《Enamoured》Original Edition: Chapter 43

Getting back my memory felt like watching an old movie that I'd watched before, the one that I knew the ending but forgot the plot. I blinked twice as the scenes from the past flashed in my mind.

"Sienna, I can't...I really can't do it," said my sister, Cassandrhea, sobbing so hard that her whole body shook in turmoil.

I watched myself (who didn't look like myself since that person wore Greek traditional clothing instead of jeans and a T-shirt) reached for Cassandrhea's hand.

"It's okay, Cassie, if you don't want to do it, you don't have to."

Cassandrhea's lips trembled. "B-but they will kill me and the gods will be angry. A lot of disasters will happen, they will curse us."

"No, they won't." My sister stared at me, confused. "I'll take your place."

The images went blurred with the mist closing in, and when they finally dispersed once more, I saw myself in the woods, surrounded by nature.

"You came!"

I heard a voice from behind and turned to see my sister holding her growing stomach as she walked toward me. "Of course." I smiled. "How can I miss the rare chance of seeing my little sister?" I closed the gap between us and enveloped her in a hug, careful not to hold her too tight and harm her baby.

"Oh, how I miss you so!" She pulled away and I kept my hands on her arms, holding her steady. "Did they find out? What does Zeus look like? Is he as old as I thought? A grumpy old man, perhaps?"

I shook my head. "I haven't met him."

A small frown formed on my sister's forehead. "What? It has been months since I went away."

"I came to the cave every full moon but he never came. Maybe he finally came to his senses and realized that polygamy is not a good foundation for a successful marriage."

My sister giggled. "You know he didn't technically marry us, right? We're just concubines or perhaps mistress is a slightly polite way to say it."

"Still," I sighed. "It's not right. What if one of his wives decided to curse us? We're not gods and without our other halves, we're not even as strong as we once were. How can we defend ourselves? Did the gods think about that?" I scoffed. "I don't think so!"

"I don't think his wives mind. Hera and Demeter have human concubines too," argued my sister. "Moreover, he doesn't have to be with us physically in order for us to get pregnant. He can simply do what Lord Hades did, magically summon a baby in our wombs without even touching us."

I rolled my eyes. "I don't think someone like Zeus would do it that way. I mean, come on, look how many creatures he'd slept with. If anything, I'd choose to be Hades' mistress and bore a Stavros! At least he shows respect to his wife, Persephone, and that's what a real couple is supposed to be like." After pausing for a second, I continued with my rants, "Hades clearly loves Persephone." I sighed. "If I have a husband, I hope he loves me like Hades loves Persephone."

"Your other half is your husband," said my sister with a chuckle.

"Said someone who got pregnant before she even found her soulmate," I teased. My sister, two years younger than me, was only fifteen but she clearly loved this man (whoever he was) dearly. If not, I doubted she would be willing to carry his child.

"There are different types of love, Sienna."

I looked up and stared at her beautiful dark-brown eyes that looked like my own. Sometimes my sister spoke beyond her years which made me think she should've been the eldest, not me.

"Maybe Zeus' loves differently than Hades. After all, not everyone loves in the same way." Her eyes looked past my face, a smile slid across her lips. "I want you to meet the love of my life, Andres."

I turned around, following her gaze until my eyes met a pair of piercing blue eyes. There was something about him that didn't seem right although I couldn't pinpoint what it was. Once he stood in front of me, I offered my hand and he shook it. "Sienna Rose. I'm Cassie's older sister. If you hurt her, I'll break your arm and ruin your pretty face." My lips turned upwards into what I hoped was a threatening smile.

The mist came again, wrapping the images before disappearing like it did last time. I was in a palace, not as big as the palace in Court but big enough to fit ten families and their pets.

"She's going to kill me." My sister started biting her nails, a behavior that she always did whenever she was nervous or scared. In this case, it was safe to say that she was both.

"She won't. She can't. She's a goddess and they're not allowed to mess with humans' lives." I put my hand on hers and put them on her lap.

"No, Sienna, she will find a way!" cried my sister in protest. "She's a goddess. She'll find loopholes!"

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a brief second. When I opened them again, I was determined to protect my little sister. Even if I'd have to put my neck on the line. "Hand me your crown." My sister looked at me, confused. "Give all the stuff Zeus' gave you. Hand them all to me." When she didn't move, I added, "I'll take your place. I'll take the blame."

Again, the mist came and went, sending me to a different time and place. This time I found myself in front of my sister's coffin with Zeus by my side. I looked twenty years older than I had before.

"This is all your fault!" I turned and threw a dagger at him. If only my stare could kill. "If you didn't get jealous over a small matter and kill her soulmate with your stupid bolt, she would still be alive right now." I didn't care if he was Zeus, in my eyes he was no less than a turd who destroyed my sister's life. "You know, I wish she'd never met you. You continuously put her life in danger. How can you say you love her if you didn't do your best to protect her? Are you a god or a dog?"

Zeus returned my stare with his piercing blues. "I was jealous because I love her."

"No." I refused to back down. "You were jealous because you finally realized that there was someone else who understood her better than you."

He didn't say anything but I could tell that I was hitting the mark from the look in his eyes. Clenching his fists, he slid his gaze to the coffin. All of a sudden, it flung open and my sister opened her eyes.

"What have you done?" I stared at the phenomena in disbelief.

"I brought her back. I defied the rules of nature and brought her back. That's how much I love her."

I could only stare as I watched my sister stand. She looked like my sister and didn't at the same time.

Zeus smiled and looked at me with pride in his eyes. "Now she can't ever die."

"What do you mean?"

"Any Hellenicus who died and was brought back will receive the gift of immortality upon their resurrection" was all he said before moving to his right and helping my sister step out of the coffin.

The mist came and I prepared myself for another memory to come but it never did. However, Zeus' last words were reiterated inside my head. I remembered my father's words while we were back in the Underworld when I'd asked how Queen Rhea became immortal: 'she gained her immortality upon her resurrection.'

Did that mean I was immortal too?

I didn't have a chance to think about it as the phone in the front pocket of my jeans rang. Shoving my hand into my pocket, I pulled it out and answered the call. It was Renata.

"Avery, you need to get back to the hospital now!"

"What is it, Renata? What's wrong?"

"Vladimir, I think—" she paused and I could hear her talking to someone although their voice was too small for me to hear, "the doctors, they said they lost him."
