《Kindred Spirits》Chapter 2

The pounding in Zola's ears and head is all she can hear and feel.
Well and also, Elena constant shaking of her arm.
"Zola, you need to wake up. Please. Zola wake up"
Zola opens her eyes to see Elena kneeling beside her
"Thank god, I thought they had given you too much chloroform. Do you remember anything?"
"All I can remember is me going outside and seeing you get attacked, then nothing. What happened?" Zola asks, panicking.
"The same people that kidnapped me must've seen you and what you saw, and got you too. I'm so sorry. But I did find out why we, well why I was kidnapped. They need me for some guy Elijah. They want to trade me in for their freedom"
Zola knows Elena is talking but all she can focus on is the slight heaviness laying on her heart
"Elena, I don't feel good."
"It must be from the chloroform. People react differently to it and with your heart defect, you never know what it affected. Just lay here and rest okay. We'll be fine"
Zola nods, breathing slowly, trying to ease the pain.
Zola goes to ask Elena to explain more about why they're there but two people straight into the room, panicking
Elena whispers to me that the man is Trevor and the woman is Rose.
"He's here. This was a mistake" Trevor exclaims
"I told you I would get us out of this and I will. You have to trust me" Rose says promising
"No he wants me dead Rose"
"Hey what are we" Rose grabs Trevor's hands, getting him to focus.
"We are family" Rose nods
Suddenly they all hear knocking coming from the front door. Rose leaves telling them to be quiet.
They didn't hear anything for a bit until Rose and Elijah entered the room. Upon entering the room, Elijah is hit with a certain smell that makes his inner vampire, wanting to escape. He looks around the room and sees where it is coming from. Behind the Petrova doppelganger.
He vamps speed to her and moves Elena out of the way, to see a dark haired human sitting on the couch with her head in her knees, trying to hide from the world.
Elijah kneels down in front of her
"Hello there. No need to be afraid of me Elskan, I wouldn't hurt you"
Zola peeks from in between her knees and sees a man kneeling in front of her. She stops breathing for a minute from how handsome he looks.
"My name is Elijah. What's yours"
"Zola"
Elijah chuckled "Is it just Zola or is there a last name"
Zola is beyond shocked with how nice and soft he is being with her right now. From the reaction that the other two were giving, she thought she was gonna die just because she wasn't needed here. Elena was the only one that was needed here. She was just a complication that happened.
"It's Zola Fay Saltzman" She said in a quiet voice. Elijah smiled at how quiet and timid Zola was.

"Well it's nice to finally meet you Zola, I've been waiting a long time to meet you"
Elijah reaches out to touch Zola's cheek. What shocked both of them was that Zola leaned into his touch. They were doing this and completely forgot about the other people that were in the room until Rose cleared her throat. Elijah turns a little to glare at Rose for interrupting but gets up from his kneeling position anyways.
He then acknowledges Elena, making sure she is actually Elena and not Katherina, he nods.
"Right, well we do have a long journey ahead we should be going" He says, reaching out to help Zola from the couch. He goes to step back a little but notices that Zola sways a little. He grabs her arm to keep her from falling.
"Are you okay?"
Zola goes to say she is fine but the heaviness on her chest is making it harder to breathe.
"What's wrong with her?" Elijahs asks Elena, getting upset that his elskan is having a harder time to breathe
"The chloroform must've reacted differently to her because of her heart defect she has" Elena shakily says.
"Heart defect?" Elijah questions. He listens into Zola's heart to indeed hear a murmur. "How long have you had that love?"
"Since I was born, the doctors hoped that I would've outgrow it but I never did"
Elijah nods, he makes sure I can stand by myself before he lets me go. Passing me to Elena just in case, he moves away from us
"One last piece of business and then we're done"
Elijah turns to Trevor and walks towards him "I've waited so long for this day. Im truly very sorry Elijah"
"Your apologize isn't necessary" Elijah says while circling him
"Yes it is, you trust me with Katerina and I failed you"
"Yes you are the guilty one, Rose aided you out of loyalty, now that I honor. Where was your loyalty" Elijah grits out
"I beg your forgiveness" That man shakily mutters
"So granted" Elijah pauses, he looks back at Zola and signals to her to close her eyes. Once Elijah sees her close her eyes, he reaches out and chops off Trevor's head.
Zola jumps from the gasp and thud that is echo throughout the room. She opens her eyes and sees Trevor's beheaded body on the ground. She also sees Elijah wiping his hand on his handkerchief.
Rose, out of rage and sadness, tries to jump at Elijah but he stops her "Don't Rose now that you are free" He then walks over to Elena and Zola. He holds his hand out so Zola can grab "Come"
Zola goes to grab it but Elena stops her, grabbing her hand and pulling Zola behind her.
"What about the moonstone?"
"What do you know about the moonstone?" Elijah asks her. Zola looks at Elena out of shock.
"I know that you need it and I know where it is. I can help you get it"

Zola, not wanting her to worsen things, tugs Elena's arm "Elena, stop" Elena tugs her arm away from Zola and ignores her.
"Tell me where it is," Elijah commands. Elena shakes her head "It doesn't work that way"
"Are you negotiating with me?" Elijah asks, almost laughing at the audacity Elena has.
He turns to Rose and she shrugs "It's the first I've heard of it"
Elijah moves fast, moving Zola away from next to Elena and putting her behind him. He looks Elena into the eyes and tries to compel her but sees that it doesn't work. He looks down and sees her necklace "what is this vervain doing there" He rips it off her and grabs her by the neck
"Tell me where the moonstone is"
"It's in the tomb underneath the church ruin"
"What is it doing there"
"It's with Katherina"
He goes to ask something else but then glass breaks somewhere in the house, signaling that someone else is in the house.
He turns to Rose "What is that"
"I don't know"
"Who else is in this house Rose" Elijah grits out
"I don't know" She says panicking
Elijah pushes Elena into Rose's arms and grabs Zola's hand, gently. He leads everyone into the front area where the noises came from.
Elijah starts to grow aggravated at this nonsense that is happening
"Rose"
"I don't know who it is"
Elena, knowing it's Damon and Stefan, isn't as scared as Zola is. Elena never did show her the letter Bonnie gave her.
Someone calls up the stairs and Elijah runs up there. When he turns around, he sees that the girls were moved. At this point, Elijah doesn't really care about Elena, and wants Zola back. He walks down the stairs.
"Excuse me. For whom it may concern. You're making a great mistake if you think that you can beat me. You can't. You heard that?" Elijah sarcastically says, making sure to threaten them. "So I want the girls, on the count of three or heads will roll"
Elena shows up from up the stairs "I'll go but please don't hurt my friends. They were just trying to help me out" Elena tells him.
Elijah vamp speed to her "Where's Zola?"
Meanwhile, somewhere in the house, Zola is with Rose, out of the way. She hears Elijah scream out and then a big thud, She gets scared and runs away from Rose. Running further into the house. Not focusing where she is running, she trips over some books and hits her head on the floor.
She really isn't gonna feel this time.
--------------------------------
After coming back from the dead, Elijah rips the stake in his chest out. He is beyond upset. He gets outplayed by some children and he loses his elskan because of it. He goes to leave the house but smells the most delightful thing ever.
Having a guess that it's Zola hurt somewhere, he speeds to the area and sees her on the floor, with a small puddle of blood underneath her growing slowly. He gets to her to examine her better. He kneels next to her and moves her so her back is against his chest.
Knowing she needs to heal, he bites into his wrist and puts it on her mouth so she can start drinking it. He notices that she is starting to become conscious again.
Once she notices that someone is feeling her blood, she starts to freak out. She pushes their wrist away from her and goes to frantically get up but that person grabs her around the front pulling her back.
"Elskan calm down, it's just me"
Zola automatically calms down
"Elijah?"
"Yes love, it's me. Now what happened? I came in here to see you were bleeding profusely. I had to feed you my blood"
"I had tripped over those books over there. And then I guess I fell hitting my head badly because I can't remember anything after that" Zola sheepishly says, scared he'll laugh at her.
"You have to be more careful, elskan. Now, how are you feeling? Are you able to breathe now, or is it still resisting like earlier?" He asks worried
"I'm okay, my chest does still feel heavy but I'll be ok" Zola smiles softly
Elijah nods, and stands up, taking her with him. "Come on love, let me take you home. I guess the children didn't care enough to make sure you were with them"
He leads her out the house and to his car. He opens the car door for her like a true gentleman. After making sure she was comfortable, he closes her door and gets into the car.
Zola gives Elijah her address and sighs. She starts to take her hair out of the messily high ponytail that was once sleek back beautifully.
Elijah notices this and looks at her from the corner of his eye. The beauty of this girl is just unbelievable.
After an hour or so ride, they are finally in front of the apartment building Zola currently resides in. Neither made a move to exit the car, not wanting to leave the comfort of each other.
"Elijah?"
"Hmm" Elijah nods, telling her to continue
"Earlier when you saw me, you said that you've been waiting for me for a long period of time. What did you mean by that?"
Elijah sighs. "I wish I could tell you astin min, but it wouldn't be fair at the moment. But soon, I will. I will answer any questions but I need to do something before then. Is that okay?"
Zola nods "Just don't leave me in the dark for too long. I hate it there"
Elijah softly smiles at her, reaching over to her to caress her cheek. "I won't. I give you my word"
Zola nods, grabbing his hand and leans into it more.
Knowing she should get out, she lets his hand go and exit the car.
"Bye Elijah"
"Bye Zola"
She walks into the apartment building not looking back because she knew she would want to go back and never leave. She didn't understand why she felt like that with him but she'll understand soon. He gave her his word and she is trusting him.

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!
