《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 89: Venue and puzzle pieces

We arrive at the location and it's breathtaking.

It's a chalet with a beautiful way leading to it, flowers blossoming on both sides of the way.

The ceremony is supposed to be outside in the backyard, depending on if the weather plays along but so far it looks pretty promising.

We get out of the car and I flatten my dress a little and feel Scarlett looking at me. I tilt my head a little in question.

"You look so beautiful." She breathes out and I smile and feel happiness rising inside me.

"Thank you, so do you." I say and gesture to her dress. She smiles softly and takes my hand, kissing the back of it. Rose gets out of the car as well and looks around.

"Woah, it's really pretty." She says, admiring the chalet and the flowers. I lean down to tug a little on her dress, that's ridden up a bit due to the car ride.

"Is Aunty Lizzie already here?" Rose asks and takes my hand when we walk towards the entrance.

"She is. She's probably getting ready right now. I am supposed to help her, so I would leave you two alone?" Scar looks at me in question. I nod.

"Of course, go help Lizzie and try to calm her a little down, I bet she's pretty nervous." I say and Scarlett smiles thankfully at me before pecking my lips and giving Rose a kiss on the cheek.

"I will be checking in on you when I can. Oh, and babe, I will text you when Rose needs to be indoors before the ceremony starts." She informs me and I give her a thumbs up.

"Don't worry about us, we are doing fine." I say and shoo her towards the entrance. She laughs a little but goes inside and I turn to Rose.

"We still have some time before it all starts. Is there anything you want to do?" I ask and she thinks about it.

"Can we look at the backyard? I heard Mommy saying that it's supposed to be the place where the magic happens." She asks with big eyes and excitement laces her voice. I chuckle a little.

"Of course." I agree and lead her around the house to the backyard.

It looks truly magical with the arch on the lawn, a cherry blossom tree above with hundreds of pink blossoms.

A flower tendril is braided into the material of the arch.

White chairs are facing the arch and around there are some decorations like fairy lights, banderols and even more flowers.

Lizzie and Robbie really did an amazing job planning this and taking care of decorations and location.

When I look at the arch, I see myself standing there, waiting for Scarlett to walk down the aisle, for a second. The thought makes my heart beat faster in excitement.

"It is kinda magically." Rose whispers and looks up into the cherry blossom tree.

"But what kind of magic will they do here?"

I laugh a little at her question and turn to Rose.

"Not the kind of magic you're thinking about. What your mom meant was that this is the place where Lizzie and Robbie will be married. It is a very special moment in a person's life and often described as magical." I explain and Rose looks around one more time.

"So, no real magic?" She asks and I gently brush over her hair.

"No, but it will still be very special." I answer and she looks at me in thought.

"But if it's so special, why doesn't it hold forever?" She asks and I am a little taken aback by her question, not sure what she means.

"What do you mean, it doesn't hold forever?" I ask gently and Rose looks to the chalet before looking back at me.

"Mommy and Dad married each other, why didn't it hold forever?" She asks and I breathe out, not expecting to have that kind of talk today but I understand that it makes Rose think about it and question a few things. I lead her to the chairs and we sit down.

"Well, that's because they weren't right for each other. Sometimes it happens that you think you found the right person but it turns out to be wrong later on, you know?" I try to explain and Rose scrunches up her eyebrows.

"It's like when you do a puzzle and it seems like a piece fits but after a while you notice that it doesn't." I use a different way to explain it. Rose thinks about my words.

"So, Mommy and Dad were two pieces that didn't fit together? But it seemed like they did at first?" She asks and I am a little relieved she understood what I meant.

"Yes, like that. But they still had a nice time together and they had you and that makes it even more special." I say and bop her nose. Rose smiles a little and takes my hand, playing with a bracelet I put on.

"I am happy to be here too." She says and I cup her face softly, brushing my thumb over her cheek.

"Me too, sweetie, me too." I agree and she smiles brightly at me.

"Do you think Aunty Lizzie's and Robbie's pieces fit together?" She asks and looks from the arch to the chalet. Her eyes a little thoughtful as she nibbles on her bottom lip.

"I do. I've seen them together and it is obvious that they truly love each other." I answer and Rose's smile widens a little.

"Good, because I like Robbie and Aunty Lizzie always is so happy around him. I like when she's happy." Rose says and my heart softens at her words.

How can a seven-year-old be so freaking adorable?

I'm not saying that other children aren't adorable, it's just the way Rose cares about other people and their happiness, that makes her very special and I adore that about her.

"What about you?" She asks and I look at her in question.

"What about me?" I ask and she starts to draw random shapes into my palm.

"Do yours and Mommy's pieces fit together?" She asks innocently and I feel my heart beating faster again at the thought of marrying Scarlett.

What do I answer to that question?

I mean, I truly love her and I see a future with her. It feels right to be with her and where ever we go, as long as I am with her, I feel at home and at peace.

She takes care of me and loves me unconditionally and I love her the same way. Being with her feels right and I never want to miss that feeling in my life.

I know, that a few months ago I told Jesse I'm not sure if I was ready to marry her but a lot has changed since then.

I found what made me happy and most importantly, I found myself.

I know that I can't depend on Scarlett to make me happy and the past three months proofed that I can be happy even if she isn't around.

Of course, it would break me if she broke up with me but I would be able to pick up the pieces and rebuild myself and that's what changed since I talked to Jesse.

"I sure hope so." I answer and Rose hums a little.

"But you don't know it?" She asks, almost a little sad and I take her face into my hands.

"I love your mom with all my heart and I would never do anything to intentionally hurt her. She has my full trust and I want to make her happy for as long as she lets me. That's what I know. And I also know that she loves me a lot, she tells me that and I can see it in her eyes. We may not have been together as long as Lizzie and Robbie but our love is deep and honest." I tell Rose, her face lighting up with every word until she beams at me.

I'm not sure how much of the concept of love she actually understands but my words seem to assure her that there is nothing to worry about.

"So, you do know it?" She concludes and I smile softly, kissing her forehead before wrapping one arm around her.

"From my perspective, yes. For me, she is the right piece. I can't speak for her but it feels like it fits." I tell Rose and she leans her head against my shoulder while looking up.

"So, will you marry Mommy?" Rose asks and I look down at her, brushing some hair out of her face.

"I think I will." I agree and it's the first time I said it out loud.

My heart beat picks up again and my skin starts to tingle a little.

So far, it's been only in my head but saying it out loud makes it kind of real. I don't know when it will happen and if Scarlett would be on board but I do want to marry her and love her for the rest of our lives.

Rose shuffles a little in her seat, suddenly equally as excited.

"You can do it after Aunty Lizzie then, since everything is already here." She suggests and her eyes sparkle at the thought. I chuckle a bit and kiss the top of her head.

"It's not quite as simple as that. We can't just get married today. First of all, it wouldn't be fair towards Lizzie and Robbie because this is their big day and second, I haven't talked to you mom about it and she needs to want to get married too. Getting married is a huge decision and there is a lot to think about. But first of all, it starts with proposing." I explain softly and Rose deflates a little but still seems to hold some excitement.

"By proposing you mean asking her to marry you?" Rose asks and I nod.

"But, you could do that today, right?"

"I could, yes but you see, I want it to be very special, so I'd pick a place and time that means a lot to the both of us. And I also want to have a ring to give to her. It's not necessarily needed to have a ring in that exact moment but it is a romantic gesture that I would want to do." I explain further and Rose thinks about my words, her eyes following a ladybug that's flying around.

"So, you need the right moment and place? And a ring?" She asks and looks at me. I nod.

"Exactly. And I would also like to talk to your mom before I propose to make sure she is even on board with the idea of getting married." I tell Rose and she furrows her eyebrows a little.

"Why wouldn't she?" Rose asks.

"Because marriage isn't just loving the other person. There is also some legal stuff involved that we need to talk about beforehand. Besides, maybe she does want to marry me but not right now, maybe she wants to be girlfriends for a while longer." I explain and Rose nods a little in understanding.

"Okay, being girlfriends is also good for now." She decides and I chuckle a little.

The sound of people chattering pulls my attention away and I look towards the house where I can see more guests arriving through the glass windows.

I glance at the time and am surprised how long we have been sitting here.

A person notices me and I smile when Florence steps outside and approaches us. I get up and hug her before Rose hugs her as well, grinning at Flo.

"You look great." I compliment her. She's wearing a dark blue jumpsuit with a white top underneath.

"Thank you! You look great as well." She replies and takes my hand, spinning me around. I smile at her in thanks before Rose can chip in.

"What about me? Aunty Lizzie picked out my dress." She tells Flo, who smiles at her and spins her around as well.

"You look very pretty, Rose." She tells the little girl and Rose beams up at her.

"I'm the flower girl." Rose proudly tells Flo. Flo looks at her with excitement.

"That's so cool! You'll do great!" She encourages the girl and Rose nods happily, rocking a little back and forth on her feet. When Rose frowns a little, I put a hand onto her shoulder.

"What is it, sweetheart?" I ask and she looks at me.

"Where will I sprinkle the flowers?" She asks and I sigh a little, glad it's nothing major. I point at the way we're currently standing on, that leads from the chalet to the arch.

"Just down this way. You will get a basket of flower paddles and walk down the aisle before Lizzie comes." I tell her and she turns around to look at the way I am pointing at. Her brain processes my words and she nods.

"I can do that." She says and bounces a little in excitement. I smile at her and feel my phone buzzing.

It's Scarlett, telling me I should bring Rose upstairs now, so she can get ready. I hold out my hand for Rose to take.

"Come on, sweetie. Mommy just texted that I should bring you up." I tell her and Rose's eyes get bigger and she takes my hand.

I wave shortly at Flo who waves back, before I lead Rose towards the chalet and inside.

We enter the huge room with a lot of tables and a big dance floor for later. There are already a lot of people here and I see some familiar faces but most of them I don't know at all.

Robbie notices us and smiles at me as he is talking to one of the guests. I smile back and can tell that he is excited and nervous about the ceremony that will start soon.

My grip on Rose's hand tightens a little bit but not too much to hurt her, just to be sure she doesn't get lost in the crowd. I lead her upstairs to the room that says 'bride'. I turn to her and crouch down a little.

"You know the conversation we just had? The whole marriage stuff and all?" I ask her and Rose nods.

"Please don't tell your mom about what we talked, okay? I want it to be a surprise." I tell her and Rose grins.

"I love surprises." She says and pretends to seal her lips and lock them, giving me the key. I smile and kiss her cheek.

"Thank you, little dolphin." I say and knock on the door. Inside I hear shuffling until the door opens and a woman who looks surprisingly a lot like Lizzie looks at me. I smile kindly and point to Rose.

"I was told to bring Rose up." I say and she smiles and calls for Scarlett.

She nods before stepping away and letting Scarlett talk to us. Scar looks excited as well and I can tell that her cheeks a little reddened from the excitement.

"Thank you for bringing Rose up." She thanks me and holds out a hand for Rose. Rose takes the hand and lets go of mine, giving me a little wave that I return.

"See you in a bit." Scarlett says and blows me an air kiss because she's wearing lipstick now.

I catch it and blow her one back that she takes and pretends to put it into her pocket before winking and closing the door.

I go back downstairs, looking for someone I know. It'll still be a little while until the ceremony starts.

Scarlett said she'll tell me a little earlier because she still wanted to do Rose's hair because if we're being honest, if she made Rose's hair this morning, it would already look a little destroyed, which is okay because she's a child.

But because she wanted Rose's hair to look pretty during the ceremony, she decided to make it now.

I give a little wave to Robert before I join Flo and Chris, talking to two other men that I recognize from the Marvel movies. They smile at me welcomingly.

"Hey, I'm y/n." I introduce myself. "Scarlett's girlfriend." Flo adds to make sure the two men know who I am.

"So, you're the one who's shagging-" One of them starts and the other shoots him a short glare and swats his arm, making him stop.

"Ignore Mackie. Hi, I'm Sebastian but you can call me Seb or Sebby." He introduces himself and extends his hand for me to take. I do so and shake it.

"Nice to meet you." I say with a smile and he returns it charmingly.

"I'm Anthony." The other man introduces himself with a slightly crooked smile and I smile back and nod.

"Nice to meet you too." I say and Flo offers me a water that I take.

I instantly like both men, they seem calm and fun to be around and if I had to guess from the few minutes I know them, Anthony is the goofier one of them.

I listen a little to their conversation before Seb looks at me.

"So, you're with the Black Widow?" He asks and I laugh a little.

"Yeah, I am. But you know, her undercover name is Scarlett Johansson." I joke and he laughs.

"You seem to make her really happy." He says genuinely and it makes me smile. I like that I make her happy, that's all I want.

"Thank you, I really hope so." I reply and he nods convinced.

"She couldn't stop gushing about you on set." He tells me and takes a sip from his glass. I blush a little and look into my water glass.

"Oh, don't worry, she only said nice things and that she is really happy with you." He quickly assures me and I smile a little flustered.

"So, you were on set too? I have a feeling there were a lot of people." I say and he chuckles a bit and nods.

"I was and there were." He confirms. I look at him and lightly tilt my head, trying to pinpoint his face to a character. I really need to watch more Marvel movies.

"You're the guy with the metal arm, right? Winter Soldier?" I ask a little unsure. He smiles and nods.

"Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier, yes. And that arm is vibranium." He says with a little wink and I huff out a little laugh.

"I need to catch up on some of those movies, so not all the terms are memorized yet." I laugh a little and he chuckles, waving it off.

"That's okay, don't worry. It took me a while too." He says and I relax a little.

He seems like a really chill and fun guy to be around with. I look at his face and suddenly remember that I saw him somewhere else as well.

"Wait, weren't you also in 'Once upon a time' for an episode or so? The...mad hatter?" I ask and he nods impressed.

"Not many people seem to remember that but yes, I was. I had one main episode and a few ones I guest starred in." He answers and I feel a little proud to have remembered it.

"Very nice, it's a great show." I say and he nods in agreement.

"Definitely. I would have loved to be in a few more episodes because the cast is great and so fun but it didn't fit with the character." He shrugs and I nod, that's true.

"Talking about fairytales?" Anthony joins our conversation, apparently only having heard a bit of it.

"Yeah, kinda." I answer and I can already hear Seb snickering.

"You know who I would portray?" He asks with a cheeky grin that tells me the answer isn't what I'm expecting.

"Who?" I ask and take a sip of my water before placing it on the bar table we're standing around.

"Cinderella, 'cause she broke man, she represent me." He laughs and I join in, truly not expecting that answer. Seb snickers and puts his arm around Anthony's shoulder.

"Just your average Cinderella here, nothing unusual." He chuckles and Anthony pads his chest.

"Exactly." He agrees and I laugh at their antics.

Before I can reply to that, it gets a little quieter and we can hear someone clink their glass. Robbie looks at us.

"If everyone would take a seat outside, that would be great, the ceremony is about to start." He announces and the crowd slowly moves outside.

I notice notes on each chair row, that weren't there before. They have names on them, telling everyone where to sit.

I expect to sit a little more in the back and am surprised when I see that I sit in the second row together with the rest of the Marvel cast. The chair to my left, directly at the aisle is reserved for Rose and to my right sits Flo.

Everyone settles down and the priest walks to the front, getting ready.

I feel myself get excited and when the crowd goes silent, it's a sign that it'll start now.
