《Scarlet Wolf》1- A Simple, Easy Job

I climb out of the window, jumping from the sill to the ground. It was fairly easy to find the location of my latest targets. There were no guards, and my targets, James Ashwood and Garret Hillford were both asleep, so all I had to do was slit their throats. A simple, easy job, with minimal blood. I wipe what little there is on my gloves onto my black tank top. I reach into my pocket to pull out my phone, but before I do, I hear a gasp.

Turning around, I see a girl, probably around my age, 18, staring at me with a horrified expression. "Y-y-you're the S-scarlet Wolf." She stutters. I sigh, not in the mood for a witness. I could kill her, but even with my occupation, I don't condone killing the innocent, or at least the ones innocent to the darker side of life. I decide to kidnap her. If I scare her enough, she won't snitch to the police, and I can go on with my daily life.

I start stalking towards the girl, smirking at her. In barely a whisper, I say "Yes I am. Now, what's a girl like you doing by a gang house in the middle of the night?" The girl backs up, terrified. She bumps into the alley wall, and I keep stalking towards her, and when I was close enough, I put my hand around her neck. I found the bundle of nerves around an inch above where the girl's neck meets her back. I press down until she passes out, careful not to puncture it, because that can kill a person. When the girl slumps down, unconscious, I grab her, and hoist her over my shoulder. Luckily, it's not too far to my small apartment, and this girl is pretty light.

I gently put the girl down to unlock my door, and pick her up again, placing her in a chair. I lock my door and pull out my phone. I'm a fairly good hacker, so it wasn't hard to find the phone number of Ramon Mathews, the leader of the east side gang.

The phone rings a few times, before Ramon picks up.

"Hello?"

"You know, you should really be more careful when picking up the phone, given that you're a gang leader. How'd you even become one in the first place when you seem this incompetent. Not that it matters. This is the Scarlet Wolf, if you haven't guessed. Your job is done. I expect the money and the contact information tomorrow at midnight in the same alley we met the first time. If you don't give me either part of the payment, you'll be my next target. Got that?"

"Y-yes. I'll have the information and money by tomorrow," Ramon says before hanging up the phone. Pathetic. This guys supposed to be the leader of the most powerful gang in New York, but instead he's stuttering while talking to me, a 19 year old girl.

I put the phone on the table, turning to a more pressing matter. The girl, who witnessed a murder, or at least the aftermath of one. This was a slight problem, but I could fix it.

A small whimper interrupted my thoughts. I turned around to see the girl start to move. I sat on the kitchen table in front of her, putting a smirk on my face. This was all an act, to scare her into silence. I didn't want to kill this girl, because she seemed so innocent, but I couldn't risk her going to the police. If I looked unbothered and intimidating, it'd be easier to scare her.

She opened her eyes, and looked around, terrified, before her gaze rested on me.

"So you're awake. That's good, because the two of us need to talk," I say, the smirk never leaving my face, as if I was amused at the situation.

"Y-you're the Scarlet Wolf," the girl stuttered.

"Yes. I thought we discussed this already."

"W-what do you want with m-me? A-are you going to k-kill me?"

"Thanks for bringing that up, because that's exactly what we need to talk about. You see, even as an assassin, I have morals. I don't like to kill innocents. Everyone I kill is deserving of it in some way, or I wouldn't be hired to kill them. But you, you're different. You don't know how dark the world can be, you're not a bad person. You were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't want to kill you, but you saw me kill two men. You're a witness, and witnesses are dangerous to me. So, what do I do? I don't want to kill you, but the fact that you are alive is a problem for me. What do you suggest?" The girl looks relieved for a second, and then confused.

"W-what do you mean?"

"Exactly what I said. What do you think I should do? What would you do in my position?"

"Well, I probably wouldn't be an assassin in the first place," the girl says, and I chuckle. The first sentence she says without stuttering is a joke. I like her, because she reminds me of my.. my sister.

"But, I g-guess I'd make sure I wouldn't snitch to anyone about what I saw," she continues. My smirk widens.

"Exactly. What's your name?"

"My name?"

"Yes. Your name. What is it?"

"Isa D-delinda." Somehow her name fits her. With her black hair and caramel colored skin, she just looks like an Isa to me.

"Well, Isa Delinda, now that I know your name, I can find you, if you don't keep your mouth shut. If I or anyone else hears a rumor that you went to the police, you'll be dead the next day, understand?"

"Y-yes. I understand."

"Good, now that that's out of the way, I'm sure you'd like to get home. I'll drop you off."

"N-no. You don't have to do that."

"I insist. I'm not the worst person you could have run into tonight. Like I said, I have morals. I can handle myself alone on the streets, but from what I've seen, you can't."

"R-really, you don't have-" I interrupt Isa.

"This is not up for debate. Now, if you don't tell me where you live, I'll find out myself."

"T-that's the thing. I don't have a home."

This shocked me. "No friends, no family you can stay with?" I asked, concerned.

"I have no family, according to them. My friends left me. I have no one."

I knew there was a story behind this, but Isa seemed so sad when she explained that that I didn't press her for more. I thought for a moment.

"You can stay here until you find a place of your own." I didn't know why I offered this, but something drew me to this girl.

"Y-you don't have t-to. I-I can find a hotel."

"Again, this isn't up for debate. I promise I won't kill you or hurt you in anyway, and you won't get involved in any of my business, if that's what you're worried about."

"Okay. J-just for tonight though."

"Of course. My couch has a pullout bed you can sleep on."

"T-thank you."

"You're welcome."

I had no idea why I was doing this. I was never sympathetic or kind, but here I was, inviting Isa to stay with me. I set up the couch for her, before going to my small bedroom, still thinking about my sudden change of heart, falling asleep the same way.
