《GOOD wife》28. Pink Larkspur

“This is too much.” mumbling, I looked at James, who is busy staring at his phone. That ghost smile dancing on his handsome face angered me. Who is this person grabbing the successful attention of my husband?
“James, I told you that… This is too much for her. She can take care of herself. You don't have to offer her this property and money…. There are lots of charity cases, Mrs Carter's voice was annoying. Despite her visible love for James, she is annoyingly sweet. Her behaviour could cause diabetes.
“Stop controlling me.” Demanding, James looked at me. “Shut your little mouth and take it," James ordered me.
“I don't need it.” I was confident.
Even though I am new in this survival games, but I will be fine. My future is bright with my kids. I can leave them with James. I know, he will take care of them. He will love them. They will be his priority. I know, I have seen it. His love for Cherish is the proof. But, James is an unpredictable man. He has a drinking issue, He is an alcoholic. And, I don't want my kids to see this. Especially Jamie. I don't want my son to become the next alcoholic James Carter. I want my son to inherit the good quality of his father.
“I don't need your advice,” James growled. “That's final.” Slamming the table, James left.
I, sitting in the conference room with my mother-in-law and the lawyer, watched my soon-to-be-ex-husband storming out of the room. The only distance between us was glass. James looked at me with a mixture of emotions. He didn't try to hide his dissatisfaction, anger, but he was desperate too. He wants to talk to me …. Privately.
But, I was hesitant. My previous experience cautioned me, don't stay with James alone. He would attack at me..... maybe kill me this time. I have two kids to look for. I don't trust James when it comes to my kids. His alcoholic version would hate our kids because I contributed 50% to their birth.

“My son is stubborn.” My mother-in-law adored her son.
“But I don't need it.” Arguing, I handed the paper to a lawyer.
The lawyer was about to speak when Mrs Carter stopped him and whispered something in his ears. Whatever she said, it caused the lawyer to gulped in nervousness. His posture changed from 'relax-,it's-another-working-day' to 'is-she-real?'.
Without presenting any argument, the lawyer got up from his seat and walked slowly out of the room. He did look at me before leaving and took his time staring at me out of the room, then diverted his attention to one of the passing women who had a pink larkspur flower in her arms, which is historically thought to be symbolic of fickleness and sudden changes. Naturally, I didn't like him staring at me. I would have used the infamous statement that 'i-am-Mrs-Carter' but I cannot use it. Since we are here to settle my divorce agreement with my beloved husband.
“You look beautiful.” Mrs Carter said, suddenly.
“Thank you?” I was confused. In 16 years, I was never appreciated by these people. But suddenly, when I am ready to get away from these people, I am getting a lot of unwelcome, uncomfortable attention.
“I knew you will not accept these… So, I have something better…” She looked satisfied. And, this is not good. Last time, she was satisfied when she saw me in hospital with Cherish in my arm. At that moment, she wasn't aware that I gave them a girl. “I will offer you double of what James is offering you, in exchange for my grandson.” She ambushed me.
She knows!!!
She knows about Jamie.
“The.....the… There is no… No grandson.” I denied the existence of my son. My lifesaver. My peace. Love of my life… And I will protect him at all cost. They have taken Cherish from me but not Jamie. He knows nobody but me. I am his world.

“There is…” Taking her laptop bag, she pulled out a file. “And, he looks so much like a Carter.” She threw the file at a table in front of me. “His eyes are so much like James.”
Hurriedly, I took the file and opened it. It has everything related to Jamie. From His birth certificate to his recent vaccine details. She has every detail related to Jamie… She even knows about Zippy and Little Ryan.
“James doesn't want him.” I was convinced. If he wanted our son, then he would have made sure to snatch him from me. But nothing has been done by him to get Jamie, so I am being optimistic and assuming that he doesn't know about Jamie.
Giggling, “James doesn't know about Jamie.” Mrs Carter accepted.
Her words acted like a magical spell to me that gave me relief. James Doesn't know about Jamie. I was right. Jamie is safe.
“But he will…. Soon.” Mrs Carter added.
“What do you want?” I was about to cry. This is too much. She is a powerful woman who wants to destroy me, my happiness. I have lost interest in having a future with her alcoholic son. My future is with my kids.
“Your happiness.” Cooing me, Mrs Carter sat next to me.
“You are a selfish woman.” I would feel bitterness in my voice. Her presence is choking my composure. And, I am trying to control myself. I prefer not to attack her. I may end up killing her, which is a sin.
“I know… I am selfish… Tell me something new.” She was happy. “Now, here is the deal. Give me James Jr. And Cherish and leave.....” There is a pause. I know the worst is coming. “With your other kids.” She finished.
Other kids.
What does that mean?
“I have two kids.” I frowned.
“Wait….” Mrs Carter was amused. She looked around in excitement and then into the file. She turned pages and pages and read it. Not only that, but she laughed like a manic before passing me the file. “You don't have two kids… You have another kid.”
Taking the file, I read the file, which says my son has three siblings. I did the math and concluded it is talking about my other two pregnancies that were terminated because of abusive James.
“My previous pregnancy was terminated… James almost killed me.” I was sobbing, remembering my two kids in the NICU fighting for their lives. They lost the fight, leaving me in the dark, alone in the world to survive. I wanted to die, but I had to live to Cherish.
“It says living siblings.” Mrs Carter rolled her eyes. What kind of grandmother is she? Doesn't she feel my pain? They were her grandkids.
“Are you talking about other children… That James has with other women?” With courage, I managed to ask. My husband had children with other woman…no, it's women.
Grabbing my jaw with hostility, “I don't care if you don't know your other kid… I need my grandson. You have 24 hours… I want him at the mansion by tomorrow, or else I'll take him.” Mrs Carter Warned me.
Leaving me at the conference room, she organized her dress and walked out, with the lawyer following her. While, I sat and watched them leave. James must have left before them.
I have another child and why I am not aware of it?
Taking the file, I started to read. What does it mean?
Where is my other child?
When it was born?

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
