《The Good Girl Boxer》Chapter 23

Logan's POV

I was in the middle of hanging out with Daytona when my phone rang. The caller ID came up as 'Unknown' and that meant it could only be one person.

I cast a glance at Daytona before taking the call, wondering if she knew or not.

"What's up Cooper?" The guy on the other side of the phone took heavy, deep breaths.

"You took her to a fucking race?" Cooper raised his voice to me on the other end. I had to hold the phone away from my ear so he didn't burst my eardrums.

In a hushed voice I responded, "Yes I did. She needed it okay? She's– going through a lot right now and she needed to get away."

"Yeah but your little 'get away' has put her in more danger then you think. He knows what she looks like now, and he'll stop at nothing to make us pay." I could hear Cooper sigh on the other end.

"What did she do that he's out to get her? I mean I know what you did, but what did Day do?" I wondered the last part out loud but a little quieter.

"Hey. Only I call her Day." I rolled my eyes at his immaturity, but ended up cracking a smirk because I was the same way. "She doesn't know what she did to him, but something she did in her past set him off, and I'm assuming she hasn't opened up to you yet."

I remained silent. How could Daytona, a fun loving, badass, caring and geeky girl, get someone as bad as Colton Derry riled up enough to hunt her down?

And why hadn't she opened up to me? She knew I was always going to be there for her, so why couldn't she open up about her past? Whatever reason it was, it seemed to be pretty damn good to hold on to it for this long.

"Whatever you do Logan, keep my baby sister safe please. I'm trying my best to help Jake out, and because of that I can't be around as much as I'd like, so please, promise me you'll always be there for her."

"I promise." I was getting ready to hang up the phone when he spoke again.

"Meet me in an hour. By the old abandoned park."

"Okay." I hung up and turned the knob to Daytonas room. I opened the door and heard a thud and a groan from the other side.

She was sitting on the floor, her face contorted in pain, "I swear I wasn't listening to your conversation."

I offered her my hand and pulled her up, "I've got to go. Business calls." I gave her a solders salute and walked down the stairs.

Mason and Jake were sitting on the couch watching Happy Death Day. "Hey you two." I snuck up on them and at the sound of my voice they jumped out of their skin.

"Geez Logan. Trying to give us a heart attack?" Mason held a hand to his chest as if he was calming down his heart.

"He asked to meet us."

"When?" Mason's and Jake's face became a clean slate, wiped completely free from any previous emotion.

"An hour. By the old abandoned park." I gave them the information from my call with Cooper. "You know what this means don't you?"

Mason's eyes got darker and Jake looked down at his shaking hands in his lap, "He either has a lead," Jake's eyes stared at me with a cold, hard, deep fear, "or he has really bad news."

I saw Mason swallow and he finally spoke up, "Let's hope it's the first option."

I grabbed my keys off the counter and headed out to the car. My mind was still running over possible scenarios as to what Daytona could have possibly done to royally piss off the leader of the Loaded Guns.

Maybe she didn't do his math homework?

Then I realized that was stupid because he was five years older then us. I sighed and started the car and backed out.

50 minutes until the meeting.

~~~~~
I sat in the park watching the sun go down as I waited for Cooper to show up. The stone bench beneath me was missing a corner and the dirt path that came through the bushes was bordered by weeds and over grown grass. I checked my phone to make sure I wasn't to early and the time confirmed that Cooper was late.
Seconds later I heard a car pull up. Then another one a few more seconds later.
The first to walk through was Jake and Mason, and right behind them was Cooper.
I stood up and made my way towards him, "Why'd you want to meet? Usually you only meet if it's important."
He nodded his head, his eyes cold. "I have a lead."
Jake, who had been looking at his feet, threw his head up, "You do?"
Cooper nodded his head again, "Yes. But not with your situation. I'm still working on it though. So as you all know, Colton knows what Daytona looks like now, and he knows her name."
We nodded our heads. Due to the incident last weekend at the race, Colton knew what Daytona looked like now.
"A few days ago, he held a meeting with his men. He alerted everyone of what Day looks like and now every single one of his men, are out looking for her. They will stop at nothing to find her."
"And how is this a lead?" Mason asked. His voice was low and by the way his hair hung in his eyes, I knew he was mad at himself for not being there with Daytona.
"Give me a second will you." Cooper snapped at Mason, his eyes still just as cold as they always were. "He knows she attends CHS and that she frequents the Undergrounder, but that's as much as he knows. Meaning she needs to stay away from those places unless one of us is with her." Cooper crossed his arms and looked at us. He then sighed and ran his hands through his hair and tugged on the end the same way Daytona does.
"Keep my sister safe guys. Please. Keep her safe until I can come out from hiding." For a brief second, his eyes softened, and in that small moment, I realized just how much he loved Daytona. Well that makes two of us. But then his eyes hardened and he became the same Cooper we know.
"I promise to keep her safe, no matter what." I gave him my promise even though he doesn't know how much I mean it.
"Me too." Jake and Mason both said at the same time and for the first time ever, I saw a small smile light up Cooper's face, but after a second, a dark cloud hung over his head again.
"I'll keep in touch." Then he left.
I stayed sitting in the park until it was fully dark and it had to have been at least an hour since Mason and Jake left.
The late November wind cut through me like glass, chilling me to the bone, but I didn't mind. After awhile I got used to the wind and it's winter bite, but I had to get up eventually.
I checked the time on my phone. 10:28 was displayed against the lock screen. I hadn't even realized it had gotten that late and I sighed before sliding into my car and slamming the door close. At the same time a strong wave of anger washed over me and I was furious.
I was angry and Daytona for getting herself in this mess. I was angry at Daytona's father. At Cooper for deserting his little sister. At my parents for leaving me alone with my brother. And I was angry at Colton for targeting Daytona.
I pounded my fists against the steering wheel and yelled. Trying to collect myself, I took deep breaths and after a few, I was better. Running my hands through my hair I pulled out of my parking spot and headed home.
Seven songs had passed when I pulled up next to Tanner's Charger. I threw open the door and slammed it behind me. "I'm home!" I yelled to wherever Tanner was.
"There's half a pizza for you on the stove!" He yelled back from upstairs.
In the kitchen I grabbed the box of pizza and I grabbed a Coke from the fridge and sat down in front of the TV.
After my parents died last year, this is how my brother and I lived. Most nights, I would come home and would eat whatever leftovers my brother left out for me. Other nights, I would come home and fight with my drunk brother over whatever he felt was wrong.
But lately, he has been somewhat decent. He hasn't had any alcohol since the first night I had brought Daytona over.
In fact, everything in my life had been better, and worse, since she came into it.
She makes me feel so alive. She gives me a purpose in life. Something I haven't had in awhile, and my brother and I actually somewhat get along now. But she also stresses me out and makes me worry over her.
I found myself smiling when I realized how different my life would be without her in it. It would be so boring.
Then it hit me, I was falling hard for her.
"You okay little bro?" My brother's voice snapped me out of my trance. "You were staring at the TV, not blinking or anything. I was starting to think you were possessed."
I grabbed the remote off the couch and turned on the TV. "Yeah I'm okay. I was just lost in thought is all." I took a bite of my pizza and leaned back into the sofa.
Tanner took a seat next to me on the couch and sharked a piece of pizza from me. "So how are things with you and that girl going?"
My cheeks started to warm, but I let my voice remain free of all emotions, "Fine."
"That's good."
"I guess."
"Are you two a thing?"
"No."
"Cool."
I opened my mouth to respond when the ringing of my phone cut me off. I stood up and moved to the kitchen to take the call.
"Hey what's up Jordan?" I could barely hear what he was saying over the music blaring in the background.
"It's Him!" I couldn't make out what he said after that but I got all I needed to know.
"Where are you?" I grabbed the keys out of my pocket and headed out the door, ignoring my brother when he called out to me.
"The Undergrounder."
I cursed under my breath and made record time for backing out of the driveway. "I'm on my way. Is Daytona at home?"
Five seconds passed before he answered, "No. She's right here."
"Shit." I slammed on the gas and pushed my car to sixty as I sped down the streets. "Keep her in your sights at all times Jordan!" I hung up and threw my phone into my seat.
"Dammit!" I floored it pushing my car to sixty five.
Several minutes later I pulled up to the Undergrounder. It was way more crowded then usual and I had to shove my way just to get to the bouncer, who had no problem in stopping me. "End of the line buddy."
I pulled a fifty dollar bill out of my pocket and slapped it in his hand. "I'm here for the Demon Queen. How would she like it if I told her the bouncer wouldn't let her boyfriend through." I tried to make my voice as menacing as I could.
His eyes widened a bit and he removed the velvet rope from out infront of me. "Of course. I'm sorry I had no clue that she was dating anyone."
"Yeah well she is." I pushed past him and into the crowded club.
The smell of sweat, alcohol, and throw up hovered in the air and I held my breath for a moment so I didn't throw up.
After awhile of pushing people out of my way to find Daytona, I ended up running into the last person I wanted to see. "Oh if it isn't Logan Wylde. Daytona's little protector."
I scowled at the man standing in front of me. "What the fuck do you want Colton?"
He tipped his head to the side and mouth quirked up into a smirk, "I'm just out enjoying my evening." He played the innocent part perfectly.
"Wonderful. Then I'll be on my way." I turned to leave when he grabbed my arm.
"But, while I was enjoying my evening, a little brunette walked in with Jordan Pierce. Now if my memory serves me right, Daytona is a brunette right? 5'7, blue eyes, pretty little face, nice figure." His eyes watched me the whole time, waiting for me to crack, but I knew how to play this game too.
"Hm. I'm not sure. My memory seems to have slipped from me. To bad I couldn't have been more useful." I gave him the same innocent smile he had just given me a few seconds ago.
At my response, his mouth set into a hard line, "Well I guess my guy who's been following her will just have to ask her himself. Won't he?" His hard set mouth morphed into a sadistic smile, and I realized that in a the next moments, if I didn't answer properly, Daytona was going to get hurt.
"What do you want from her?" Is all I could think to say.
"It'll all be revealed in due time Logan. I can promise you that." He turned and started to walk off, "She has a very nice house by the way. I love the red brick, very modern." Then he disappeared.
It only took a few seconds before I sprang into action chasing after him. When I caught up to him I grabbed his by his shoulder and spun him around, "Touch her and it'll be the last thing you do."
I was seething with anger to the point I was pretty sure it was pouring out of my pores, but he kept on smiling. "I'd like to see you hold up to that Logan Wylde." He yanked his shoulder out of my grip and wandered off again.
Instead of following him and bashing his teeth in like I wanted to, I resulted in looking for Daytona instead. It didn't take me long before I heard her laugh not to far away.
I followed the sound and found Daytona and Jordan sitting at the bar talking.
While Daytona was care free, throwing her head back and laughing, not giving a care in the world about what others thought, Jordan kept his eyes out looking for anyone suspicious.
Meeting my eyes, Daytona's brightened and her light brown hair fell and covered half her face. "Logan!" She squealed and waved frantically.
"Hey Daytona." I laughed at her drunken behavior. "Jordan, do you have a second?" I nodded my head away from Daytona and he followed me.
"What is it?" His arms remained crossed and he looked either bored out of his mind, or extremely pissed off.
"He knows where she lives now."
At my news, Jordan leaned against the bar, clenching, and unclenching his jaw.
"How the fuck does he know where she lives?" He raised his voice.
"I don't know. Someone must've followed her home one day or something. The point is she's not safe at home alone anymore." I kept my gaze guarded, watching out for anyone suspicious.
"Doesn't that one dude, Mason, live with her?" Jordan asked. His arms were still crossed and he looked just as pissed as I was.
"Yeah, but he has a life too. We can't ask him to always watch Daytona. Plus, if we can't keep her on twenty-four hour surveillance. She's smart and sooner or later she'll piece it together, and I don't want her freaking out." I took a seat down at the bar and rested my head in my hands.
"Well what do you suggest we do?" I glanced at him between my fingers and shrugged my shoulders.
"Nothing for now. I need time to think about this." I watched Daytona who stood several seats down. She stared off into the distance, but the minute someone came close to her, she shot her head in their direction and clenched her fists. "She can take care of herself for the time being."
"What does that mean? You want us to leave her to her own defenses?" His eyebrow tipped up.
I nodded my head, "Yeah. We forget that she can handle her own pretty good. Plus, Colton is smart too. He knows we'll be planning for him to strike soon, so he'll wait until we think he's forgot."
"True. But–" he didn't have time to respond because all of a sudden the sound of a barstool getting knocked over and glass breaking brought our attention over to Daytona.
She held a guy face down into the bar and had his arm twisted behind his back, "I told you to leave me alone!" She yelled into his ear.
Jordan and I rushed over to her and stood by her side. She released him and he took off running through the club. She slumped over on the stool.
"What was that Day?" I placed a hand on her shoulder and she looked up at me with hard eyes.
"Nothing." She turned away and got off the stool and headed deep into the club. We followed her and when the song changed she stopped walking.
'London Bridge' by Fergie came on and she grabbed my hand pulling me deeper until we were in the middle of gyrating bodies.
When I looked at her, her eyes were soft again. They weren't the hard blue they were before. Her eyes were an electric blue that took everything in, but never revealed anything unless she wanted them too. They were entrancing, making me never want to look away.
"Are you going to dance or what?" She asked with a mischievous smirk.
"Oh. Uh yeah." I started to dance with her and by the end of the song, I had forgotten about Colton and about everything else. Right now, I was here with Daytona, and that was enough for me.
We danced to several more songs until sweat collected at the small of my back. It had to have been close to midnight, if not already pass it and I could feel drowsiness weighting down on my movements. "You are full of energy, you know that right?" I asked Daytona laughing a little.
"I know." She smiled and pulled me out of the club and into the fresh air.
Surprisingly Jordan was already standing out there waiting for us, "Are you two ready to go finally?" He asked while yawning, which then caused me to yawn.
"Yup." We all walked out to where our cars were parked. "Hey Daytona," I called out to her before she got in Jordans car. "See you tomorrow." I sent her a wink then climbed into my own car.
Hey guys! Sorry it took me so long to get this chapter out. I went back and re-read my book so I knew what the heck was going on.
Finally we have another chapter in Logan's POV.
Why do you think Logan is working with Cooper?
What did Day do?
So many questions to be answered ;)
The cover picture of this chapter is Cooper btw 😉
I hope you liked this chapter, and just and FYI, I have a Spotify playlist with all the songs I use in this book. It's titled TGGB. Very creative, I know.
Anyways I hope you guys are having an amazing day! Love you all! 😘❤
