《Purest Black》13 - For Your Safety

When I woke up, it was dark out. Something warm was wrapped around my shoulders. I didn't mind, I actually kind of liked it, which surprised me. When I turned, I saw Peter's head resting on my shoulder; I assumed that I was resting my head on his own. It was weird, for me; I usually couldn't sleep while someone was touching me, but I didn't mind Peter.

When I looked at his expression, I laughed. He was so peaceful when he slept. Unfortunately, I was still a bit you know, in pain from being stabbed. So, laughing led to coughing, coughing led to chocking, and chocking led to bleeding.

Peter's hand tightened on my shoulder as he woke up.

"You okay?"

"Yep, just dandy."

As if realizing that his hand was wrapped around me, he pulled away, mumbling a sorry under his breath.

Without his warmth, I started to feel the affects of the cold. My teeth chattered and goose bumps ran down my arms. Noticing my shivering, Peter's arm ran back around my shoulder.

"Just for tonight," he whispered.

The coldness left me and my face heated up. I think, a part of me knew, but a part of me didn't want to accept it. But, now I knew and I was pissed at the part that didn't want to accept it. I was falling in love with Peter.

I waited and listened as his breathing slowed and his head slumped back onto my shoulder. I didn't sleep the rest of the night, I just listened to Peter's breathing and let it calm me.

When morning came, Luke was the first to wake up. When he noticed us, he just gave us a sly smile. So did the others.

When Peter woke up, he looked at the others and then me. Panicked, he moved his arm. Wow, now things were going the opposite way of what I wanted, things were starting to get awkward between us.

Jessica looked at my stomach and scooted closer.

"Let me change the bandages," she said. I looked down and saw that I'd bled through them. Nodding, I moved my shirt up slightly and gave her access to the wound. Gently, she unwrapped the bandages and looked at the wound.

"I don't know how you do it, but it's almost fully healed. Just give it another day or two and you'll probably be fine."

Digging through her bag, she pulled out a roll of bandages and wrapped them around me. I pulled my shirt down and leaned back against the wall of the cart.

Letting out a sigh, I closed my eyes. Earlier, I'd felt really cold, but now I was sweating.

A cold, calloused hand rested on my forehead, and quickly retreated, disappointing me.

"You're still running a fever," Peter said. "How do you feel?"

"Well, how do I look?"

"Like shit."

"Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel."

"Zero!" Luke called. "Where's the next town?"

"A few miles up ahead," he answered.

"Get us there as fast as you can."

I knew he was smiling, Zero, that is. He was getting ready to run as fast as he could.

"Hold on!"

We shot off, leaving a trail of dust behind us. Within minutes, we we're on the outskirts of a town.

"I'll take care of her," Peter said. "The rest of you, go into town and get some supplies."

Nodding, the others jumped out of the cart. I was left alone with Peter.

Placing a hand behind my back, he moved me and laid me down. Digging through a bag he pulled out a canteen of water and lifted me up, placing the canteen to my lips.

"I can move, you know," I said. "You don't need to worry about me."

"But, unfortunately, I do."

I felt my face beat at the comment. Dammit all, I hated this falling for him thing. I mean, I've read romance books, my one vanity, but this was....AGH!

I took a sip of the water and he laid me back down.

"You can sleep, if you want."

"I think it's almost time Zero and I left."

I don't know where it came from. Truthfully, I loved it here, I felt like I belonged here. But, me staying here was nothing but trouble for them. I was always getting hurt and being a burden to them.

"Why the hell would you say anything like that?!"

I flinched, Peter had never yelled at me, well I take that back. He's never yelled at me like this. I'd really pissed him off. That was good, I guess. The angrier he was, the easier it would be for me to leave.

Calming myself, I spoke. "I've done nothing but be a burden. Every time I get hurt, I end up getting my ass dragged around by you guys, I don't wanna be a burden. And, not only that, but, because of me you guys keep getting in dangerous situations."

"We're hunters, were used to getting into dangerous situations, it's what we do. And, besides, I'd rather you get hurt with us around so we CAN take care you. Not out there where, when you get hurt you have to fend for yourself! If you were alone, none of us could go a day without thinking about if you were okay or not! I don't know what I'd do if you weren't here!"

That shut me up. I let him take care of me until the others got back, and none of us said a word.

That night, we stopped at an inn where we all shared a room. When the moon was at its highest, I woke Zero up. Leaving the extra gold from the weapons, Zero and I left.

"Do you wanna ride on my back?" He asked, quietly. He knew how much this hurt me, but he knew it was for the best. I also knew it hurt Zero, and that just hurt me more. Hells, my life really sucked, huh?

I shook my head and let silent tears fall from my eyes. I refused to be a burden to my friends and the person I love.
