《GOOD wife》68. Yellow Rose

As a child, I believed that Déjà vu is a hoax. A conspiracy, that has nothing to do with reality but today, in my present, I feel it's real. Like, I am in the past but with a little twist. That is, James is next to me with Twins, yawning in his arms. And Cherish is on my right…. sleeping. And, I am in the middle of them with sleeping Jamie in my arms, and I am wearing white… Just like 2 years back.

I didn't realize that 2 years back, my life-changing. I never noticed that I have countless missing memories. I filled that vacuum with Norma's lies. I believe her, trusted her with our life.

When Daniel said that I should visit a psychiatrist, I aimed to dismiss this thought. I was always believed, that I am fine, and my behaviour was due to a lack of sleep. That was the time when James stopped visiting me. Before that, he claimed he visited me every evening after his office, but I was in deep sleep. Occasionally, I was awake, mumbling nuisance… Now, we both know, Norma narrated the story of the fictional world to me while I was drunk in whatever medicine she gave.

While sitting with Jamie, I see the group of doctors coming in our direction and I see..... The woman I dislike the most—Dr Anastasia Harrington. She saw us and stopped, maybe she expected us to join her for a little chat. But none of us got up.

I turned my head to see the reaction of James, he still hasn't noticed his… Mistress. He is busy looking at Annie and Jace, like they are hypnotic...

“Your… Mistress is here.” I whispering taunted him.

My words were unheard and James took his time to look at me. And, asked, “you said something?”

With my silent treatment, I turned my face to see Dr Harrington who smiled politely and started to walk towards us.

Oh, God. I am not ready to face her.

I feel it would be better not to talk to her.

But, she didn't stop and entered the room, passing a smile to us

“Is she going into Mom's room?” James questioned.

“Yes… That's her room.” Cherish interrupted, rubbing her eyes. “Are you concerned about her?” She mocked her father. Her behaviour is the result of our failed parenthood.

“I am concerned about mom… She's scared of doctors.” Pushing the twins out of their arms with so much care, he rushed into the room and started to yell. He wants them to leave.

The survival of Mrs Carter is nothing but a miracle. Victor did his job of protecting me. He shot Mrs Carter on her chest, but Mark Rogers had already called the ambulance. Mrs Carter is in the hospital in her golden hours and survived. Victor was concerned and refused to join us as our bodyguard, but it wasn't his fault. Mrs Carter was definitely a threat. She was ready to kill me and if Victor didn't pull the trigger, I would have died. And, currently, there would have been a funeral.

“Get out….” James yelled. “Before she sees you all…”

“What is wrong with him?” Rolling her eyes, Cherish pulled her twins siblings to her. “Uncle Geo is here… Give him Jamie… He is sleeping.”

I didn't question back and turned to see George and David sprinting towards us. They were confused because James' voice didn't make any sense. Even I couldn't understand. So, as soon as both of them reached toward me, I gave Jamie to George, and race into the room… And, the first thing I encountered was the unbearable noise. Even though I covered my ears, I could not only hear the voice clearly, I could hear the pain as well.

Opening my eyes, I realized that Mrs Carter is awake, and she is scared. She has seen the doctors.

“Calm down.” I run scared, lady.

“I am not lying… They all hurt me. Dad hurts me… Down.” She is bawling. Her eyes narrate her terror. That vibe once was, wicked, is now, shattered. “Trust me… It's true.” She cried out.

“I trust you.” I managed to communicate. “I believe you.”

Hearing me, she stopped and looked at me. She was relieved. There was a calmness in her tears. She looked..... Real. Tried. Broken, beyond repair.

She held her wound and broke into tears. “Nobody believed me.” Her voice held so much pain. “Only James believed me.”

“And, I trust you too…” Rubbing her back, I offered her water. “You're every word was right.” I attempted to control my emotion. I couldn't imagine, how her childhood was. She would have screamed, but no one believed her. “I am so sorry.” I apologized on behalf of everyone who let her down. Her life could have been better, but she faced disappointment.

“Where are children?” James asked, taking a seat next to me, and passed me a yellow rose… For friendship.

“I asked Trina and Susan for help.” I pulled out a notebook, ignoring the rose. The notebook had my research for dissociative personality disorder.

Soon, we see Norma with Daniel, my father-in-law and Mark Rogers joining us. We are about to start a little meeting that we held by the psychiatrist for Mrs Carter's condition.

“Well, she is not co-operating….” Dr. Harrington speaks out.

“But I managed.” A young doctor interrupted and stood up. “She believed me when I said I am a student….because I don't look like a doctor, and also I am young.” Looking at me, he smirked. “I am Caius Solomon.”

“Tell us, you're diagnosed,” James growled.

Dr Solomon coughed with pride. “I am trying.....”

What is wrong with this new doctor?

Mark Rogers interrupt Dr. Solomon. “Speak, fast. I have to discuss something with the family.”

“I found 4 personalities in her….” As soon as, Dr. Solomon said this, I was relieved. I was right, and we can help her. “Mrs Carter..... Emma, Emmeline, and Norma.” He pulled out a paper from his pocket. “Mrs Carter is vicious. And, she's new… Emma is motherly, she knows she has two kids… Her past, her two grandchildren, And Emmeline is 14 years old, who is stuck in the past, attempting to explain about her assaults. And Norma… She's…” He sighed. “Self-centered.”

“I am not self-centred," Norma said with a low voice.

“That's how she spoke.” Dr Solomon exclaimed like he decrypted the mystery of the century.

James chuckled, folding his arms over his chest and leaning on a chair with anger.

“Leave.....” Hitting the table, Mark Rogers demanded. “All the doctor.”

I wanted to thank Mark for foreseeing the upcoming family conversation, which will be a conflict soon. I was told that Norma wanted to speak to me, but I preferred to ignore her. Her existence doesn't matter, and I am busy with my life. I still have to figure out the path of my life.

Sometimes, I want a Family with James, he is trying and sometimes, I feel I should move on, fearing that if I forgive him this time, he would take me for granted and I deserve better. I am afraid of the world. Being a single mother of 4 is not easy, but past few months, I realized I can do… I can do everything with determination.

“Norma, you are self-centric,” James yelled.

“No, I am not.” Arguing, Norma tried not to cry. Her swollen red eyes with the dark circle are the proof of her sleepless night, which doesn't bother me. I don't know why, but I don't feel anything for her now. Am I being insensitive?

“Why, Mrs Carter said, nobody believed her?” I was preparing for a confrontation with Norma. The condition of Mrs Carter clearly says she told others, but nobody believed her. What kind of sister she is? She was the victim of her father too, so how can she ignore her little sister's truth?

“Emma was young… She even told mom, but she was a habitual liar.” Norma is crying now.

“But you didn't believe her.” I taunted her.

“Because she's a habitual liar.” Norma snapped at me.

“But you didn't believe her,” I repeated, raising my voice. “Her condition is because of you. Why?”

“Because dad said, he would send me back to the orphanage.” A pause. “You have no idea how it feels to cry for a family.” Norma played victim.

“Don't even start that bullshit.” James laughed.

“Why do I feel her role in the death of James and Rebecca?” Marvin speaks and he is glaring at Norma. I think nobody trusts her.

“I found something.” Mark threw his laptop bag on the table and pulled out a diary. “A confession… By Norma Brown.”

Hearing her name, she run to Mark, but Daniel stopped her. “The real culprit is you. Not, Emma.” He hissed and forced her to seat.

“I am offering you as much money you need… Give me all the proof you got.” James was desperate and was ready to pull out the cheque.

“It's not about money anymore,” Mark replied. “I have sent you the copies, and I am highlighting a few things. I really read her diary. She is so vicious.” He sat. “She lied to her father about her pregnancy… To stop him. However, she wasn't aware that their father would target the little Emma.” He said. “She mentioned it. There are numerous dairies, belong to Norma Brown.” He sighed. “Then, when James Carter—the first, exposed their father, she planned to bring James in Emma's life permanently because Emma believed only one person… James Carter. When, James Carter, the second was born… Initially, named as Jay…” He looked at James. “James and Rebecca started to spend more time with their baby, so Norma… in her claim says that…” He opened the diary. “She created a misunderstanding so that Irina who was childless will take Jay, and James, the first, would shift back his concentration to Emma. But it backfired. Norma gossiped about how Marvin would seek comfort in the arms of another woman, as Irina is infertile. When Irina was leaving, James and Rebecca went to stop her but, Irina not only killed herself but James and Rebecca… by driving off the cliff…” Throwing the open diary to James, “it was Mrs Brown, who noticed Marvin's attention towards 18 years old, Emma, so she manipulated her to marry Marvin, making her believe that Marvin is James.”

“She was so normal for so many years.” Marvin broke into tears. “I love Emma.”

“She loves you too,” Norma said.

“Shut up…" Marvin snapped at her. “She's not even aware of her other personalities.”

“I extended my investigation…” Mark interrupted again. “She didn't kill Willa and Malcolm. She's innocent. Her only crime was to get Jamie from Mrs Carter. She hired….” Laughing, “stupid people.” He finished.

“Why did you do this, your sister?” I asked Norma.

“Initially, it was my greed. I wanted mom, but later it turned into guilt. I regretted not taking Emma's side. She stopped talking, playing. So, as soon as I got a chance to improve it, I did what was right for her. But then, I see Anna. She was so innocent, like Emma. And, when I thought, if Emma can kill Willa and Malcolm, then she could kill Anna if James started to get close to Anna. So, I had to keep them apart.” Norma looked down with shame.

Good.

Norma should be shameful.

“You mean, Emma never did anything?” Daniel asked Mark. He was surprised. He hated my mother-in-law without a second thought.

“According to my investigation, she talked a lot. All her personalities… They all talked. She's incapable of doing anything. She's stuck in her various personalities. Furthermore, she's harmless… And, she needs help.” Mark said.

“She always escaped from a mental asylum,” Norma added.

“Because she's scared of hospital, doctors, nurses… All the health care community." Marvin yelled at his sister-in-law.

“Did you help her in the woods?” James asked my question to Norma.

“No. ….”

“Your land is still open to the public,” Mark commented. “I looked into it. She was on her own. That's why when Annie offered her food, she melts down. No one showed humanity to her without reason from her childhood. Imagine, her respect for Annie.”

“She's my daughter.” James looked proud.

“I didn't mean to harm others.” Norma is red now, with shame, guilt, tears.

“Norma, I love you, but I don't support you in this.” Daniel looked at her, emotionlessly.

“You were a mother figure to me… To Jess… But not anymore.” James added, brutally.

“I should have taken her words seriously.” Marvin joined the trio.

“I should leave… It's getting more people… Family matter.” Mark run out of the room.

“It is not a family matter anymore… It's a crime.” I said.
