《Rise of the New Olympians (The New Olympians Saga #1)》Chapter 42 ◈ Wary Allies

A day after waking up from my 'vision sleep', which I decided to call it that, Demetrius spent the whole day giving me a tour around his, or our, mansion so I wouldn't get myself lost again. He showed me quite a lot of stuff, like the ballroom, the dining area, the library, the music room and other fancier rooms that I'd never thought were a thing.
The mere thought of my father, my family having all this wealth got me excited and appalled at the same time. But as much as I wanted to grant his wishes for me to stay in the mansion for a while, I couldn't stop thinking about Zeus, Athena, or Poseidon back home. They probably were still trying to decipher the riddle on the scroll I translated or busy looking for me. Either way, I was homesick.
I wish I could just give them a call and tell them I was fine, but with Demetrius shooting me jovial looks during my tour, I decided against it in fear of ruining his cheerful mood. He wasn't kidding when he said he wanted to make it up for me.
I still can't believe Demetrius is my father. As much as I'd like to feel all teary-eyed that we met, I didn't know what to feel. If Ben didn't tell me he was dead, I've always thought I'd meet him in some awkward way and just. . . not talk about it.
As for the Rogues, not so much.
Demetrius thought it was a great idea to announce it during dinner. I didn't want to join them on their table, saying that his butler Jean-Paul told me he'd bring my meal into my room, but he insisted that I eat with them.
And here I was, keeping my eyes on my food, a beef stew with mashed potatoes, as I listened to them argue.
"What?!" Eloise, or Artemis, exclaimed, rising from her seat. She sat a few seats away from me, which I was thankful for. "You must be joking!"
"Doesn't sound like a good one to me," Raymond, Hermes's Chosen, muttered in front of me. I didn't hear a comment from Alistair, who sat beside him on his wheelchair. Yet.
"I kid you not," Demetrius said. "She's my long-lost daughter. The talisman I gave her, which I created, is proof."
I looked up and Eloise glared at me with her silver eyes. I stared back, matching her gaze with my own.
"Bitch," she angrily thought.
Alistair gazed at Demetrius. "That's why you specifically told me to look for the talisman among them and take it. You knew one of them had it in their possession."
"I had my suspicions," Demetrius said.
"You were the one who stole my necklace?" I stared at Alistair, my eyes almost bulging out of their sockets. "But when, and how?"

Alistair gave me a smug look. "What happens in Italy, stays in Italy."
Eloise slowly sat down to her chair, scowling. "Between you and her, I don't see any family resemblance at all. That's one proof that she might be an impostor."
I couldn't help but snort at her remark. She rolled her eyes and continued eating her food, her steely gaze still at me.
Demetrius glanced at each one of us. "I know this is all happening too sudden, but I want you three to behave yourselves and not hurt her, understood?"
With fork at hand, Eloise stabbed her meat angrily. "But she's with the enemy! She killed my brother! How could you just let this slide?"
"She has a point," Raymond added.
"I didn't kill your brother," I snapped. "For your information, he was the one trying to kill me—"
"You should've run away like a coward!"
"You think I didn't want to?" I retorted. "I didn't run because if I did, you would've gotten the hammer!"
"Well, it was useless since we still took it from you anyway—"
A strong fist landed on the table, the plates near Demetrius clattering. "I've had enough of this. I want us to have a peaceful meal tonight. Is that too much of a request?"
Eloise harrumphed. "Yes, and I won't stand by it."
She pushed herself from her chair and stalked off, leaving her half-eaten food behind. The room was quiet before Alistair cleared his throat. I turned my attention to him.
"If you all wouldn't mind, I'll leave to my workshop and continue working on the cryogenic chamber that's so important." He gave me a bored glance. "I'm thinking of freezing myself when it's no longer occupied."
Alistair put a hand on the joystick in front of his armrest and moved it around, his wheelchair rolling back from the table and towards the door. A manservant standing beside the door opened it for him and he wheeled away without another word. Raymond coughed.
Groaning, Demetrius gazed at the green-eyed boy. "Don't tell me you're also leaving."
Raymond raised a brow. "Uh. . . no? Why would I do that?" He scooped some potatoes with his spoon. "Unlike those two snobs, I'm hungry. Redhead here won't make me leave and waste my food easily."
Just like the other day, he winked at me before chucking the food into his mouth. A small smile found its way onto my lips. Demetrius sighed in relief.
The three of us resumed eating with Raymond and Demetrius chatted between themselves. The latter wanted me to join in their conversation but my mind was too distracted to eat and talk at the same time.
I know that thinking about it was stupid, but why would Eloise and Alistair hate me, other than me being their enemy once? As far as I'm concerned, I didn't do anything wrong to them. I think.

It didn't take long for me to finish up my fill. I excused myself to my father before leaving the dining area and heading to my room. With the full house tour Demetrius gave me earlier in the day, I was now able to navigate around the hallways, which felt very satisfying. I was kinda getting annoyed of people showing me around like a lost kid in a maze.
Soon, I stopped in front of my door. I grasped the doorknob, and the door swung open.
Weird. I thought I locked it—
"Hey, redhead."
I suppressed the urge to scream. Raymond sat at one of the room's couches near the fireplace, his arm lazily dangling on the side. My eyes narrowed as he looked at me with a mischievous glint.
"What are you doing here? How did you get here?" I asked. "I remember locking the room before I left."
He smirked. "I've been picking the mansion's doors for a while now. You have no idea how easy it is to unlock doors from the 1700s."
"Yeah sure. Whatever," I said. "I thought I heard that you were going to your own room."
Rising from the seat, he shrugged. "Yeah. My room's in the same hallway, so I'll be quick."
I turned around to close the door but a strong grip pulled by my other arm and pushed me to the wall. I winced as my back felt sore from the sudden impact.
Raymond, his hands pressing me on my shoulders, glowered at me. For the first time since I came here, I gulped in fear.
"W-What do you want from me?" I dared to ask.
He scoffed. "Nothing. I just want to tell you something. Something really important."
I waited for him to continue.
"Eloise hasn't been herself since Fishface killed Elijah, and you being in this house made things worse," he said. "I don't care if Master Demetrius is your dad, I won't hesitate and kill you if you even think of messing with me or my friends."
"Why does everyone think I'm going to do something?" I grumbled. "I swear to Hera I'm not! You and your friends took me here, so will you please let me go now? My back hurts like hell and I think my arm just got sprained. And even though this will sound stupid, I'm gonna tell daddy that you're bullying me if you don't stop harassing me."
Raymond slowly let go. I was going to rub one of my shoulders when he suddenly laughed. My eyebrows furrowed, frowning at his sudden change of mood.
"Sorry." He sighed, wiping a tear from his eye. "You were right, you sounded really stupid. Funny, but stupid."
"Great, now I'm funnier than Hermes's Chosen," I muttered, crossing my arms. "Will you please get out of my room? You're annoying."
Raising his arms in surrender, he walked to the door. "Alright, alright. I'm going."
I sighed. "Thank you."
"Oh, I almost forgot." He turned around just beside the door frame. "You'll join us in our daily training session, six in the morning sharp. Your 'daddy's' orders."
I slammed the door shut just as Raymond started chuckling in the hallway.
Ugh. The nerve with that guy!
Caressing my sore back, I strode towards the bed. The bouncy mattress gave in as I laid down and I tucked myself under a soft blanket that was folded beside me. I sighed in delight.
At least this place has a very comfy bed.
Light rain began to pour outside the window, raindrops pattering against the glass. With the calming sound by the background, it didn't take long for my eyes to droop and—
A creaking noise sounded, making me jolt from my bed.
My gaze darted around the dim-lit room. "Who's there?"
No one answered. Hm. Maybe I'm just hearing things. Or maybe not.
I faked a groan. "Raymond, I swear if this is another—"
A hand clamped onto my mouth. I froze.
"Who are you talking about, Ames?" a familiar male voice said.
I turned beside me, and two blue eyes stared back at me.
"Zeus?" My eyes widened at the sight of a friendly face. "What are you doing here? How did you get here?"
"Shh!" He darted his eyes around as if someone would hear us. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you or something?"
"No, I'm fine," I hesitated. "How in the world did you find me?"
"It's a long story, I'll explain later. We gotta move." When I didn't move a muscle, he took my hand and pulled me out of the bed. "Come on, let's go."
I jerked my arm away from him, standing still beside the bed. "Wait. . . What are you doing? A-Are you taking me somewhere?"
Zeus turned around and stared at me incredulously. "Isn't it obvious? We're rescuing you from this place. Now, come on."
"We?" I repeated. "You mean, Athena and Poseidon are here too?"
"Yeah, yeah." He nodded hastily, then held me by the shoulders. "Ames, will you please ask questions later and focus for a sec? There's no time for this."
"No, wait!" I shrugged his hands off. He blinked in surprise. "I mean— Why are you in such a hurry? I-Is there something wrong?"
His lips pressed into a thin line. "We're going to blow up the mansion."
