《Rise of the New Olympians (The New Olympians Saga #1)》Chapter 06 ◈ Principal

A while later, the nurse came into my room to check on me, asking me if I was feeling anything out of the ordinary. I told her about the headache I had and she prescribed me some painkillers. Thankfully, the medicine worked its magic and I felt better as new in minutes. Probably an hour later, the Olympian siblings took me out of the school clinic so I could meet their mother.

The moment we were in the hallway, Athena cleared her throat and looked at her brothers. She shot both of them an 'I'm-outta-here' look before heading off.

"Wait, why's Athena not coming with us?" I asked.

Not that I wanted her to be near me. The girl was too mean for me to handle.

Zeus shrugged. "For some reason, she's been avoiding Mom recently. No idea why."

"She's not much of a mama's girl, then," I joked.

"She has her reasons," Poseidon said. "But for now, let's get going."

The two brothers led the way out of the building. We passed by the rest of the school buildings and a wide garden filled with various flora until we stopped in front of the mini-Parthenon building I spotted earlier.

I exhaled. Okay. . . It's just a normal visit to the principal. Poseidon said that she'll only talk to me about all this Chosen stuff and whatnot. It's not like I got into trouble or anything in my first day of class. Yet.

"You okay, Ames?" Zeus suddenly asked, interrupting my train of thought. "I know we're not close—not yet, anyways—but you wouldn't mind if I call you that, right?"

I rapidly blinked at him. "Huh? Um, yeah. Sure."

He chuckled. "You're nervous, aren't you?"

I pursed my lips. "How could you tell?"

He gestured at the necklace intertwined with my fingers. I didn't realize I was fiddling with the accessory until he pointed it out. Smiling sheepishly, I quickly hid the necklace under my blouse and put my hand in my blazer's pocket.

"You don't have to worry, Amelia," Poseidon told me, his tone reassuring.

"Yeah, he's right," Zeus added. "Just relax. Our mom's pretty chill."

Inside, at one side of the lobby was a desk similar to the one in the dorms. A spectacled lady sat behind it typing on her computer. The moment she perked up, I turned away to see Zeus and Poseidon already in the elevator. I hurried inside just as the doors slid close.

From the three buttons on one side of the doors, Poseidon pressed the uppermost one, prompting the elevator to move up. A second later, the doors slowly opened, revealing a rustic-looking office.

At the center was a large wooden desk with a black office chair behind it. Four round chairs were at the front of the desk. A coffee-brown bookcase was installed on one of the walls, books of all colors and sizes filling its shelves to the brim. A woman with a book at hand stood in front of it when she turned around and saw us.

"Zeus, Poseidon!" the woman exclaimed, smiling wide. "To what do I owe you the pleasure?"

"Hey, mom," Zeus said.

"Hello." She then gazed at me. "And hello to you, dear. Do I know you?"

I waved at her awkwardly. "Um, hi. . . I'm Amelia Kingston."

"Well, I'm Principal Olympian, but please, call me Rhea," she said. "The school has a lot of students, but I don't recognize you. Are you, by any chance, a transferee?"

"Yeah— I mean, yes," I said quickly. "I got a scholarship from the school."

"Oh," she said. "If I'm not mistaken, dear, you're the very first person to apply for the scholarship. I suppose a congratulation is in order."

"Thanks, I guess. . ."

"We know you have a busy schedule today, Mother," Poseidon began, "but we'd like to talk to you. It's important."

"You know I can always spare time for my children." Placing the book back on the shelf, she strode to the desk and gestured at the seats in front of her. "Please. Have a seat."

Once we were settled, Rhea stood straight with her hands on the armrests. "What's the important issue at hand?"

Zeus leaned on his seat, his hands on the back of his head. "So. . . Who's gonna spill the beans? Because I won't."

Poseidon and I exchanged odd looks. He nodded his head at his mother, motioning me to talk. I shook my head vehemently, which made him sigh.

Why in the world does he think that I'm gonna talk? I met the principal just now, so we're not close!

Rhea's fingers tapped on the chair's side. "Well? I'm waiting."

Poseidon took a deep breath. "Amelia here is a. . . Chosen."

His mother raised a brow. "I beg your pardon?"

"Ames's got powers, mom," Zeus said. "You know, a person dreams of a Greek god in their sleep, gets the Bestowal and—"

Rhea groaned. "I know what you mean, Zeus! But what I was saying is. . . are you serious?"

The two brothers nodded.

She gazed at me. "Is this true, dear?"

"I just discovered it today. . . in a weird accident," I answered.

"T-That's wonderful!" She clapped her hands in excitement. "I can't believe we found another Chosen after so many years."

"You. . . have been looking for people like me for years?"

"Yes, dear," Rhea said. "You see, other than being special, you serve a greater purpose. You are meant to protect the world."

"Protect the world," I repeated. "Like. . . Like a hero?"

Rhea nodded. "Many millennia ago, the twelve Olympian gods ruled the world and its mortal inhabitants in a reign of peace of harmony. Everything was in order just like in the myths we all know: brave heroes leading quests for glory, creatures rampaging around every now and then, and so on."

That doesn't sound so peaceful to me.

"But then, everything changed," Rhea continued. "The Olympians disappeared without a trace, and with them, the mythical world. No more monsters, no more gods, no more magic. As time passed, the knowledge of the gods eventually declined to mere myths."

I couldn't help but shake my head in disbelief. "Is that even legit? I mean, the myths. . . they're called myths for a reason. They're just stories."

Rhea smiled. "That is true, my dear, but aren't stories based on certain truths? It's just the same case as when someone shares their day with you. They might forget to mention some details or add new ones, but in the end, it's essentially still the same tale."

I let her words sink in. I guess she's right about that. . .

"If you don't mind, will you tell me your patron god?" she asked, leaning on her chair. "If you have already seen them, that is."

"I. . . um, it's Hera," I said. "The goddess of marriage."

Her eyes widened. "Hera? That can't be. . ."

"Is that a bad thing?"

"No, no. Not at all." She inched closer to me. "Tell me. What did she show you in your sleep?"

I told her with as much detail as possible about the dream, from meeting her face-to-face, to the weird scene I saw with the Olympian gods.

"There's nothing new about that vision you saw about the gods." Rhea sighed. "My children already saw that. As for Hera. . . well, she sounds like she's still the same goddess as ever."

I wonder what did she mean by that.

She relaxed in her seat. "So you were gifted the power of telepathy?"

"Um, yes," I said, then quickly added, "But don't worry! I'm not reading your mind right now. I-I somehow turned my power off, if that makes sense."

"It's okay, dear," Rhea said. "I don't have anything to hide anyways."

"So what are we going to do now?" Zeus asked. "Are we going to tell her about the 'other' thing?"

I turned to him, curious. "What other thing?"

Rhea waved her hand dismissively. "It's nothing, dear. Well, it is important, but with the odd day you just had, I assume that you're quite exhausted. I fear that you'll get too overwhelmed."

"I'm not that tired," I insisted. "But now that you mention it, I am feeling a little overwhelmed, and I don't think my brain can handle the overload."

Rhea laughed. "That's alright, I completely understand. We can tell you about the 'other' thing later. For now, you can go to your classes and enjoy the rest of the day. This little secret is only between us, so don't tell anyone."

I nodded. "I know. These guys already told me."

"Mother," Poseidon piped in.

His mother gazed at him. "Yes?"

"Amelia had an accident with Kristine earlier," he said. "She, um, witnessed her telepathic powers."

Her eyes narrowed. "Kristine McCarthy, the vice president of the student council?"

"Yes."

Wait. The hall monitor was the vice president?

Rhea pursed her lips. "I see. . . I'll have that taken care of soon." She looked back at me. "It was a pleasure meeting you today, dear. I'm glad that we finally found you."

She reached out a hand and I shook it firmly.

"I'll see you soon, Amelia." She winked. "I can't wait to know you more."

The rest of the day passed by like a blur. Unlike what happened the morning, everything else went on smoothly. I got to my classes like any person without some sort of powers would.

Yeah. The day was pretty normal.

During the day, I couldn't help but question if I was still unconscious from Zeus's lightning. But I slapped myself and it hurt, so I was pretty much awake, unfortunately.

Anyway, my classes were done, and I headed out to the dorms. I was standing in front of my room's door in no time. I moaned, remembering the moment I first went inside without warning.

Athena's gonna bark at me if I just barged in.

Sighing, I knocked on the door a few times.

"Who's there?" a voice behind the door asked.

"It's me, Amelia," I said. "Your roommate."

"Oh," she said. "That explains the unknown bags scattered around here. I was planning on throwing them out when you came."

I exhaled. "Yeah, yeah. Just let me in and I'll go fix them."

A few seconds passed, and the door swung open. Athena stood by with an annoyed look on her face.

"Take your bags out and find another room," she said. "I can't afford to lose my only personal space."

I groaned. "For the last time, I was assigned here, okay? I can't do anything about it!"

She put a hand on her hip. "Do I look like I care? It's your problem, not mine."

Damn this girl! She's the one who's making it into a problem!

"Well, if it's so much trouble, why don't you just ask your mom to reassign me somewhere else?" I crossed my arms. "She'll probably do that in a snap if you ask."

She gritted her teeth. "You. . . You know what? Fine!" She turned around and stomped to her bed. "J-Just get inside before I change my mind!"

"Geez." I stepped inside and shut the door behind me.
