《The Software Detective》2.13 Your Stories Don't Add Up

We all gathered upstairs in the master bedroom bathroom. On the floor there was a pregnancy test, next to it was a yellow marker with the number 7 on it. The test showed it was positive.

"Is this your test Aniyah?" I asked.

"Yes, I am pregnant," Aniyah said. She looked over to Derenik that wore a face of absolute shock. "I was going to tell Ronald about it but I then the girls' trip came up and I didn't have time to."

"I'm sure he would have been proud to know he was going to be a father." Derenik said, clearing his throat. "He was a great neighbor, so I'm sure he would have made an amazing father."

Another technician walked into the room; her hair was a ponytail that went through the back of her cap. "Hi there, um we have something we need to show you detectives." she said and then waved her hand for all of us to follow her.

Back in the living room with Ronald, the technician walked over to the couch that was pulled up just enough so you could see it. "We found this cufflink underneath the couch." the technician said. She then pointed to the piece of jewelry on the floor.

The Cufflink was round on the flat face. There was a "D & A" in the heart.

"'D & A', how strange. What could it stand for?" Kalina said, looking at Aniyah and Derenik. They were staring at the ground and Derenik was getting hot.

"Oh, so could 'D & A' be 'Derenik and Aniyah'?" I said.

"Thats all just speculation. It's so hot in here. I am going to get a drink." Derenik said as he walked over to the kitchen and grabbed a whiskey class from the cabinet and then walked over to the fridge and opened the left side of the French door fridge and grabbed a bottle of whiskey. Derenik poured himself a glass and then drank all the liquid in it. He tapped the glass on the table with a sigh of relief.

"How strange someone who has never been here knows exactly where the glasses are and where they keep the whiskey." Kalina said. Derenik's eyes grew wide. "You don't make much of a good liar, Derenik. Your first mistake was getting Aniyah's wallet from the table in the foyer. No one would tell someone they weren't close to where their wallet was."

Derenik was frozen in place "Derenik, I just want to inform you that lying to law enforcement, especially at the scene of a murder, does not look good." I said. I put my hands in my pocket. "It's better you just come clean and tell us everything you know."

"Okay, I will tell you the truth. I have been here. The Bach's invite me over regularly." Derenik said, staring at his glass. "I just, you know, didn't want to be involved with the murder investigation, so I figured I would just say I haven't been over here."

"That's not completely true, however that doesn't explain how you have been acting with Aniyah. You two seem to be rather close with each other. There is definitely more to the story you are not telling us." I said.

"I... mean...uh" Derenik stuttered.

"Detectives, you're going to want to hear this." Everyone on turned to the technician sitting near the body with a tablet. "This knife has 3 fingerprints on it, Ronald's, Aniyah's and Derenik's."

The room went silent. Derenik fell to his knees with sweat running down his face. Aniyah's eyes were wide, and she had a hand over her mouth. Kalina was smirking, and I was pissed because it looked like I lost the bet.

"Well, Derenik, do you want to explain why your prints are on the knife of our victim?" Kalina said.

"I didn't do it! I swear! Ronald was so kind, and he was the absolute best person. I could never do that to him!" Derenik pleaded, tears streaming down his face.

"If there is anything you can tell us that will relieve suspicion of you, please speak now or we need to bring you to the station." I said.

"Stop!" Aniyah screamed. Everyone turned to look at her. "We haven't been telling you the entire story. I will tell you everything..."
