It's a few days after the carnival. We are all playing baseball and benny is up to bat. Kenny throws the ball and benny hits it. It goes over the fence.

"Aw man. Sorry guys." He says, annoyed.

"I'll get it!" Yells smalls but nobody hears him. Everyone is too busy complaining about how they can't play anymore. Smalls starts running over to the fence. Once he gets there he starts to climb the fence. Squints notices.

"No!" Yells squints. We all start running over to him. I'm not sure why it's such a big deal but I follow anyway. They are all yelling at him. He turns around confused.

"Hey guys I'll get it!" He yells to us.

When we get to him, the boys all grab him and pull him down, away from the fence.

"You're gonna get yourself killed man" says Bertram.

"Yeah yeah truly. What are you doing?" Asks yeah-yeah.

"You guys were leaving so I thought I'd just hop the fence-"

"If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that" says squints

"You can't go back there smalls" says benny.

"Then how do we get the ball back"

"We don't" says Timmy

"We don't" repeats Tommy.

"It's history" says Timmy

"It's history" repeats Tommy, again.

"Kiss it goodbye" says Timmy.

"Kiss it-"

"Shut up Tommy" says Timmy.

"It's gone man, gone" says Bertram

"Games over, man" says benny. "We'll just get another ball tomorrow"

"Yeah. We'll never see it again" they say, starting to walk away.

"Why not" I ask. I'm just as confused as smalls.

They all turn around and say "the beast"

"What is that?" Me and smalls ask.

"Listen to me. Go over to that fence, real slow and be quiet." Benny says.

"But I-I think" smalls stutters

"No,no,no. No,no." Benny repeats. "Just go and peek through that hole."

I push smalls towards the fence. He looks at me. I gesture for him to go to the fence. He slowly walks over to the fence. He looks through. All the boys are slowly backing up. Suddenly there's a noise from over the fence and smalls runs over to the boys. I'm confused, about all of it.

"Something got the ball" smalls sounds terrified. "What was that thing" he says stammering.

The boys all look at each other I'm agreement.

"Camp out!"
