❛ new cap, who this? ❜

episode six, season one

"I'm almost there."

Sam's voice crackled through the small radio in Hestia's ear as she walked next to Bucky, the noise from the crowds drowning out everything else.

"What's the plan?" Bucky asked, holding Hestia by the elbow and guiding her through the crowd.

"Karli's gotta be close. Keep your eyes open."

Hestia rolled her eyes while Bucky responded. "Well, it could be anybody."

They passed some soldiers who let them pass through as they greated them. "Sergeant Barnes, Agent Flynn."

Sam spoke again. "And by the way, I called in some backup."

"Excuse me, sir, ma'am, are you supposed to he here?"

Hestia and Bucky turned around, their expression confused as they assessed the man in front of them. Quickly though, the man tapped his face and a mask came off, revealing Sharon under.

"Oh, that's so cool." Hestia muttered to herself.

"It's me." Sharon deadpanned.

Bucky's eyebrows raised. "Sharon, what the hell are you doing here?"

"Relax, no one's looking for me here."

She pulled the two to the side as Sam's smug voice was heard. "Do I hear Sharon?"

"Unfortunately." Bucky groaned.

"Hey, Sam. I thought I'd get the band back together." Sharon spoke up.

Hestia looked towards Bucky. "Isn't that a meme?" When he looked towards her with total confusion, she sighed in defeat.

"Thank you, you're risking a lot coming here."

Sharon shook her head. "I hear pardons aren't all they're cracked up to be."

"Depends on the therapist." Bucky muttered and Hestia held in a laugh.

"They'll move on the building soon. Be ready."

"I wonder how Alpine's doing." Hestia wondered.

Bucky waved her off. "Don't worry, I left him a lot of food when we left your apartment."

"Well shit, so did I." she snorted.

━━━━━━━

"You guys gotta do something, don't let them out of the building."

As Bucky went through the metal detector, it immediately started beeping, Hestia snorting as Sharon muttered an 'oops'.

"Here's one of them." Bucky pointed to a man holding a gun. "I'll get the evac."

Hestia walked after Bucky, looking over her shoulder to make sure nothing happened. As they walked through the building, a woman headed towards them and extended her phone to Bucky.

"Mr. Barnes, it's Karli."

Hestia stopped as she watched Bucky hesitantly take the phone and talk to her. She didn't pay attention to what they were talking as she followed him down the stairs.

Despite the fact that Karli had good intentions in mind, she was beginning to annoy Hestia.

She watched with furrowed eyebrows as Bucky ended the call with Karli and cursed, quickly grabbing Hestia's hand - and ignoring her panicked shriek - and running towards the parking lot under the building.

━━━━━━━

In the parking lot, Bucky quickly found a motorcycle and got on it, then looked at Hestia with raised eyebrows.

"Oh, on the-! Yeah, no, I'm good." she spluttered out.

Bucky rolled his eyes slightly. "Get on the motorcycle and shut up."

Hestia swallowed slightly but got on just as Sharon's voice was heard through the radio. "You two had one job."

"Just deal with the guy." Bucky muttered as he started the motorcycle and took off, Hestia's arms tight around his waist.

Her arms tightened around his waist as they got out on the street, the speed increasing as the wind blew through Hestia's hair, her eyes squinted.

"Well, that's one down!" Sharon exclaimed through the radio.

"What? How?" Hestia asked confused.

"Mercury vapor. Amongst other things."

"Bucky! Hestia!" Sam's voice rang.

Bucky sighed. "I don't fly man, that's your thing."

"What, I do kinda-" Hestia's voice was cut off as Bucky drove faster, the words getting stuck in her throat.

When they arrived at the scene, Hestia's eyes widened when she realized Bucky wasn't slowing down. "Bucky, don't you dare-"

He screeched to a halt and they flew off of the motorcycle, Bucky landing on one of the Flag Smashers as Hestia slowed down to a stop with the help of her powers.

"Oh, for fucks sake, Bucky!" Hestia shouted as Bucky fought the guy. She used her powers to trap him to the ground as Bucky punched him again when a truck exploded behind them.

They quickly let go of the man as they ran to the truck, Bucky punching the door while Hestia silently shook her head, realizing how dumb he could be sometimes. She flicked her wrist slightly and the door broke down.

"Morgenthau!"

"Oh fuck no." Hestia groaned as she heard John's voice. This was just what they needed.

Hestia ushered people out of the truck just in time see John fighting all the Flag Smashers with a knockoff shield.

She gave Bucky a look before she ran towards John, hitting a Flag Smasher off of him and sending him flying into a wall. Her heart leapt in her throat when she heard Bucky scream and she turned to see him fall in a construction site.

"Bucky!"

She dismissed the person she was fighting as she ran towards the construction site, only to see some other people jump down at him, ready to hit him. Without hesitation, Hestia jumped down, landing roughly on her feet even with her powers as she hit the man attacking Bucky before sending him flying into a wall, creating a dent.

"Are you okay?" Hestia panted.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Bucky breathed out.

They glanced up at the sound of a crash only to see a truck on the edge of the building, ready to fall. It was being pulled back and Hestia added her powers to the mix.

The person that was pulling the truck - John - fell seconds later along with the person who pushed them, breaking Hestia's concentration. She lost the grip on the truck and she was ready to see it fall before Sam swooped in and saved the day. He held the truck as Hestia once again helped him and they got it to safety.

Hestia turned in time to see Karli - who also fell down with them - throw a metal rod at Bucky. He caught it just seconds before it could hit him and he looked at her with an expression that could only be described as disbelief.

Sam flew down next, hitting all the Flag Smasher with the shield. Karli stood up as she faced Sam, taking off her mask.

"You of all people bought into that bullshit?"

"I'm trying something different." Sam answered. "Maybe you should do the same."

There were several explosions as canisters of smoke fell at their feet, quickly engulfing them. "Shit, shit, shit." Hestia muttered.

"This way." Sam commented and she followed after him along with Bucky and John.

They arrived at a point where they needed to split up and Hestia didn't want to leave Sam all alone but he told her that if anyone could keep an eye on John, it would be her. So reluctantly, Hestia followed after Bucky and John, leaving Sam alone.

They searched the place thoroughly but they didn't find anyone.

It was then that Bucky remembered the app that the Flag Smashers had and the three together figured out a spot where the signal would be.

In the meantime, John called the police so they could arrive at the scene.

They rounded the corner as the group of Flag Smashers arrived as John quoted. "Mercy bears richer fruit than strict justice."

"Great app, by the way." Hestia snickered as Bucky showed them the app on his phone.

The police quickly surrounded them and put them under arrest as the three turned and walked away.

"Lincoln, really?" Bucky asked as he looked at John while Hestia chuckled.

"Great man. Great quote."

"Not when you say it."

━━━━━━━

Hestia watched Sam fly down, Karli limp in his arms. She gripped Bucky's hand, her eyebrows furrowed in concern.

Sam walked toward the crowd as several reporters kept asking questions. Hestia watched as several politicians thanked Sam for his effort and for saving them.

Her ears perked up as Sam started talking about the Flag Smashers and she smirked slightly when she felt a speech coming.

"These labels, 'terrorists', 'refugee', 'thug', they're often used to get around the question, why?"

"Those settlements that happened five years ago, do you think it is fair for governments to have to support them?"

"Yes."

"And the people who reappeared only to find someone else living in their family home, they just end up homeless? Look, I get it. But you have no idea how complicated this situation is."

"You know what? You're right." Sam stated. "And that's a good thing. We finally have a common struggle now. Think about that. For once, all the people who've been begging, and I mean, literally begging for you to feel how hard any given day is, now you know. How did it feel to be helpless? Now if you could remember what it was like to be helpless and face a force so powerful it could erase half the planet, you would know that you're about to have the exact same impact. This isn't about easy decision, Senator."

"You just don't understand!" the Senator shook his head.

Sam scoffed. "I'm a black man carrying the stars and stripes. What don't I understand? Every time I pick this thing up, I know there are millions of people who are gonna hate me for it. Even now, here, I feel it. The stares, the judgement. And there's nothing I can do to change it. Yet, I'm still here. No super serum, no blond hair, or blue eyes. The only power I have is that I believe we can do better. We can't demand that people step up if we don't meet them halfway."

"Look, you control the banks! Shit, you can move borders! You can knock down a forest with an email, you can feed a million people with a phone call. But the question is, who's in the room when you're making those decisions? Is it the people you're gonna impact? Or is it just more people like you?"

Sam looked at the ambulance Karli's body was in. "I mean, this girl died trying to stop you, and no one has stopped for one second to ask why. You've gotta do better, Senator. You've gotta step up. Because if you don't, the next Karli will. And you don't wanna see 2.0. People believed in her cause so much that they helped her defy the strongest governments in the world. Why do you think that is?"

"Look, you people have just as much power as an insane god or a misguided teenager. Question you have to ask yourself is, 'How are you gonna use it?'"

Sam walked away from the scene and went towards Hestia and Bucky, but not before giving John a grateful nod.

"Sorry, we were making out-" Bucky smirked as he put his arm around Hestia's waist. "So all I heard was 'a black guy in stars and stripes'"

The both chuckled before Hestia launched herself at Sam, giving him the tightest hug. "I'm so proud of you, Sammy."

Sam squeezed her back. "Thank you, Hestia."

Bucky smiled and patted Sam's back as he put Hestia down. "Nice job, Cap."

They walked towards Sharon who was leaning on a car, looking at her wound. At the call of her name, she looked up at them. "Blocking my light."

"We gotta get you to a hospital." Sam said, concerned.

Hestia rolled his eyes slightly as she hummed. "She's not gonna listen."

"It's not the worst thing that's happened to me all week."

"Told you." Bucky said, sending Hestia a cheeky grin.

Sharon sighed. "Look, I'm sorry for how things ended down there. For what it's worth, suit looks good on you."

Sam chuckled. "Thanks."

"Can we get out of here? Please." Bucky looked at Hestia and Sharon.

Hestia patted his cheek. "Come on, you big baby." she grinned as they started walking away.

Sam headed towards the crowd of reporters, shaking his head with a smile before he stopped dead in his tracks and yelled after them.

"Wait what do you mean, making out? Are you two together!?"

━━━━━━━

A knock on her door prompted Hestia to get up from her couch. She opened the door as she came face to face with Bucky. She smiled before she realized the tears in his eyes.

She ushered him inside as she closed the door before she turned to him and put her hands on his cheeks, him leaning into it. "What's wrong, Buck?"

He sighed as he out his arms around her waist, his head in the crook of her neck as he hugged her. "I did it. I told him the truth about his son."

Hestia put one hand on the back of his head, stroking his head as she kissed the side of his face. "I'm proud of you, Bucky. You've come such a long way. I'm so proud of you."

Bucky pulled back, sniffling a little while Hestia wiped a tear. He kissed her softly, filled with love until a meow was heard.

They looked down at Alpine who was at their feet. Bucky smiled slightly before he picked him up, chuckling lowly when he nuzzled his head into his metal palm.

"We need to go at Sam's place, remember?" Hestia smiled slightly, playing with some of his hair.

"Yeah." Bucky breathed out.

━━━━━

Hestia pushed back the sunglasses on her nose as she arrived at Sam's, Bucky at her side with a cake in his hands. She laughed when he dodged the kids' attack before pretending to be struck down by them.

Everyone was laughing and Hestia was sure everyone was there - and she meant everyone.

They ate cake and played with the kids, Bucky lifting them up with his metal arm. Stolen kisses between Hestia and Bucky while Sam yelled at them about PDA.

Everything was happy and they finally felt at peace.
