《Purest Black》28 - Flying With Friends

"I hate waiting!" I yelled, leaning against the portal.
Before the sun rose in Savannah, we'd left for Flora. The portal got us to our destination within ten minutes, a fraction of the time it took to get where we were. All I had to do was imagine the place I wanted to go and it took me there. That was the benefit of being the holder of the stone. The portal would only obey you while the stone being used was in your hand.
"We've been here for a whole hour," Jessica said, "you gave them a week to get here. Get used to waiting."
"But there's nothing to do!" I yelled, flapping my wings dramatically. Since we were a few hours away for any civilization I didn't really have to worry about being seen. If I was seen, it wasn't that hard to throw someone into the portal and send them off to a different continent or just kill them and save some time. Hiding the body though, that was a different story.
"How about we play a game," James suggested.
"Like what?" I asked.
"How about you take us for that flight you promised me?" Jessica asked, eyes shining brightly. "It's a good chance to use your wings and stretch then out."
"I guess," I replied. "I don't know if I can fly with anyone though, I've never tried it. You might be to heavy."
"It's worth a try," Peter said. "I mean, you never know when you may need to fly with something heavy."
"Alright," I said, smiling now, "let's try it. Jessica, I want you to stand with your hands up. Right...here."
I told her to stand in the center of the portals platform. It was elevated ground which meant that I wouldn't need to get too close to the ground. Thinking about it, I'd have to wrap my arms around her waist so holding her hands up would get them out of the way.

"The rest of you stand behind the trees."
The portal was in the center of a large clearing so the trees were a few yards away. The only problem was having enough room to rise back into the air. If worse came to worse, I'd drop Jessica on a branch and take the impact myself. I could take it, probably.
The others waited behind trees but still watched closely. Bending my knees, I jumped and flapped my midnight black, creating a gust that blew through the trees and rustled the leaves. I circled for a minute, getting my wings back into their normal habits. As soon as I felt comfortable, I pulled my wings in and dropped by the edge of the clearing. Three or four feet before I hit the ground, I opened my wings and shot forward, colliding with Jessica. The impact was bearable for us both though I heard her give out a surprised gasp.
Luckily, I could carry her with ease. Now, for getting back up in the air. My grip tightened around her waist as I prepared for an impact that never came. As though it was my second nature, my feet slammed against the ground, sending us back into the air and straight up the side of the tree. I twisted and turned, avoiding branches and unsuspecting birds. When we were in the air, I hovered a bit, giving her time to get used to the feeling. While I say hovering I mean slowly leaning backwards and letting the air catch in my wings like a glider.
"This is awesome!" She yelled, her arms death gripping my own.
"Don't talk much when I get to full speed, you'll catch bugs."
She nodded, understanding. I also took the nod as a sign that she was ready to move faster. Since I was already leaning backwards, I had to do a quick backflip before shooting up and forward.

I paced myself when going up, remembering that her lungs were more delicate than my own.
"She looks like she's having the time of her life," a familiar voice said. I turned and saw Haru looking at me. He was smiling happily, gliding upside down below us.
"Show off," I said. "How about a race?"
"Race?" Jessica asked.
"With her?" Haru asked. "You sure you can take it?" He teased.
"Bring it on! First one to that mountain wins!"
"The mountains over five miles away!" Jessica yelled. "That'll take forever!"
"Cover your eyes and think about how you breath," I told her. I'd lowered myself so that I could reach the top of the tallest tree, for Jessica's sake.
"Ready?" Haru asked. "Go!"
I flapped my wings once, taking off at a speed I didn't know I could fly at. The wind seemed to part for me and the trees passed by in blurs. I tipped around cities and avoided people. It wouldn't have mattered much, they'd think I was just a big bird at this speed, maybe even a demon flying by. They might even think they're hallucinating.
"I win!" I exclaimed eight minutes later. Haru, on the other hand was still a ways away. I flew back to him at a slower speed. "How're you doing?" I asked Jessica on the way.
"Um, a little air sick."
"You ready to land?" I asked.
"Yeah. Can you just...go at a slower speed?"
I obeyed, slowly flying her back to the portal. This ride took about twenty minutes while avoiding cities. Haru flew below me again, this time right side up.
Landing was...a process. After a few tries of gently setting her one the ground, I had half a mind to leave her on a branch and let her climb down. I found it was easier just to land normally while I was still holding onto her.
The others demanded I take them for a ride and I did. I liked flying, it was just so freeing.
When I landed for the last time, James in my arms, I didn't feel the least bit tired. Actually, I felt rejuvenated, like I could go for an endless amount of flights. Still, I sat down with the others.
"Glad to see your having fun," a familiar voice said from the bushes.
I turned to see the one winged Angel I had met a few weeks ago.
"Lucifer!" I exclaimed. Behind him was an army of Angels and Demons alike.
With pride, I found myself thinking, 'These are my people.'

Making of a Genius [A Progression LitRPG]
What does it take to climb to the top of the academic ladder? Lexus came face to face with his mediocrity the moment he arrived at Cambridge University to study computer science. There was a ceiling that he could not overcome, an intellectual world that was unreachable. But if you give a chicken an eagle's wings, it will fly higher than you could ever imagine. And that was exactly what happened to Lexus: with the help of a system, he could make it big. Schedule:1 chapter per week (every Friday evening at 5:30pm GMT). The weekly schedule is to allow time for research and factual accuracy where required. Author's Note: The story is about a computer science student at university, gradually improving and embarking on the path to become a world-renowned genius-level expert with the help of a system. There'll be a lot of studying and academics, but imagine being the best in your year. Easily. At that point, academics stops being stressful and starts being fun, doesn't it? The initial chapters are heavy on mathematical detail, but I don't expect anyone to actually read through them thoroughly. It's fine to skim them or even skip them, but I hope you try to get a sense of the progress being made, and feel happy for Lexus when something 'clicks' inside his brain :) As the story progresses, later chapters will go into less depth into individual questions, though I aim to remain consistent in terms of scientific accuracy/feasibility. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the story!
