《》The Dark

Drew's POV
After I lock everything into place, it gets pitch black dark in here. I can't even see my own hand. I kinda start to panic, not really liking the dark.
"Isabella!?" I say, panic taking over my voice.
"Yeah?" She says calmly. I shuffle my way over there trying to find a chair. As I do, I hold on to it for dear life and set my weight onto it. I let out a sigh. I am safe. Nothing is going to happen, everything will be fine. Just relax, I tell myself. I was wrong.
An ear-splitting howl comes from outside the shack. I almost forgot that they come out at night. The ' they' that I refer to are the Dejande. They are fur lined creatures who have multiple hands . Of course the have one on each of their four limbs that they walk on, but the fifth, the fifth hand is on its tail and can actually morph back into the tail and switch out with this clawlike hook. The hook is poisonous and if you touch it, you will die instantly. Why do you think that there are no animals here? They killed them all.
The Dejande are huge. They are a lot bigger and wider than a human and can kill you easily in a number of ways. Each more gruesome than the last.
They were coming closer, sniffing the ground trying to catch a scent so that they can follow and attack. The next thing that they do, is run into the door. They know that we are in here and they will try their very best to get in. The creature keeps running into the door, causing the whole house to shake. This must be the leader, the others are not big enough to cause the shack to vibrate. This just gets worse and worse.

I feel bad that Isabella has to go through this. I didn't even get to warn her about it. She must be terrified. I need to be strong for her. I'm surprised that she hasn't jumped yet. If she did, I didn't hear it over the noise from outside.
The pounding continues, and then the leader howls. He is calling for back up. Other howls follow, followed by running and the crunching sound of feet. When the others got to the shack, they sniffed around and howled collectively. Isabella screams and whimpers, failing to make any noise.
She doesn't know. Cut her some slack, I think.
The Dejande growl which causes her to jump. She runs over to where I am and holds onto me tightly. So tight that I can barely breath. She buries her head into my chest and listens to the sound of my heart. She starts to relax a little bit in my arms. The growls and sniffing continue. As does the crunching sound that signals that they are circling the shack. Trying to find a way in. I am so glad that it is a part of my routine to lock everything. I have done that since I was a part of the military.
After what felt like hours, the Dejande leave. Where do they go after they attack? I have no clue. Maybe they have their own chambers. Isabella was still holding on for dear life still. I haven't had any close contact with people since Jerome. I miss him a lot.
"They are gone now." I say, quietly. I don't really want her to let go of me but I know that we both have to get some sleep if we are going to do repairs tomorrow. Knowing the Dejande, they probably broke something. They always do.

"Ok." She says, still holding onto me.
"Do you want to get some rest?" I ask, getting ready to hand her a blanket. I know there is one around here somewhere.
"Won't they come back?" She questions
"No. They never stay longer for more than a few hours." I say, getting up and shuffling my feet on the floor till they hit a soft fabric in the corner. I pick it up and shuffle back over to her, where she is sitting on the chair where I was and hand it to her. She takes it and then gets into the red chair covering herself with the blanket.
I go over to where the fire burned out and lay on the ground. The ground is still warm from the fire that burned out hours before.
Before I know it, I am asleep. I dream of nothing, as usual. This time though I can hear what's going on in the real world. I hear the shuffling of feet and then feel the blanket that was once on Isabella over me. Hmmm. Nice.
I curl up in the blanket and sleep soundly for the rest of the night, not bothered about anything.
______________________________
He offered me the blanket and i took it wrapping it around me before I settle on the red chair. I hear him shuffling over to where the fireplace before he drops to the ground. His breathing is still shaky. Maybe I held onto him a little to tight.
It must be cold over by the fireplace, I think, remembering that the fire burned out hours ago.
Questions keep pouring into my brain about what had happened. What were those creatures? Why were they trying to break the door down? Why was he not freaking out about it? Is he used to it? How could he be? What did the letter mean by the horrors that he had to face? Was this the horror? Him getting attacked by these creatures?
I know now that I can't sleep. I won't be able to. I get up and unwrap the blanket from myself. I walk over to the fireplace, where I know Drew is and lay the blanket onto him. He instantly curls up into the blanket. He kinda looks cute in the moonlight. He looks peaceful.

Points of Light - An Oral History of the Collapse
Humanity endures. The phrase is not only an informal slogan of the reformed United Nations, but a rallying cry the world over. Even in the face of extermination, we struggled, we fought, and we endured. But just how close did we actually come? In our darkest hour, how many steps separated our species from oblivion? And are we even safe now? Were the mistakes made by earlier generations really so obvious? Or are they only so blatent when we look back with the advantage of hindsight? If so, what horrors might be staring us in the face even now that no one has the foresight to prevent? Drawn from thousands of interviews, as well as uncorrupted contemporary recordings and source documentation dating back to the early 2000s; Points of Light is a definative look at the last half century of upheaval, prosperity and carnage. It tells the tale of what happened, how it happened, who was responsible and most importantly, what we might be able to do to prevent it from happening again. This is a rewrite of a previously started fiction under a pen-name. Chapters will be updated every two days at 6:00 EST.
