"Did you tell her?" Chloe whispered her voice barely audible. If it wasn't for the fact that our ears were incredible sensative we wouldn't have been able to even hear her. Darting her eyes back and forth between Carter and Lynn, she waited for them to answer, her face growing sad and laced with disappointment.
"Tell who what?" I asked eagerly though I already knew she meant Jamie. What I didn't know was what the three of them were hiding. Shifting my gaze I stared hard at Carter examining his face for clues. Unbeknownst to my stare he watched Chloe, silently begging her to remain quite. His features turned quickly as his face revealed he was absolutely terrified by what Chloe knew. Turning his head in my direction our gazes finally locked, once seeing the intense look I knew my eyes held he gulped causing his adam's apple to bob.
Noticing Chloe was torn and visibly upset, Brett, being the model example of a perfect mate walked around the counter toward her. His arm darted out and began to run across her back in order to soothe her. Sighing she looked upward at him as though she was asking for permission. He nodded slowly in response. "Chloe" Lynn called out almost pleading breaking their intimate moment "you don't have to do this."
"I shouldn't have to" my sister shot back hatefully "you should have! You are her best friend!" She roared dominated causing Lynn to cower in fear from the intense tone that came from such a tiny girl.
"This is about Jamie?" George questioned being late to the game as he stepped forward his gaze fixiated on Lynn, expecting her to explain herself. Continuing her cowardly streak she clenched her mouth shut not wanting everyone to know the secret she possessed.
"It was my fault" Carter interjected boldly before Lynn had the chance to speak- not that she would have anyway.
'Most things are' my wolf chimed in slyly not in favor of giving Carter a second chance.
"Tell them" Chloe demanded as though she still held ranking over him. "Tell them or I will" she threatened crossing her arms over her chest in a stubborn way while Brett tried his very best to keep her calm.
Sighing Carter looked at me before turning his attention to Trent and finally to Jamie's parents. "Before I ever met Jamie and knew she was my mate" he began causing my wolf to let out a low feral growl which brought the attention of the room to me, but only for a second. Ignoring their gazes I watched my old Beta intently, now knowing exactly what he was going to say but wanting to hear him actually say it. "Before Heather even," he added as a jab for my interruption "I slept with another she wolf..." He trailed off looking to his right where Lynn stood. He didn't ever have to say her name for everyone to figure it out. Carter slept with Lynn.
No longer would I ever see Lynn as the girl who helped bring Jamie to me. Or the life long friend to my mate. No, only one word described her perfectly, revolting. It wasn't the fact she slept with Carter that made she think she was repulsive- that was her business. What bothered me was that she had the audacity to keep this from Jamie- that both of them did.

"You slept together?!" Trent yelled his voice echoing through the kitchen. A look of disbelief washed over his face as he stared at the man he befriended and stuck up for. "How could you keep that from my sister?" He continued to badger Carter yet this time he shoved his chest roughly.
"I'm sorry! I panicked when I saw her alright?! It's not like we fucked afterward. Besides Jamie had enough shit going on because of this freak" he tossed his arm in my direction. "I wasn't going to add to it!" He verbally fought back as Lynn pushed herself in front of Carter, feeling the need to protect him.
"I don't see why it matters" Lynn started up reaching her arm backward forcing Carter to stay behind her much like I had with Jamie previously. "Jamie left him so as I see it it's none of her business" she shot back defensively irking everyone in the small space with her nonsense. I could see Brett literally crutching Chloe to his chest as if his life depended on it. She was pissed and wanting to do to Lynn what I did to Carter.
Letting out a chuckle I caught everyone's attention. Trent no longer was trying to attack Carter instead he stared at me, wide eyed and confused. "You're something else Carter" I murmured sucking in my bottom lip as I rocked my head from side to side. "Even if I never marked Jamie your lies and deceit would have pushed her away" I told him matter of factly. "A long time ago I told her that I did her a favor by claiming her and you just proved that to be true."
Angrily Carter stormed off, yelling swears and threats as he did so. Turning to Lynn I noticed the tears that dripped from her eyes. But, I couldn't feel sorry for her. "I'm sorry, I didn't know they were mates" she whimpered to George and Mary who looked appalled by her mere presence.
"Get out" Mary ordered quitely for the first time showing sign of a back bone. Lynn let out a weak cry which only angered Mary more. "Get out!" She now yelled, her voice cracking as she did. For some unknown reason her sadness made my own heart swell. I wanted to hug her and to tell her it would be okay but I couldn't. I wanted to assure her that Jamie would be okay after finding out the truth but I knew that would be a lie.
"Nate" Chloe whispered as I dragged my eyes from Jamie's mom who was now full on weeping from Lynn's absence. Lowering my gaze down to her I knew she felt guilty. Thoughts ran through her mind at an intense speed and just looking into her watery blue eyes, it was obvious she blamed herself. "Are you okay?" She asked weakly. Pulling from Brett's loving hold she walked to me, wrapping her thin arms around my chest. "I'm sorry" she apologized letting out a quiet whimper.
Hugging her back I shut my eyes, wishing this wasn't happening. The fact that they slept together didn't affect me in the slightest but I knew it would bother Jamie. Both Lynn and Carter meant a lot to her and they betrayed her by keeping the secret, that's going to crush her. "It's not your fault Chloe" I promised taking a hold of her shoulders and pulling her back. Looking directly into her sad pools to assure her I didn't blame her, she nodded but didn't believe me. "They are at fault, not you..." I promised her. Feeling overwhelmed I excused myself. "I need some air" I sighed walking toward the front entrance. Glancing out the door frame the brand new bright red door caught my eye. I nearly laughed thinking back to that day and to pummeling Carter and in this moment wishing I had done worse.

Jogging down the patio steps I sauntered into the luscious grass that still had some of the morning dew on the stems. Looking up into the baby blue sky I let out a long exaggerated exhale as the questions shot through my brain, taking over my thoughts. Why does Carter do this? Why does he deem it necessary to break rules and lie? Why couldn't he have just told Jamie the truth when he met Lynn? Why couldn't Lynn have been honest with her best friend?
"Nate!" Chloe's high pitched scream hit my ears yanking me from my racing mind. Her voice wreaked of fear and pure terror. Spinning quickly back towards Jamie's house I expected to catch sight of her blonde hair yet instead my attention was caught elsewhere. Standing about a foot behind me was Carter. His face wrinkled up in anger as he clutched a wooden baseball bat. His hands wound tightly around the barrel causing the skin on his knuckles to turn white as he glared at me with hate.
"Are you going to hit me?" I asked him calmly cocking my head to side, being unfazed by his new found aggression and slightly impressed by the balls he had miraculously grown.
"I should" he spat readjusting his grip on the bat allowing me to see the skin on his palms were raw leading me to believe he had been holding the bat since he stormed out, waiting for me to walk out. "You deserve it" he hissed coldly twisting his hips slightly as if he was preparing to swing. "I wish that your dad would have let that rogue kill you" he low blowed hinting that he knew about my hidden past by the way he said rogue. But, he couldn't it was impossible.
Rage shot threw me after hearing his words. My wolf was barking explicit demands to rip Carter apart effectively ignoring my orders to shut up. Without realizing it my hand darted out gripping the middle of the barrel as I yanked him toward me. Smacking the bat against my own chest I looked him straight in the eye, seemingly oblivious the wooden knob that was jabbing into my pelvis. "Do it" I dared him. "Do what that rogue didn't have time to do!" I yelled spit spewing from my mouth and hitting his face as I tried to get him to admit he knew more then he was saying.
I could hear my sister's exaggerated cries from the Watson house, pleading me to just walk away. Tuning everyone else out that had heard the scuffle and came to witness another disfunctunal Paquete de Luna de Sangre altercation I focused on his wimp in front of me. "This is all your fault Nate, all of it!" He accused using the wooden object as leverage to push my body away. "If you weren't always in such a pissy mood I wouldn't have had to try to escape" he added making us sound like we were lovers and he was caught cheating.
"You can't pin this on me" I smirked as he grew even more furious. His cheeks were now stained a deep crimson red. Arching my eyebrow I persuaded him once more. "Come on Carter...hit me" I whispered softly and encouragingly.
"Why? You'll just have them stop me" he theorized nodding his head backward signaling to my new Beta and Jamie's family. Looking up at them I could see their vivid worry.
Turning my sights on Brett he gulped knowing exactly what I was about to say. "No matter what happens don't hold him back" I hollered as Brett nodded hesitantly.
"Nate, please!" Chloe sobbed as I fought every urge not to give in to her request. 'It's alright' my wolf assured hers though I knew that didn't ease her any.
Glancing back down to the weasel, I cocked my head to the side once more, taunting him. Taking a step back I rose my hands waving him on. "I'm all yours" I vowed as he lifted the bat slightly to where it was almost parallel with his shoulders. Fiddling his fingers he contemplated actually whacking me. "You'll never get another chance" I coerced him gesturing once more for him to take the swing.
Carter looked so different in this moment then he had a few months ago, he had changed. Then again, so had I. Before Jamie he would smile, he would laugh, he was happy. But now, after Jamie, he hated life. He loathed every miserable minute of his existence and he despised me for aiding in his heart break. As I stared into his eyes all signs of his carefree life disappeared. Now, before me stood a broken man. The same look that I had once possessed was now etched across his face, as if I had passed the wretched torch onto him. Peering into his tormented orbs proved to me he was just an empty shell of who he once was, my friend.
Chuckling I took another step back. "I knew you couldn't do it."
"Don't antagonize him!" Wyatt screamed jumping from the crowd, wanting to take control of the situation but fearing getting in between two hot headed wolves in the heat of rage.
Throwing my hands up in a surrendering motion I turned around and walked toward my car, thinking I had finally won. That is until an intense burning pain hit my back and spread across my spine. Instantly my body collapsed, my knees smacking against the wet grass as my ears began to ring. My shoulders folded inward causing my back to arche and for me to let out a loud unhuman groan. That bastard really did it.
"Carter!" Brett screamed trying to reel his brother in and make him realize what he was doing. At the same time Chloe hollered my name, her pitch loud and nearly deafening.
It took a second for my mind to actually register what had just happened. Another ripple of pain went through my body as the wooden instrument met my backbone for a second time. "How does it feel Nate?" Carter yelled venomously smacking the end of the barrel against my vertebra. "What's it like to feel helpless for once?! Now I'm the one doing Jamie a favor!" He shouted at the top of his lungs ignoring the frightful shrieks from everyone looking on. "I trusted you, you scoundrel!" He rambled ramming the edge of the bat into my back once more, officially snapping and losing his mind.
Disregarding Jamie's wolf and the excruciating agony over taking my body I jumped upward, hopping directly from my knees to my feet. The shock was written on his face as I spun around to face him, my entire being trembling with rage from his ambush. He crouched back slightly clutching his weapon even tighter as though he was telling me 'I will hit you again'. Unaffected by his silent threat I leaped forward grasping the barrel of his bat again. Instead of leaving it in his grasp, this time I jerked it forward, pulling it from his intense hold.
Once I was in possession of the weapon his attitude changed. He no longer felt confident. He was scared, and rightfully so. "You are such a pussy" I scolded snarling in the process. Wanting so bad to shift into my wolf form and tear him apart, I repressed the urge, trying to keep this fight as even as possible.
Lacing my fingers around the leather wraps of the baseball bat I swung it over my head, thoughts of bashing his skull flashed through my mind. Without hesitation I whirled the bat toward him at a fast pace. His eyes clenched shut tightly causing wrinkles to etched across his eyelids as he prepared for the last hit of his life. Just before I could connect with him one person came in mind, halting my actions. Jamie.
Stopping the bat an inch from his head I let out a sigh. "You are so fucking lucky" I growled, roughly smacking the bat against his chest. His eyes snapped open as his hands darted to his stomach, gripping the instrument before I had the chance to change my mind. "So lucky" I whispered before turning back around, not fearing being hit again. Now I've come to the revelation that Carter and I can never be okay. There will always be bad blood between us.
