their vehicles when they reached the CDC. Addy didn't think she'd ever seen a bigger building in her life. But as soon as she got out of the car, a putrid smell filled her nostrils, the smell of rotting flesh, the smell of death.
Shane ushered everyone to stay together and move quickly and quietly towards the huge building, and no one wanted to be out in that graveyard longer than they had to be, so they all complied.
Addy stuck with Lori and Carl as her father was busy carrying his crossbow and simultaneously keeping watch for any Walkers, so he didn't have time to make sure his daughter was safe and by his side at all times. Besides, Lori didn't mind. She actually quite liked the girl as she had always wanted another child, preferably a daughter.
Addy covered her mouth with her hand as they kept moving through the graveyard. She was gripping tightly onto one of Lori's hands while Carl was doing the same but with her other hand. Dodging body after body, they eventually made it to the shutters.
"There's nobody here." T-Dog spoke everyone's thoughts as Rick and Shane tried to pry the shutters open.
"Then why are these shutters down?"
"Walkers!" Daryl suddenly shouted. Lori pulled both Addy and Carl into herself protectively as Daryl killed an oncoming Walker with his crossbow.
"You led us into a graveyard!" Daryl shouted. If this guy wanted the whole group dead, he should just say because Daryl's getting himself and his daughter the hell out of there before any of that happens.
"He made a call." Shane defended his partner.
"It was the wrong damn call!"
"Shut up - shut up, you hear me? Shut up!" Addy felt herself grow angry as she scowled at the back of Shane's head when he pushed her father back.
"Rick, this is a dead end!"
"Where are we gonna go?" Carol cried out, scared for hers and the children's safety.
"Do you hear me? No blame."
"She's right, we can't be so close to the city after dark." Lori agreed with Carol.
"Fort Benning, Rick, still an option." Shane said as he cocked his gun.
"On what? No food, no fuel, it's a hundred miles!" Andrea snapped at Shane.
"A hundred and twenty-five, I checked the map." As much as Addy loved Glenn, he really wasn't helping.
"Forget Fort Benning, we need answers tonight! Now!" Lori told her husband, growing more agitated by the minute.
"We'll think of something!"
"Come on, let's go!"
"Let's get out of here!"

Everyone began to start running back to the cars, and Addy was thankful for not having to stand in the graveyard any loner.
"The camera, it moved!" Rick suddenly said, staring straight at the white security camera above the shutters.
"You imagined it." Dale told the man.
"It moved. It moved."
"Rick, even if it did, man it's - it's and automated device, man. It's curious, okay? It's just winding down, now come on." Shane said, pulling his partner away from the shutters, but Rick wouldn't give up.
"I know you're in there! I know you can hear me! Please, we're desperate! Please help us! We have women, children, no food, hardly any gas left. No where else to go!"
Lori stepped forward to try and pull her husband away, so Addy and Carl clung together as more walkers approached the survivors.
"If you don't let us in, you're killing us! Please!" Shane pulled Rick away and Lori ran back to the kids, grasping both their hands as tight as she could to make sure they wouldn't let go.
"You're killing us! You're killing us! You're -"
Just as everyone was about to run back to the cars, there was a load groaning sound and a bright light filled their vision, making them squint. They didn't waste a second, rushing in the building and away from the graveyard behind them.
"Cover the back!" Daryl shouted.
"Hello?," Rick called out, "Hello?"
"Close those doors!"
"Watch for Walkers!"
"Hello?"
A gun cocked from the darkness, making everyone that had a gun point theirs in the direction it came from.
"Anybody infected?" A voice shouted out to them.
"One of our group was. He didn't make it." Rick told the man.
"Why are you here? What do you want?"
"A chance."
"That's asking an awful lot these days."
"I know," Rick nodded.
"You will all submit to a blood test. That's the price of admission."
Rick nodded again, "We can do that."
The man lowered his gun, "You got stuff to bring in you do it now, once this door closes, it stays closed."
Some of the group rushed out to grab their belongings, and when they came back Daryl handed Addy her small brown backpack, nodding at her. That nod was a silent, "are you okay?", so Addy just nodded back.
"VI, seal the main entrance, kill the power up here." The man said to no one, confusing the group as to who he was taking.
"Rick Grimes." Rick nodded.
"Dr. Edwin Jenner."

"Doctors always go around packing heat like that?" Daryl asked once they were all crammed in an elevator.
"There were plenty left lying around, I familiarised myself. But you look harmless enough. Except you two, I'll have to keep my eye on you." The doctor joked as he looked at Carl and Addy who where squished together.
"Are we underground?" Carol asked when we got out of the elevator and began walking through the white halls.
"Are you claustrophobic?"
"A little."
"Try not to think about it." Jenner replied.
"VI, bring up the lights in the big room." The doctor told whoever 'VI' was as they entered the so called 'big room', which definitely lived up to it's name.
He craned his neck to look at the group of survivors,
"Welcome to zone five."
"Where is everybody? The other doctors, the staff?" Rick asked as he followed after Jenner.
"I'm it. It's just me here." Addy would be lying if she said she wasn't a little disappointed.
"What about the person you were speaking with, VI?" Lori spoke up.
"VI, say hello to our guests. Tell them welcome." The doctor called out to the unknown voice.
"Hello guests, welcome." The automated voice spoke.
"I'm all that's left. Im sorry."
......................................................
"What's the point?" Andrea asked as she had her blood drawn, "If we were infected we'd be running a fever."
"I've already broken every rule in the book letting you in here, let me just at least be thorough. All done."
"You ok?" Jenner asked as Andrea stumbled a bit after she got up,
"She hasn't eaten in days. None of us have."
The blood draw wasn't as bad as Addy thought it would be, she felt a little dizzy afterwards but after a few moments she was ok, now she was over the moon. Everyone was laughing and having a good time, eating and drinking like it was their first meal in years, which it definitely felt like it was.
"You know, in Italy, children have a little bit of wine with dinner, and in France!" Dale said as he handed Lori a glass of wine.
"Well, when Carl is in Italy or France, he can have some then." Lori said as she took a sip of the red liquid.
"What's it going to hurt? Come on." Rick chuckled.
Lori gave in and shrugged as Dale passed Carl a glass of the drink,
"Here you are, young lad."
"Eww!" Carl exclaimed as he handed the glass to him mom.
"That's my boy." She nodded as everyone laughed at the boy's reaction.
"It tastes nasty." Carl shook his head.
"What about Adelaide? Or Sophia?" Dale then asked.
The young girl smiled excitedly and turned to her father who was leaning against the wall with a bottle of booze.
"Can I, dad?"
"Whatever." Daryl mumbled, shrugging as he was too drunk to care. If he was sober, however, it would be a completely different story.
Dale passed her a glass and Addy took a sip, letting the liquid glide down her throat before deciding it was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted and immediately wanted more.
She grinned and took another sip as everyone laughed except Daryl, who grumbled and took the glass out of his daughters hands and passed it back to Dale, causing everyone to laugh even harder.
"You just stick to soda pop there, kids." Shane chuckled.
"Not you, Glenn." Daryl suddenly said.
"What?" The koren smiled in confusion.
"Keep drinking, little man, I wanna know how red your face can get."
Rick looked over to Jenner, who looked glum. He clinked his glass and stood,
"It seems to me we haven't thanked our host properly."
"He is more than just our host." T-Dog raised his glass, every one else following.
"Booya!" Daryl yelled.
"So when are you going to tell us what the hell happened here, doc?" Shane asked Jenner, dampening the mood slightly.
"All the other doctors that were supposed that were supposed to be figuring out what happened, where are they?"
"We're celebrating, Shane. No need to do this now." Rick said, and Addy found herself agreeing.
"Whoa, wait a second," Shane continued nonetheless, "This is why we're here, right? This was your move, we're supposed to, you know, find all the answers. Instead, we - we found him. Found one man, why?"
Addy could see the hesitation on the doctor's face, but he began to talk nonetheless.
"Well, when things got bad, a lot of people just left. Went off to be with their families. And when things got worse - when the military cordon got overrun, the rest bolted."
"Every last one?" Shane was starting to get more annoying by the second.
"No. Many couldn't face walking out the door. They...opted out. There was a rash of suicides. That was a bad time." Jenner looked down at his half-eaten plate of food.
"You didn't leave," Andrea suddenly said, "Why?"
"I just kept working, hoping to do some good."
"Dude you are such a buzzkill, man."

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. For the first time, a developer partnered with a tabletop RPG maker to use their system to create a VRMMORPG, and it was one of the systems designed to be used with superhero games!
