"And Dr. Ambres never talked about her relationship with Orlin Dwyer?" I questioned the nurse, my arms crossed, "She didn't even mention the littlest thing?"
Barry, Nora, Cecile, Joe and I were at the hospital, questioning a nurse, asking a few questions about Orlin the next day.
I was dressed in black plaid pants, a pastel orange sweatshirt that was cropped ending right at the hem of my pants, black ankle boots on my feet, my hair straight as usual, one of Barry's jacket's on me, finishing the look.
"She never really talked about anything." The nurse shook her head, "After her fiancée died, she wasn't quite the same."
"How so?" Barry questions.
"Angry. Withdrawn." She told us, "Only time she seemed happy was when she was with that girl in the coma."
I sigh deeply, "Can you think of anything that might help us find Dwyer?"
"I'm sorry, Detective." She spoke, folding her hands together.
I looked at Cecile, as she gave me a small nod.
"Okay, if you come up with anything, would you give me a call, please?" I hand her my card, the nurse nodding, as she walks away from us, Nora, Joe and Cecile coming over to Barry and I.
"Somebody's gotta know something." Barry huffs.
"Everyone we've talked to is telling the truth." Cecile refers to her abilities, "I think Ambres was the only one working with Dwyer."
"Well, look, we'll pore over the files at CCPD. Maybe we missed something." Joe nods towards us, "We'll let you know if we come up with anything, all right?"
Joe and Cecile leave us along, Barry looking at Nora, "You okay?"
"I just, uh- don't know what to do." Nora quietly said.
"Yeah, me neither." I lean my back against the wall, hitting my head against it.
"We've hit walls before, though." Barry looks at us, "We'll figure it out."
-
"Oh, nice table." Ralph says as him and I walked into the cortex, "Liking the new digs."
"Well- they're not new." I slip off my jacket, walking by Cisco, putting down it down, "This is the only backup we have since the attack- so we've got to make use of it."
"Did you guys find anything?" Cisco looks at Ralph and I.
I shook my head, "I asked around, and even got Iris to put out an article but no one has seen Dwyer or our new Cicada."
"Yeah, I talked to Earl Cox, all my contacts nothing." Ralph nods.
I looked at Cisco, "How long till the satellite can scan for dark matter?"
"How about now?" Cisco presses a button on the keyboard, watching as the computer did its thing.
"Well, if this new Cicada even has traceable dark matter." Sherloque walks over to us, holding a broom, "I mean, we've seen Cicada do things that we've not seen before, right?"
"Yeah, he can dampen powers, he can control the dagger- basically a Dwyer number two, but- it's also like-" I began.
"Like he could take control of us." Cisco finishes my sentence, "Let's hope Caitlin can figure that out at the Tannhauser site while we figure out where he is."
The computer starts beeping, Cisco looking at it instantly, "We got a Starchives asset in Kolins Woods."
"Starchives?" Sherloque repeats, "What is this?"
I explain, "Well, it's a place where we store everything Flash related, prototypes, super suits- basically everything since day one."
"Okay, and the alarm is going off because-?" Ralph trails off.
"Because somebody just stole something from us." Cisco looks up, "Something really, really, not good."
-
"You guys at the Starchives yet?" Cisco questions through the comms we all wore.
"We just got here." I told him, walking around the dark room with Ralph, shining our flashlights over everything.
"No sign of forced entry. Or overhead lighting, apparently." Ralph remarks, earning a laugh from me, "Pretty sure that's a vacuum."
"Okay, keep looking!" Cisco told us.
"Remind me again what we're looking for?" Sherloque questions.
"Uh, it's like a huge round glass bubble." Cisco explains.
"Think huge hamster ball." I comment, looking around.
"You mean like that?" Sherloque questions.
Cisco and Sherloque speak in unison, "We found it!"
"Thawne's Time Sphere?" I question, Ralph pulling the cloth off it as we stared right at it, "Are you sure?"
"What do you mean am I sure?" Cisco questions, "I'm looking right at it, why?"
"Well-" I inhale, "So are we."
"So it's here and in the Starchives at the same time?" Nora's voice fills my ears through the comms.
"Somebody stole the plans and made a duplicate?" Barry questions.
"Not exactly." Sherloque exhales.
"Guys, cue up Operation: Shazam." Cisco says, Ralph readying the tablet towards me so they could see it.
"Got it-" My eyes lighting up, as I snapped my fingers, a small flame erupting between my fingertips.
I let the flame travel up to my pointer finger, a burn mark forming on the Time Sphere as I held it there.
"One burn mark on two different Time Spheres." Nora says.
Sherloque corrects her, "Or one scratch on one Time Sphere."
"That's impossible unless-" Nora's voice went quiet.
"Unless it's the same one." Barry sighs.
"It is the same one." Cisco nods, "This is our Time Sphere."
"Which shows up here at the same time that someone who looks like Cicada kidnaps Orlin Dwyer." Sherloque spoke, "It's not a coincidence."
"So whoever kidnapped Dwyer-" Nora began.
Barry finishes, "Is the Cicada from the future."
-
It was the next day, the day starting off with a new crime scene, this one being right in CCPD.
I was dressed in a white sweater, one that was tucked into blue ripped jeans, black heeled ankle boots on my feet, my hair straight as usual, my badge and holster attached to my belt, my gun resting in the holster.
I stood by the window, crossing my arms, Nora and Barry coming over to me.
"It was him, wasn't it?" Cecile walks over to us as we looked at what had become of the room, Joe joining us, "The other Cicada."
Joe sighs, "Guy didn't know what hit him."
"You said he was after a cold case file?" Barry looks at me.
Nora questions, "Are any of them digitized?"
"No- not yet." I shook my head, "But the only way to figure out what's missing is to see what's still here."
"I mean-" Barry trails off, shooting me a look, shrugging in suggestion, "I could help with that."
I nod, standing in the center, calling out for everyone, "All right, everybody. Clear out. CSI needs this scene."
"Hey, by the way, this might not be our only lead." Barry mentions once I turned, looking at Joe, "Do you remember that Time Sphere that we built for Thawne?"
"That big hamster ball thing?" Joe questions.
"Hey- that's what I said." I high five him, then clear my throat, "But- someone stole one in the future to come here."
"For what, our-" Cecile spoke up, "Our Cicada copycat?"
"It makes sense." Joe shrugs, "I can't even believe I just said that."
Joe looks around, "Okay, son, you're on."
Barry runs around, cleaning everything up, putting everything back in its place and going through the files, "Okay, I went through everything."
"There was indeed one file missing. And it's thank you-" Barry took the notepad Joe offered, writing something down, "It is from 2017, that's it."
"All right, I'll do some digging, see why this was so important, they had to cut a hole in the wall." Joe nods, taking the notepad.
"I'll help." Cecile leaves with him.
-
"Joe traced the file that our new Cicada took." Barry explains as we walked with Cisco and Nora, "There was a meta attack here two years ago. Two people died, and the meta was never ID'd."
"So- this new Cicada might be going after this meta?" Cisco questions, chewing on his licorice.
"That's the idea, yeah." I nod, slipping my leather jacket on.
"Okay- what do I vibe?" Cisco comes to a stop, looking around.
"Well, we're not exactly sure." Nora admits.
I shove my hands in my pockets, "Yeah- all the street cameras were destroyed by the explosion."
"The original ATM was too fried to recover any data." Barry adds in.
"Well, I'm out." Cisco steps back, "I can't vibe a crime scene that does not exist. Literally does not exist. I mean, even this ATM is, like, brand-spanking-new-"
I stop him pointing at the scorch marks right under, "But, this concrete isn't. It still has scorch marks on it."
"Hold this." Cisco shoves his licorice in my hands, then touches the concrete, his eyes widening, getting a vibe.
Barry questions as soon as Cisco gets up, "What'd you see?"
"The victims." Cisco swallows, "They were Grace Gibbons' parents."
"In Grace's mindscape, she saw herself as Cicada-" Nora stares in thought.
"And another Cicada shows up targeting her parents' killer." Barry continued, looking at us.
"It's her." I said it straight up, looking at them, "The new Cicada is Grace Gibbons."
"From the future." Cisco exhales deeply, looking at us, "Time travel sucks."
-
"So, Cicada II is really Grace from the future, and she's trying to get revenge on the meta that murdered her parents and that killer meta is here?" Joe pieced together after we filled him in.
I nod, "Cisco saw the last PIN that was entered into the ATM. The card belongs to Vickie and John Bolen."
"We already went by their house, and a neighbor said they were having a party here." Barry said after me.
"Um, I think this is them." Nora points at a man with his back turned to us, speaking to a woman.
"Excuse me- sir?" I clear my throat, stepping up, him turning around at my voice, as I gesture to the badge attached to my belt, "Detective Zee Allen, we're from CCPD. Are you Mr. John Bolen?"
"I am." He confirms, "How can I help you? What's going on?"
I open my mouth to speak, only for a woman to run over, smiling, "Sorry to be rude, but we're in the middle of a party."
"This won't take long." Joe stepped up, "Do you remember using an ATM on Kingswell and 42nd around May 4th, 2017?"
Barry spoke up, "There was an explosion that day. We think a meta-human might have been involved."
"Hun, why don't you and Alice start gathering the kids for a team photo?" The woman who I assumed with Vickie smiled at John, "I'll talk to the nice officers."
"Okay." John nods and walks away.
Vickie's expression changed, "I can't believe you found me after all this time."
"We just- we want to know what happened that day." I spoke, "Did you blow up that ATM?"
"I-it all happened so fast." She admits, "I touched the machine, and it was like something turned on in me."
Nora stares at her, "You hyper-accelerated the molecules in the ATM, causing a violent chain reaction."
"I just know I saw sparks and ran." She sighs, "Then I heard this explosion and money was flying everywhere. It looked like I was trying to rob the bank. I was too afraid to go back. At least no one got hurt."
Barry hides his hands in his pockets, "Mrs.Bolen, we have reason to believe a killer is targeting you."
"Why?" She questions.
"It's because of your abilities." I told her, "We'd like to put you in federal protection to keep your family safe."
"And what would I tell my husband? Or my daughter?" She looks at us, imitating a whiny woman, "Hey, sorry, Mommy has powers. We all have to leave our lives behind."
"They don't know about your powers?" Nora questions.
"Of course not." She shook her head, "No one does. You think I'm proud of this?"
I swallow, "I think they have a right to know the truth. They're your family."
"And who the hell do you think you are, telling me what to do?" Her tone changed, stepping closer to me.
Barry steps in front of me protectively, "I agree with her. Bottom line, we're just trying to keep you and your family safe."
"We're not going anywhere. That's final." She told us, speaking before leaving, "Please leave."
"She's not safe." Joe looks at us, "We're staying put."
-
"How could Vickie not know she killed two people?" Nora questions, looking at Joe, Barry and I.
Barry sighs, keeping his arms around me, "There was a time in Central City where not all meta attacks were public knowledge."
"Why not?" Nora questions again, "I mean, people should know-"
"Former Mayor Bellows-" I roll my eyes mentioning him, "I tried to keep certain things out of the media. Said he didn't want to create a panic."
"Turns out he had metas on the payroll. Didn't want the heat." Joe adds in, then grabs his phone, "That's Cecile. I'll be right back-"
Nora looks at me, "You were wrong, you know."
"What? I'm never wrong-" I shove my face into Barry's chest, "Barry, tell her I'm never wrong-"
Barry shrugs, rubbing my back, "She's never wrong."
"Mom-" Nora stares at me, "You were this time."
I tightened my grip on Barry while we stood there holding each other, looking at her, my leaning against Barry's chest, "About what?"
"About Vickie not wanting to tell her family about her abilities." Nora spoke, "It's her choice not to tell them."
"Nora, keeping a secret like that from her family is dangerous." I told her, "I mean, they might get hurt or worse."
Nora reasons, "She's just trying to protect them."
Barry nods, speaking for me, "We get that, we do, but I-I used to think that keeping secrets from people for their own good was a noble decision, that it would protect them. But- when you do that, you just rob those people from making their own decisions."
"I mean- I hid this life- from your mom for months, even if she was right by my side, not knowing who was under the mask- risking her life with someone she had no idea who was." Barry went on, as I looked at him, smiling at the example, "I thought I was protecting her from everything- but when she found out- after that day, she made her own decisions- and has so many lives since then. I even did it with you."
Nora stares at Barry, "Like when you didn't want to take me to your past."
Barry hums in response, "I didn't want you to see how painful things got for me as the Flash or how bad things got for your mom."
Barry went on, "But- secrets are like walls, and you can't really know someone with walls between you."
Nora winces, her eyes turning a mix of black and red, gasping loudly.
Barry and I immediately move away from each other and step towards her, "Nora?"
Nora gasps again, her eyes going back to normal, Barry looking at her, "Hey. Are you okay?"
"I must have connected to Grace's mind." Nora swallows, "She's coming. Grace is coming."
-
"I don't see Cicada anywhere." Barry says after running in as the Flash, Nora beside him as XS, looking at me, "Do you?"
"It's the Flash!" A girl's voice fills our ears, our heads snapping towards the sound, a girl looking at Vickie, "Mom, you got Flash and XS cosplayers for the party?"
"Yes, I am the Flash! And I love-" Barry pauses, "Soccer! Do you guys love soccer?"
All the kids cheer, "Yeah!"
I stare at Barry, a wide smile on my lips, Barry continuing, "Awesome! Come with me! Here, let's play some soccer over here. Come on, come on, come on-"
Barry starts to lead them out the back, grabbing my arm mid way, pulling me along, "Help me with the kids-"
"I'm so making fun of you about this-" I giggle, "There is no way I'm gonna let this go-"
Barry looks at me in defeat, "I know- I know."
I stop, letting Barry lead the way, as I gesture towards them, "Come on, come on! Far away from there."
I pat Joe's back when he finally joins us, "Help with the kids-"
Joe nods, putting a fake smile on his lips, gesturing for them to follow Barry.
I run back over to Vickie and Nora, Vickie looking right at me, "What's going on?"
I held my gun in my holster, "Cicada is coming here."
"What?" Her eyes were wide.
"We can move everyone else out of here, but you and your family have to go with XS." I instruct, only to be cut off when we all flew back at the energy blast from Cicada.
Cicada stares right at Vickie, "Murderer."
"Grace, stop." Barry appeared, slowly approaching her.
"She's innocent." Nora got up as did I, "It was an accident."
"There are no accidents, Nora." Cicada uses her abilities to keep them held up against the ceiling.
Vickie grabs a soccer ball, using her abilities, red electricity filling the ball.
"Vickie?" John stares at his wife in shock.
"We have to help Mom." The daughter, Alice began to run towards Vickie.
"Alice!" John yelled after her.
I got up, grabbing Alice right as Vickie threw the ball and Cicada hit it, knocking us all off our feet at the explosion.
"Alice!" Vickie yelled, running over to her daughter that laid in front of me.
"She's barely conscious-" I looked at Barry and Nora.
"My speed's back." Nora phases her hand.
"We need to get them out of here." Barry nods, grabbing us all, rushing out of the destructed party.
-
"You okay?" Barry held me to his side as we stood outside of Grace Gibbons medical room, fixing my hair with his hand, brushing away the flyaways.
I nod, keeping my arms wrapped around him.
"You sure?" Barry stares at me.
"Yeah." I softly said, giving him a small kiss, before leaning my head against his chest, sighing.
"I can't believe that little girl in there grows up to be a time-traveling serial killer." Joe stared at Grace.
Cecile looks at us, "Why can't we just wake her up right now?"
"We tried before." Barry said, "It didn't work."
"What about the meta cure y'all cooked up?" Joe questions.
"We'd need Grace's consent." I sigh deeply.
Barry adds in, "Besides, Caitlin says that her condition is too fragile to even try."
"And I'm assuming that destroying the time-traveling hamster ball, that messes up the timeline?" Joe questions.
"Yeah, it would probably just make things even worse." Barry nods.
"Oh, God!" Cecile cries out, breathing heavily.
"Whoa, what's wrong?" Joe held her up.
"Her mind." Cecile stared at Grace, "It's exactly the same as the Cicada that attacked us at Star Labs. Oh, my God, it's filled with nothing but hatred."
"Nora found out when she went into Grace's mind that Grace could hear Dwyer, even in her coma-" Barry mentioned, "His anger, his rage."
"She was listening." Joe pieced together, "She can carry out his words."
"Uh, hey, guys." Nora ran over to us, "Uh, Alice is back from the OR and she's okay, but her parents are really not."
"Vickie, I asked you to leave!" John's loud shout fills the hall, as we all rushed to Alice's medical room, watching from in the hall.
"She's my daughter." Vickie fought, fighting tears.
"No." Alice said, "I want my dad."
"Can't you see that she's terrified of you?" John shouts, "She could've been killed!"
"I was trying to protect you guys." Vickie's voice fell quiet.
"By lying? You're a meta, Vickie! A human time bomb!" John lashes out, "How do you keep that from us?"
Joe steps in, "Mr. Bolen let's take a breath. Let's step outside."
John leaves with Joe and Cecile, Vickie teaching for her daughter, Alice turning away, Vickie leaving also.

Cultivating Earth [Hiatus]
[This fiction is on indefinite hiatus. I'm currently acting as a 24-hour caregiver for my step-father who had a massive heart attack. I apologize for disappearing so quickly, but sometimes that's just life. I'll return as soon as possible. Sorry everyone!] Zhao Gang, after hundreds of thousands of years cultivating, has finally reached the penultimate threshold. He is ready to ascend to the level of True Immortal. Driven by the need for a place his enemies won't find him, Zhao Gang puts together an audacious plan. He has developed a revolutionary new formation which will allow him to ascend while on even the lowest planes. To avoid drawing attention, he has to choose a plane that is relatively desolate, however. He chooses Earth. Fast forward three thousand years. Zhao Gang discovers what his work has wrought - a cultivation-free culture that has delved the deep mysteries of creation - he can't help but think how this tiny little planet devoid of natural energy could affect the course of all creation. There's only one problem. For that to happen, he has to succeed in cultivating Earth. Notes: Chinese names should be ignored in the social context - they don't mean anything. Sorry for slaughtering such a beautiful tradition. This novel starts off slower than most. If the slow-roll isn't your thing, you might want to give this a pass. If it's not for you, I understand. Also, releases may be broken up into smaller chunks. The goal is 5k words, but definitely more than 4k. If you see a short release, be aware that more is probably coming. I'll be honest and say that I'm struggling with each new scene, if only because I want to balance the scope of vision with good pacing. I hope the work I put into it is worthwhile.

Hello ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to my first attempt at writing a novel. I am preparing to participate in the 2017 NaNoWriMo event so enjoy the first chapter as that's here early only to ensure that I have a place to post once the event starts. This means the first novel/book will have a target of 50,000 words. I'm excited to attempt this challenge despite the hurdles I will have to overcome. I do have a demanding full time job so planning time to write and make weekly releases starting in November will be my biggest challenge. Also, please accept my apologies on my cover. I'm not an artist and the only digital tool available at my disposal is the stock microsoft paint. So I did my best to create a decent cover as I did not want to steal the work of another. If there are those interested by the end of November in donating a new fan made cover then I will look into replacing the old cover.
