- Caleb -

When I first left home I knew life would be tough.

I had dreams, aspirations...I was ambitious.

I never imagined that I would be closer to my thirties than i'd care to admit, back in the dreary little town I so desperately tried to run away from, working at the same bar that took away my father from my mother and I.

"Caleb, go and turn the sign on kid."

I turned and nodded my acknowledgment. I hadn't been back home for very long, a lot had changed in my absence...names were familiar although the faces I now looked at were purely unrecognizable.

How were these the same people from my youth?

I watched as the evening regulars flooded in and said their hellos before I handed them their usuals.

"Hey Caleb, I been meanin to tell ya...sorry to hear about your mothers passin, she was a good woman." My old highschool coach sounded as he took a small sip of the beer I had just served him.

"Thanks." I grumbled.

My mother, still fresh in the ground from her burial only a week ago...I was more than exhausted with the "sorry" "she was a good woman." "God only takes the best." Speeches, at this point it was only a constant reminder that she isn't here anymore.

She had made a promise to me and she broke it.

'I'll never leave you, I'll always be with you.'

I shook my head mindlessly as her soft voice filled my head from my childhood memory, now was neither the time or place to lose myself to my warped emotions .

The evening went by smoothly as people came and went.

I joined in on some conversations, stopped a couple of arguments and as my shift came to a close I helped Janet clean up and get the last of the stragglers out so we could finally lock up.

"See ya tomorrow kid."

I gave her a forced smile as I held my hand up in a weak attempt to be friendly and bid her goodnight.

I stood by the bar door and made sure she got into her car safely, once the older woman finally drove away I walked over to my truck and set off to the house.

As I pulled up I let out a heavy sigh, the house...my house.

I shook my head, "this shouldn't be my house."

This was the house my parents bought together, it was one of the only things that my mother ended up with after the divorce (besides myself), now it was only reminder that she is no longer here.

Every time I thought about her death I only got upset...all those calls, emails, sporadic visits...not once did she EVER mention she had fucking cancer!

I let myself in and grabbed a beer before I let my body collapse onto one of the old arm chairs in the pristine sitting room.

I sat in the silence until I lost track of time.

With my beer now gone I let out a big yawn and finally pulled myself off of the chair so I could go to bed and do this shit all over again tomorrow.

This is my life now.

Back home.

Alone.
