❛ i wanna ruin our friendship ❜
episode five, season one
Hestia knew she shouldn't have gone after Karli, but Bucky and Sam asked her too and quite frankly, she was speechless after what John Walker did.
So she looked for Karli, but the young girl fled the scene quicker than ever and Hestia realized looking for her had no use.
She couldn't get the scene out of her head, John above the man, the shield coming down on him, blood splattering in the ground, the shield smeared in blood. The shield, something that represented freedom, became a lethal weapon, something used to kill.
So seeing Sam in the same position the second she entered the warehouse, made her blood run cold. John was holding the shield above Sam, seconds away from hitting him with it when Hestia clenched her fists and stopped him in midair.
Bucky took it as his cue to hit John and bring him to the ground. Hestia ran towards Sam, her hands shaking from nerves as she looked over him, searching for any fatal injury. Luckily, there was none and Hestia found herself letting out a small breath.
In a matter of seconds, the three had John against a wall, ripping the shield out of his arms. The super soldier serum in his veins did not stop his arm from breaking when he finally let go of the shield and they all slumped almost in relief.
"It's mine." John hissed in a venomous tone as he glared at them, his arm hanging limp by his side.
"It's over, John." Sam shook his head.
"It's mine."
When he walked towards them, ready to throw a punch, Bucky caught his arm and punched John in the face causing him to fall down, panting harshly.
Bucky handed Sam the shield and stood to the side as he waited for them. Sam followed him soon and before she could leave, Hestia crouched down next to John and grabbed him harshly by the collar.
"Stay the hell away from us." she glared, her eyes narrowed to slits as she gave him one last punch in the jaw, causing John to pass out.
━━━━━━━
Sirens echoed in the backround as Hestia leaned on a table with her hip, the shield next to her. Sam was talking but Hestia could barely pay attention.
"The GRC is conducting raids to try and find Karli, but so far they've only found her followers. They've searched this camp, and just like the last camp, nothing. She's gone. We'll never find her."
"Hey, you got your sleeve back!" Torres said as he entered the room and Hestia managed to smile a little when Bucky gave a deadpan look in return.
Bucky stood straighter as he started walking away, stopping a little at the door as he looked back.
"Are you off to take care of Zemo?" Sam teased lightly, before analyzing Bucky's expression. Extending his arm, Sam hit Hestia in her shoulder, causing her to snap out of whatever trance she was in and look at him.
When Hestia looked at Sam, he was gesturing harshly with his head towards Bucky, who was standing awkwardly at the door. "Hestia's coming with you, Buck!"
"I am?" Hestia looked at Sam strangely before taking in Bucky's expression. "I mean, yes I am!"
She scowled slightly at Sam - getting a smile in return - before she jogged towards Bucky and caught up with him. "Let's get our alcoholic sugar daddy!"
Bucky shook his head as the two started walking away, his metal hand sending shivers from where it was on her back. "You really need to stop saying that before someone hears you and thinks you're serious."

"I am serious." Hestia wiggled her eyebrows. "I'm not made of money but Zemo is."
"Come on, you menace." Bucky chuckled lightly.
━━━━━━━
Hestia regretted not ever visiting the Sokovia memorial. There were many memories made in Sokovia, mostly unpleasant, but Sokovia was still the last place she saw Pietro alive.
Zemo was standing in front of the memorial when they approached him. Hestia thought this was something Bucky needed - a real talk with Zemo - so she decided to stay a few steps back and not interfere.
"I thought you'd be here sooner." Zemo announced. "Don't worry. I've decided I'm not going to kill you."
Hestia couldn't hold in her scoff.
"Imagine my relief." Bucky deadpanned.
Zemo turned to look at them when he heard the click of Bucky's gun. "The girl has been radicalized beyond salvation. I warned Sam but he didn't listen to me. He's as stubborn as Steve Rogers before him. But you, they literally programmed you to kill. James, do what needs to be done."
Hestia's fists tightened behind her back and she refrained from making a remark as Zemo continued.
"Karli has people everywhere, and there's only one way to make sure she cannot continue her mission."
"I appreciate the advice." Bucky said sarcastically. "But we're gonna do it our own way."
"Yeah." Zemo chuckled. "I was afraid you'd say that."
Bucky clenched his jaw as he raised the gun and leveled it with Zemo's head. He kept it there for a couple of seconds and then he pulled the trigger.
No bullet came out.
Bucky lowered his gun, his expression unreadable as he pulled the bullets out of his pocket and let them fall to the ground.
Seconds later, the Dora Milaje walked towards them and two women stood next to Zemo, Ayo behind him.
"Ladies." Zemo greeted them before looking at Bucky. "I took the liberty of crossing off my name in your book. I hold no grudges for what you thought you had to do. Goodbye James." he sighed before looking at Hestia behind him.
Hestia narrowed her eyes, thinking of what he was going to say, only to be suprised. "I don't do donations, but I can't use my plane from prison. You can have it if you wish."
Hestia spluttered out a response, her eyes wide. "I would definitely like your plane - yes, I mean, of course I accept your gift, yes."
Zemo nodded before he walked away, the two women on his side. Ayo stood next to Hestia and Bucky as she talked. "We will take him to the Raft. Where he will live out his days. It would be prudent to make yourself scarce in Wakanda for the time being, White Wolf."
"Fair enough." Bucky sighed.
Ayo started walking away before Bucky called out. "Hey! I may have another favor to ask you."
━━━━━━━
Hestia looked at the harbor with a smile. People were working together, they were laughing, they were happy and of course, she could hear Sam's voice from a mile away.
When Bucky helped move some heavy stuff, Sam finally noticed the two. He put the case they got from Ayo on a car. "Just dropping this off. You can sign for it and I'll go."
"Buck, you haven't eaten in a while." Hestia pointed out but he waved her off.
"I called in a favor from the Wakandans."
A pipe burst and Sam quickly went to fix it when his sister, Sarah, called him. After he couldn't fix it, Bucky twisted it, successfully repairing it.

He got weird looks from both Hestia and Sam.
"Why didn't you use the metal arm?"
"I don't always think of it immediatly." Bucky sighed as he looked at them. "I'm right handed."
"Of course he is." Hestia chuckled before her eyes widened. "Sam, Zemo gave me his plane! Like a real, actual plane!"
"Shut up!"
"No really!"
"So, you're taking me to Hawaii then."
The rest of the days was spent fixing the boat and meeting Sarah, who Hestia already knew and loved. Hestia also played with Sam's nephews who loved her powers and always asked her to float them around.
After it was decided that Bucky and Hestia would stay there for the night, they quickly went to sleep. Unfortunately, there was only one spare couch so the two had to sleep together.
And so in the morning they woke up because Sam's nephews were playing with the shield, Bucky and Hestia were in a tight spot - literally.
Bucky was on the edge of the couch, almost falling off while Hestia was on top of him, her hair all over the place. The boys quickly ran away when they saw that the two were awake.
"You're really comfortable, Buck." Hestia grumbled against his chest, eyes still closed.
Bucky chuckled. "Yeah, well I'm going to fall off the couch any minute, so are you gonna move?"
"No."
Bucky sighed, an amused smile playing on his lips as his arms tightened around her and he moved a bit so he wouldn't fall off the couch. Hestia got more comfortable on his chest and soon enough she was asleep again.
When they finally woke up, they walked to the harbor again. Bucky climbed down to help Sam some more while Hestia went to look for Sarah.
The two women talked for an hour before they finally decided to go look for Sam and Bucky. They were lucky that they found them because the two were definitely ruining the water pump.
They were banished to the house and Hestia decided to join them.
She licked her lollipop as she watched Sam throw the shield from tree to tree, each safety mat ripping a little from time to time.
"Feels weird." Sam commented after he caught the shield. "Picking it up again."
He threw it again and this time Bucky caught it.
Hestia almost choked on her lollipop.
"The legacy of the shield is complicated, to say the least."
Bucky sighed. "When Steve told me what he was planning, I don't think either of us understood what it felt like for a black man to be handed the shield. How could we? I owe you an apology. I'm sorry."
Bucky held out the shield to Sam who took it with a nod.
"Whatever happened with Walker, it wasn't your fault. I get it. It's just, that shield's the closest thing I've got left to a family, so when you retired it, it made me feel like I had nothing left. Made me question everything. You, Steve, me." Bucky pulled out his notebook. "You know, I've got his book, and I just figured if it worked for him, then it'd work for me."
"I understand, man. But Steve is gone. And this might be a suprise, but it doesn't matter what Steve thought." Sam commented. He threw the shield again before he continued. "You gotta stop looking to other people to tell you who you are. Let me ask you. You still having those nightmares?"
"All the time." Bucky shook his head with a small smile while Hestia frowned. "It means I remember. It means a part of me is still there. Which means a part of the Winter Soldier's still in me."
"You up for a little tough love?" Sam raised an eyebrow. "You want to climb out of the hell you're in, do the work. Do it."
"I've been making amends."
"No, you weren't amending, you were avenging. You were stopping all the wrongdoers you enabled as the Winter Soldier, because you thought it would bring you closure. You go to these people and say 'sorry' because you think it'll make you feel better, right? But you gotta make them feel better. You gotta go to them and be of service. I'm sure there's at least one person in that book who needs closure about something, and you're the only person who can give it to them."
"Probably a dozen." Bucky sighed.
"That's cool." Sam shrugged. "Start with one."
"Good talk."
The two chuckled before they shook hands. "You know, Karli won't stop."
Bucky smiled. "Call me when you have a lead and I'll be there."
The three started walking away, Hestia with her lollipop still in her hand.
"Not necessarily as a team."
"Nope."
"We're not that good."
"Definitely not."
"We're professionals."
"Definitely."
"And uh, we're partners."
"Co-workers."
"But we're also a couple of guys with a mutual friend."
"Friend's now gone."
"So, we're a couple of guys."
"I can live with that."
"Perfect."
"You two are idiots." Hestia shook her head.
Sam chuckled. "I almost missed Hestia's commentary."
"Hey!" Hestia complained. "I'm right here. And you two were having a moment, a weird one, but a moment nonetheless. Also, Sam, I need to check up on Alpine so I'm going home. But I'll be back, don't worry."
Sam rolled his eyes. "Run along."
Hestia raised her middle finger at him as she followed after Bucky who was walking away. She walked in step with him before she finally looked at him. "Wanna see Alp before you go?"
"Why not? I'm his favorite anyways." Bucky smirked.
"As if!"
━━━━━━━
Hestia leaned on the doorway as she watched Bucky play with Alpine. He really was Alpine's favorite - not that Hestia would ever admit it out loud.
Bucky nuzzled Alpine in his arms before he looked up at Hestia. She smirked slightly before shaking her head and heading towards the kitchen to get some food.
She opened a cupboard and searched for something that might catch her eye when Bucky spoke. She jumped slightly when she realized he was besides her - she didn't even hear him.
"I'm sorry I'm leaving you alone - well with Sam, but you know what I mean."
Hestia turned around and jumped on the counter, her legs swinging back and forth as she looked at Bucky. "It's fine, I mean Wakanda is amazing, who wouldn't want to go there?"
Bucky chuckled slightly. "Yeah, but you aren't there."
Hestia's breath caught in her throat as he walked closer towards her. He leaned one hand on the counter next to her thigh while the other - the metal one - was on the small of her back, tracing patterns lightly.
Hestia swallowed harshly as she looked at Bucky, seeing his eyes darken and his jaw tick. "I really want to kiss you right now." Bucky whispered lightly, almost afraid to ruin the moment. "But I won't push you. And if you'll never see me the way I see you, that's okay too. You can break my heart, you can break it a thousand times. It was only ever yours to break anyway."
Hestia's breath was shallow as she put her arms around his neck and toyed with the ends of his hair. Bucky closed his eyes at the sensation and leaned his forehead on hers.
She used the heel of her foot to bring him closer, so he could stand in between her legs. Bucky's hands moved to her hips where he rubbed patterns again, the material of her shirt riding up a little, causing him to touch her skin.
Hestia looked into his eyes as she rubbed his jaw slightly, the stubble bringing a small smile to her lips.
"Kiss me then."
Bucky didn't waste a second before his lips crashed on hers, all the emotion he was keeping in going to that kiss. He kissed her like it would be the last time, his arms tightening around her until there was no space left between them.
They fit like two puzzle pieces, just perfect for eachother. Hestia's hands tangled in his short hair as she panted into the kiss. Bucky pulled away slightly so he could nip at her bottom lip before going back into the kiss, one of his arms going on her lower back, causing Hestia to arch into him.
It was perfect, better than he imagined. And Bucky cursed all the Gods he knew when he realized he needed to break the kiss in order to breathe. He didn't want to, he would gladly die at her hands if it meant she would kiss him one more time.
They were panting when they broke the kiss, and Bucky started kissing all around her mouth. He kissed her cheeks, he kissed her nose, he kissed the corner of her mouth, he kissed her forehead.
Hestia sighed in content when he kissed her neck lightly. She gasped when he kissed a certain spot and she could almost feel Bucky's smirk against her skin as he kissed that spot again and again, certainly leaving a mark.
He pulled back as he leaned his forehead on hers again, his lips pulling into a smile. "Now, how am I supposed to leave?" he asked playfully but quietly.
Hestia sighed dramatically as she kissed the corner of his mouth. "I'll be sure to never forget you, Sergeant. I mean, I could take you to Wakanda on my plane. You know, the one I got from Zemo?"
Bucky chuckled lightly as he looked at her, his right hand brushing her cheek lightly. His eyes were brighter than ever, Hestia noted.
There he was, the Bucky Barnes everyone knew. The carefree soul with an amazing heart, with a beaming smile and sparkling eyes.
There was also darkness in Bucky Barnes, darkness that no machine could ever erase.
But his darkness that brought others nightmares brought Hestia her sweetest dreams.

AV Online was just a flash in the pan—a harsh, experimental land which lost most of its players in mere weeks. Only the dedicated few remained, carving out their destinies in corners of the vast abandoned world. Lily Quinn wasn't one of them. With a career worth millions in the esports world, she didn't have time for a game like Avo—but when an exclusive beta test for the new version showed up on her doorstep, she couldn't say no… as much as she wanted to. Literally hooked into the simulation, Lily reluctantly entered a world beyond anything she'd ever dreamed of. Accompanied by seven other beta testers desperate to save their beloved game, Lily dives into a vibrant, beautiful world, where mystery and adventure waits around every corner. Despite her reservations, Lily finds a joyful escape in Avo, shattering her cold, hollow reality. It was just a game though… until the group discovered they couldn't log out. Trapped in a game with no rules, and surrounded by cutthroat players eager to kill for a quick windfall, Lily and her ragged band have no choice but to fight their way out, or die in a game that has turned all too real. Hi there! I'm setting off on yet another adventure, come join me :3 Unusually for me, there's only one perspective this time, and it's quite a bit more action-oriented than I usually write. Don't worry, though: everything's still as character-driven as always, and I never get tired of writing dialogue. Just to acknowledge it up front: this story is heavily inspired by EVE Online and the many stories generated by that world. However, since this is a fantasy setting, not sci-fi, don't expect any real parallels. Chapter publish rate for this one will be whenever I write them, as with Epilogue. I don't expect to move as fast here though, since it's not for NaNo. The plan is chapters somewhere in the 4k-5k range, and hopefully frequently. The Last Science takes priority as always though. Special thanks to Reaver and Ace Arriande for pushing me to get this going, and to all my fellow writers whom I've stolen from been inspired by. You're all wonderful people and I love you Quick reminder: Patrons get to read ahead of what's published! Also, try my other works: The Last Science — A Tale of Modern Magic Epilogue — A Post-Fantasy Psychodrama What are you still doing on the synopsis? Get to reading! NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/
