《A Little Good Influence | Max Thunderman x Reader》Chapter 41

Pheebs: Dinner at my house?
(Y/N): Are you sure? I don't want to intrude or anything.
Pheebs: Nonsense. My parents want to see you anyway. So do Billy, Nora and Chloe.
(Y/N): Well if Billy and Nora want to see me then I guess I could squeeze you in.
Pheebs: Great! Tonight at 8!
(Y/N): I'll be there.
"This lasagne is delicious, Mrs. Thunderman." You smiled up at her as she piled some more onto your plate.
Came the voice from your glass of water sitting beside you. You were quite thankful that no one could hear the spirit of water except for yourself.
She returned the grin, her finger gently brushing your cheek, "Eat all you want, (Y/N)."
"Thank you."
You all sat in a comfortable silence, with Phoebe gently chatting with you between talks with Max while you talked with Chloe and Nora.
When the conversation died down a bit, you were finally able to ask a question that you had been thinking of for quite a while...
You cleared your throat, "So, Mrs. Thunderman, any update on Adam?"
It was as if a gunshot was fired. The conversation died off immediately, at least from the adults and the twins. Billy, Nora and Chloe were just as clueless as you were.
A nervous laugh escaped you before your mind settled on the worst possible scenario and you could feel your heartrate pick up at the thought of Adam being far too gone.
"What is it? Is he still in critical condition?"
"Um, well," Hank began and was continued by his wife, "Adam is being taken care of."
'
Your brows furrowed and you looked to the twins only to find them with expressions as nervous as their parents, "Guys? What's going on?"
"Nothing, (Y/N), we really haven't kept tabs on Adam, he's being taken care of by the superhero council." Informed Max so nonchalantly that you almost believed him.
The glass of water on your table rippled furiously,
"You're lying."
"He's not lying, (Y/N)." Phoebe said gently, placing an arm on your shoulder but you jerked back, looking past the facade she put up to see the nervousness in her eyes.
"You're lying to me, too." You whispered, feeling hurt that your own best friend was hiding something about your adoptive brother from you. The fork in your hand slipped to your plate and you stood up, grabbing your phone off the table and hastily stuffing it into your pocket.
"Wait, (Y/N)." Max said as he and the rest of his family stood up trying to diffuse the situation, but you weren't going to be swayed by them until you got some answers.

"Tell me the truth. What are you hiding from me?" You pleaded, trying to search his eyes for an answer, but all you could see was his anxiety and hesitance.
"The truth is, (Y/N)," Barbara began and you felt the tension in your shoulders relax a bit at the sincerity in her voice,
"Adam is actually your god brother."
Your eyes widened and you sat back into your seat, holding the table for something stable, "Seriously?"
She nodded and a breath escaped you, "Wow, I just, I never even imagined, just, woah." You mumbled to yourself, running a hand through your hair in disbelief.
Phoebe settled down next to you, rubbing your arm, "We're sorry we didn't tell you earlier."
"What?" You asked, eyes vaguely settling onto your glass that got knocked over when your sat down. Luckily for you, they thought that you just didn't hear them when in fact you were asking the water around you for answers.
"I said we're sorry—" But Phoebe's words weren't reaching your ears anymore as you listened for the water.
You hesitantly meant Phoebe's eyes with a pained expression which surprised her, "You're not telling me everything, are you?"
"Wh-What? That's ridiculous, (Y/N)." She giggled trying to cover it up but you saw the moment of hesitation. The moment of shock that you knew. The moment of anxiety. You sensed her heartbeat pick up and you felt her hands become slightly sweaty against your skin.
"What aren't you telling me? And don't try to lie, my powers can detect when you're lying." You said sternly, staring down her parents who seemed smaller by the second.
"Alright, we'll be honest with you, but please don't be upset." Said Barbara, reaching over the table for your hands. You didn't take hers and instead stared at her expectantly.
She sighed, recognizing your resolute expression, "Adam was discharged from the hospital 3 weeks ago and taken into custody."
Before you could even process it, a gasp escaped you and you stared wide-eyed at her.
"In custody? For what?!"
"For kidnapping and murder."
"He didn't do either to me! I went willingly with him!" You argued, jumping from your seat and the water on the table was pushed to the floor.
Your powers were beginning to come through and the thought of another accident like Adam taking place frightened you before but now, you weren't sure how to feel about them.
"Not you, (Y/N), your mother." She replied sadly.
"They-They can't." You breathed, running a hand through your hair, feeling the wind leave your lungs.
"He has already confessed, (Y/N)."
Your heart stilled, when a wave of realization passed over you, "How could you not tell me?!"

"We didn't want you to find out in case it made you upset." Barb tried to reason but you weren't having any of it. You stormed out of the kitchen to the living room.
"So you thought you could just hide that my brother was arrested and is in prison!"
"We were just trying to do what's best for you!"
"Who are you to decide what's best for me?!"
You were livid. They couldn't just act like your parents after you spent a life without them. You were always alone, you had to raise yourself and learn to rely on yourself only. They couldn't fool themselves into thinking that they were needed now after you survived on your own for so long.
You lived alone for so long, having no one to rely on, having no parent to share your pain with you, had no one looking out for the best for you. You finally found that with Adam and now, it was being ripped away from you.
The wind outside began to pick up and you could distantly hear the soft shower of rain.
"We just did it because we care about you."
"Did you ever actually stop to think what I would have wanted? Were you never going to tell me?"
The rain got heavier and the sky got darker. Thunder echoed outside and lightnight streaked across the skies.
"We just think you're confused. Adam took you to a secluded location so he could take your powers away from you. He confessed to it all." Phoebe said, trying to reach for you but you moved back so quickly, holding your arms out to defend yourself.
You heard the rain whisper to you.
"No. It won't come to that." You whispered back, managing to conceal your voice so it wouldn't draw suspicion. When you spoke again, your voice was steely and cold, "He never did anything that I didn't let him."
Their eyes widened, "Your powers?"
You nodded, "I let him."
You answer seemed to shock them all, Phoebe cupped her hands over her mouth and she could barely even look at you, "Why?"
"I'm not going to explain myself to you. We always lived different lives. I don't expect you to make decisions on my behalf or to judge me."
The longer you were here, the less you recognized them. The family that once was a home away from home, now made you feel disdain and you only wanted to get away.
"See, this is why we didn't tell you that Adam was thrown in jail! Because ever since he showed up you've been making stupid decisions and nearly getting yourself killed!" Max shouted and his father tried to calm him with a hand to his shoulder but that didn't stop him, "How could you try and give up your powers?! That's the essence of a super!"
"Who do you think you are to judge my decisions?!"
In a way, you were kind of relieved that Max was the one who had begun to yell at you because you knew that you'd feel guilty to yell at the two people who had ever been some sort of parents to you. But you needed to get this through, you needed them to stop pretending that they care for you when all they felt was obligation.
"We're the people who are capable of making rational decisions while you're throwing yourself at kidnappers and murderers!"
"He's not a murderer!"
There was a fierce thunderclap outside that managed to get the rest of the family to flinch but you and Max were still staring each other down.
"Right, sorry, he just kills people." Came his sarcastic reply and his father tried to hold him back as his mother tried to come in between the both of you.
"Stop it." You were beginning to tremble. Tears were slowly blurring your vision.
"Someone has to tell you the cold, hard truth, okay (Y/N)? Adam never cared about you, he just wanted your powers—"
"STOP IT!!"
The lights of the house went out and the streaks of lightning painting the sky outside was the only reason you could see Max through your tears.
"You have no right to say anything like that to me," You spoke, your voice shaking.
"I have to say these things because you won't realize them yourself! And you're going to keep living in this fairytale world instead of seeing things the way they are! I have to tell you because—"
"You're not my family!" You screamed and the door slammed open with a powerful gust of wind. You turned, looking at their faces and knowing that you don't ever want to be here again, and walked towards the doorway, "I don't have a family..."
"(Y/N), wait, you can't leave in this weather." Phoebe tried to reason but you didn't look back at her.
Instead, you stared at the rain that was falling so hard, you could barely see anything. You stuck your hand out, feeling comfort from the cool drops of water that fell on your hand. It was gentle, in contrast to the harsh weather.
"Let me pass." You said and immediately the rain, the flood on the roads and the clouds above you parted. You didn't look back to see their shocked faces at your power before you walked comfortably through the path, hearing the rain crash behind you, stopping them from following you.
You'd never look back.
Ever.

Mycology
Declan was but a teenager when he was invited to Gaia. It wasn't some popular VRMMO like the ones his friend keeps recommending, nor was it a 'game' in the traditional sense. Gaia was the stopgap to Indiri, a living breathing world, the final creation of a dead genius. Invited to this world by Eve, the overseer and an AI light-years greater than any that came before her, Declan was given a choice. To join or not to join? Well, why the hell not? Hello, this is a pretty basic VR story which I started writing out of boredom, don't expect anything too great here, it's a somewhat unique setting but with mostly slice of life comedy shenanigans with no real 'plot' since I can't reliably include stakes in a world where respawning is a thing. I'll try to upload at least once every other week but real life stuff may get in the way occasionally. **WARNING** Protagonist comes with an inbuilt wizard hat. Also, any mentions of chapter titles shall be met with falling rocks TPK. **ACTUAL WARNING** Story may or may not read like the fever dream of an eclectic sasquatch with internet connection. Do be warned, that this story has extremely slow pacing by design. Join the Discord!! https://discord.gg/p2gxqs4 Laugh at my empty Patreon!!
