《GOOD wife》29. Behind the door

Walking out of the conference room, I stormed towards my cabin. I don't have time for the drama. My wife and her terms, those so-called 'this is too much' will vanish as soon as she starts getting money, every month.

“What's the update?” I met one of the employees from Rogers security firm. They stand out from the crowd. It's unwritten, but I have noticed they wear black coloured clothes, with details. Microphones on their ears are always on. They are always ready.

“Here is the file regarding Mrs Carter.” Passing me the useless file, he followed me. “I mean, your wife.” He explained, even though I didn't ask him. I am not interested in any Carter now, but those three bitches, who escaped, breaking the contract they signed with me.

“I don't need this…” I didn't stop and entered the cabin. He followed me. “I need to know about those three women, only.”

“But you paid to investigate only one…” He passed me the file labelled as Freya Waters. “She's dead.” He said.

I looked at him, and I knew the expression of surprise was obvious. He didn't take the seat and stood with an expressionless face staring at the picture of my wife and daughter.

“Who killed her?” I snarled. I don't like when people stare at my girls.

“He is dead too.” He didn't move his eyes from their pictures. “The murderer.”

“Then find out,” I yelled.

“Car accident.” He was calm and finally looked at me. He knows what I can do. Mark Rogers is a secret keeper, but I am the moneymaker. Everything is available in the market and Mark Rogers knows this and this is the reason that Mark gives them the safety… To get their loyalty… Unsold loyalty. But, money… It's dirty… And I know how to play dirty.

“I want several things to be done… Investigated… When it is done, give me the fucking bill and I will pay.” I was losing my patience. Occasionally, They simply ask for money, before any task… This frustrating.

“I will pass this message to our financial advisor.” He left the file on the table and was about to leave, but I stopped him.

“Throw the rest of the file…” I don't need garbage in my cabin.

Raising his eyebrows, he appeared amused. “These files have information related to your wife… what she did yesterday and her plans for the future?” He said.

“Throw them away.” With the final verdict, I dismissed him.

Logging into my desktop, I saw someone who had been haunting me for the past 16 years. Willa and Malcolm.

The memory of Willa, sitting in the group when I was introduced to them in my wheelchair, is still vivid. Like everybody else, she didn't pity me and behaved normal to me. Later, She introduced herself and I knew, she was special. For a while, Willa and Adrian, my best friend, dated. It was before Adrian announced his voluntary retirement from the basketball court as a player. With me, Adrian started from the start. He shifted the course and decided to be a coach. While I had no choice of playing ever. My bones were recovering, my legs were gone and my ankle…. they still hurt when I walk. To maintain myself, I still do exercise that the therapist says… Even I visit him whenever possible.

When Willa died, I lost my sanity. I had better plans for us… For Malcolm. I was going to rehab for my drinking issue and planned a promising future for Willa and Malcolm, but they died.

Turning back, I see the wall-sized photo of the woman who gave me my only daughter. At first, I saw the daughter of the man who killed Willa and Malcolm. My wife has her father's eyes. It took me years to realize that she is no longer his daughter but my wife… Only my wife. I am her identity. I even tried to be better but then… I became addicted to drugs, my painkillers. I still love the feeling after consuming it, but now, I have been working on it.

My addiction was an early call, and Anna saved me. She helped me through ups and downs. I have known her for the past 10 years. Dean was born… My boy.

The picture of my wife pointing out the tiniest flower on the ground with 2 years old Cherish. That was the first time, I was sober and looked at her… And saw Cherish for the first time. That was the moment I realized Willa and Malcolm is no more… They are gone, and my life with Willa and Malcolm is gone too. So, that evening, I rushed to the psychiatrist available. That's how I meet Anna.

I shifted my attention to the screen of the desktop and logged into the security management of my company. I could sit anywhere in the world with access to any of the buildings of my company. What caught my attention was my wife. She was still in the conference room, turning the pages of the file with lines of terror on her forehead. She is terrified of something.

I planned to talk to her about divorce, privately but then, she got up and left with the file. I followed her virtually through Cameras when I noticed her stopping in front of a private elevator. I couldn't help but smile. I had a good time with her… Inside her. She still feels like a virgin… Inexperienced. Even, I instructed her how to hold me, while I pound into her little fragile body.

She is definitely not a whore… I shouldn't have called her names. But I still enjoy her submissive behaviour. It is exciting. Her, trying to push me with her little hands… it is like an adventure.

Knock...

Knock...

Diverting my attention to the camera just outside my cabin, I saw my good for nothing assistant. I slept with her once… Just right after Willa died and now, she's sucking my sanity. I gave up on her demand three times but this time, I want to fire her… which I will. I am just looking for a professional reason.

Pressing the button to open the door, I see her entering with her notebook walking into the cabin. She looked through the pages before lifting her head and, “Mr Edwards is here.” She said.

Who is Edwards?

Dismissing her, I took off my blazer and was ready for the appointment. I took the file of Freya waters and looked into the details. I know that She was fucking pregnant when she died. Her death was the last straw for me. I turned wild. I have no justification for what I did to my wife. But I always gave her the option to leave.

“Hello….” A familiar voice entered, but I wasn't ready to give him the attention. I have business to handle….jobs to produce. Economy to control. And most importantly, a question, Who killed Freya?

“Mr Carter… Congratulations on divorce.” These words mocked me and caught my attention.

With a mocking smirk pasted on his useless face walked inside the Theo Edwards. He dares to walk into my den… Alone.

Interesting.

I can wipe his existence from the earth and no one would know. His family will search but will fail… maybe I can try this. But, instead, “My time is important. So, speak and get out.” Words flowed automatically from my mouth. And, I don't regret it.

“I understand. I simply needed you to see… You know, after 16 years… I am planning to rejoin…” He was confident, and no one is more confident than me. Maybe, he is happy about kissing my wife… MY WIFE.

“I don't remember… You here…” I couldn't recall his pathetic presence in my territory.

“I can narrate the story but considering your time, I am cutting it… Short. 16 years ago, I left because I realized later that I prepared the fake paper… And, I couldn't stand and watch people getting ruined.”

Recalling the event, I sighed with fulfilment. He did a good job. Those papers were pieces of art. “You never joined us… You were an intern for Gerard Harrington. Ask him.”

“I waited until I got my degree, and, then, I left. I do have a license. So, I am here to get a job.” He looked at my wife and my daughter.

“I don't have any job for you.” I ignored his reaction, I pulled another file to sign.

Standing up, “I know I am good at my job. I can prepare fake paper….just like your fake marriage.” He said.

I knew what he meant. “She is married to me.” He doesn't want my wife. He wants revenge, for ruining his life.

“But there is no proof… There is no marriage certificate. Simply a contract stating the terms.” Looking at me, he tried to challenge me. “You are not married to her, So what's the point of divorcing?”
