swam up.
He pushed her out of the water then pulled himself up. She kissed him telling him shews sorry.
"We got get out of Vegas." Gates said.
"L.A.'s nice."
"Oh my god, Toto, he still down there hes under the garbage can."
Gates got up and dived back into the water. He owed Toto for saving his life with the scorpion.
Sunny stared at the pools of water and she thought Gates would surface soon but she waited a good five minutes and then she saw the water turn blood red.
She never saw Gates return with and she fell on her knees crying.
"Gates? Toto?"

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)

Magriculture
When Aurum Industries announced the first Full Immersion Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (FIVRMMORPG if you're hip) Limitless Online, most people saw it as an opportunity to live out their sword and sorcery fantasies. John, however, saw it as the opening of a new and as of yet uncrowded job market. One he was willing, and eager, to exploit. Determined to make money through virtual hard work and effort, John sets his sights not on the heights of magic or the perfection of the sword, but instead upon the tilling of the soil and the sowing of seeds as he explores the wide and wonderful world of magical agriculture all from the comfort of his own bed. Disclaimer: This is, at best, a very rough draft. I have already had to do one major rewrite and several minor rewrites of entire sections of the story, and it is a virtual certainty I will have to do re-writes again. Such changes may be as small as editing a few numbers (such as going back and changing how much mana an object holds) or it may force me to re-write entire chapters (this has happened once already, and I'm really hoping it doesn't happen again, but... life). Minor re-writes will probably never be posted here. Major rewrites probably will.Anyway, what this boils down to is: If you're looking for a fully cohesive story with few to no errors and publisher level editing, this is not the story for you. If your looking for a cohesive plot that's more than "Man farms, man farms, man farms well, man maybe makes money" you're probably also in the wrong place, but I will attempt to entertain you anyway.

Age of Regression
[Author's Thoughts] Dropped, obviously. Still, it's my first attempt at a novel and I do love what I did with it. Big step towards learning. Far in the past, there was a civilization much more advanced than the one of modern times. Evidence of that time remains, but it is all but shrouded in mystery as there remains no way to decipher it. Currently, normal individuals wage war with guns and smaller machinery, but those who can wield a higher power vary in their abilities. Scales, born upon humans, are a mystery in their origins but are the source of their abilities and their way towards advancement. Although normally powerless, humans have adapted to the scales and thus can connect with the power of the universe, much like the other races that inhabit its various corners. In one of these corners, there exists a human settlement where Lancing follows his father's footsteps to begin his own ascent to power. However, he finds he is far different from his gifted father, whose scales below his eyes were among the purest ever seen, reaching gem-like quality. Far from perfect, Lancing shows no desire to give up and ceaselessly moves forward to reach the peak of the universe. However, he begins to notice that the mysteries of the universe slowly begin to unravel in front of his eyes. To reach the heavens, Lancing must carve his own path.
