《Oh Captain My Captain! (Haikyuu)》Chapter 30

You could feel all eyes on you as you walked back towards the camp, you tried to keep your legs from noticeably shaking. You hurried into your tent and zipped it shut behind you and hurried to your bed collapsing on top of it. It wasn't long till you heard footsteps outside and Ushijima let himself into your tent, coming in and sitting beside you on the bed.
"Will you just talk to me?" he asked, a hint of annoyance in his tone. You rolled over onto your back and looked at him.
"I don't want to hurt anyone Ushi, I love having fun with you and being your friend, but I don't want a relationship with you again. If I'm being honest with myself I'm already fighting feelings for someone else..." you groaned looking up at the roof of the tent.
"None of them are worthy of you, maybe if they went to Shiratorizawa id think differently." He said sternly. You couldn't stop your eyes from rolling, he always thought anyone who didn't go to his school wasn't worthy. Granted his school was a powerhouse and he was well known for his skills, but that didn't mean others were less talented.
"You really are such a pain, you know that?" you said shaking your head.
"I just know what you deserve" he said meeting his eyes with yours.
"Yet you always put volleyball ahead of me, and I get it I really do. You have amazing talent, and I couldn't be more proud of the future you've set up for yourself. I need someone who is willing to make a future with me, not someone who expects me to be on the sidelines till their ready. I could've been your biggest support, I would've come to every game, cheered the loudest for you and helped you in any way I could. You didn't want that though, you said I would be a distraction, you only made time for me when you wanted to, and it nearly ruined our friendship being in a relationship. That's why friends with benefits is what works best for us, its both just whenever were free. There are no strings attached, I don't have to cry every time you cancel a date for extra practice or sit up waiting for you all night to call like you promised." Your voice slightly raised as you ranted at him.

Your words struck him deep, he hadn't even noticed that he had treated you that way. Volleyball had always been his focus and he did tend to put other things on the back burner, but he never thought of you that way. He sat in deep thought, thinking of the many times he had in fact cancelled last minute on you, the many times he had told you he would call but came home only to fall asleep after a hard workout.
"I'm sorry" he said quietly glancing down at his hands.
"You don't need to apologize, I forgave you a long time ago. You have been one of my closest allies and I'm so happy with what we are now. This works for us" you said motioning between the two of you. "So please stop trying to screw it up" you chuckled. He looked back at you, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"Ill stop, as long as you make me one promise" he said.
"Okay what is it?" you asked.
"If you do decide to start dating again and it doesn't workout with whoever it is" he motioned to outside the tent "promise me you will give me another chance to show you I can be a man worthy of you" his tone was sincere and made your heart flutter.
"I promise" you sat up and scooted close to him wrapping your arms around his neck.
"Can I still stay and hangout for the next few days?" he asked.
"Of course, but please don't start any trouble, and I still want you to apologize and I'll ask that Kuroo does as well" he gave you a quick nod and leaned in giving you a kiss. You crawled off the bed and onto your feet, extending him your hand "Lets go get this awkward situation over with" you said with a smile. He took your hand in his and followed you out of the tent.
Several people sat around the fire relaxing while others had grouped in tents talking. There were two empty chairs by Sugawara so you dragged Ushijima over both of you sitting down.
"Everything okay?" Suga leaned over whispering in your ear.
"Yes, sorry for the scene we caused" you said apologizing. "Have you seen Kuroo?" you asked.
"I think he is down by the water" Suga said pointing towards the lake.

"Ill be right back, can you make Ushijima feel comfortable?" Suga gave a quick nod to your question, you stood from your chair and looked down at Ushijima. "Ill be right back, get to know the guys while I'm away" you smiled and strode off towards the lake.
You found Kuroo within minutes, looking rather glum. He was deep in thought and didn't even see you sit down next to him.
"I'm sorry" you said, your voice made him jump. Once he realized it was you, he looked back out at the water, sadness still written across his face.
"Why would you be sorry?" he asked, his tone a bit angry.
"I'm just sorry because I know how you feel about me and I'm sure his actions and words probably hit a nerve." You explained.
He turned towards you "Are you going to get back with him?" he questioned.
"No, I'm not. He did ask, and we did have an argument about it though. We just work better as friends, more so than a relationship." You said, shrugging your shoulders.
"I've never heard friends make noises like that" he said turning back away from you, anger seeping back into his voice.
"I had hoped no one heard that, it was an honest lapse in judgement on my part. I need to do a better job at keeping things separate, that or just stop being such a hoe I guess" you awkwardly laughed.
"Don't say things like that" he turned to you looking rather serious "I'm just being jealous, and I need to get over it" he explained.
"I think its so sweet that you get jealous, it really makes me feel special as terrible as that is to say" you reached out, resting your hand gently against his cheek.
"I'm glad you think its sweet because it makes me feel like a crazy person. I've never been a jealous person, but I've also never been with someone as amazing as you" he placed his hand over yours, gently stroking the back with his thumb.
"I'm about to make this really awkward so I'm sorry, but I need you to come with me to speak with Ushijima. He wants to apologize for saying such careless things and I hope that you will do the same" You quickly said, scratching the back of your neck with your free hand.
He took a deep breath "Fine" he simply said.
"Okay good, come on!" you stood up pulling at his hand.
"One thing though" he said, you looked up at him and he swiftly brought his lips to yours in a sweet kiss. "Okay let's go now, I'm ready" He laughed as he followed you over towards the fire.
Suga was still talking to Ushijima but it didn't seem to be the most thrilling conversation, he really was a good guy but he was just so quiet and direct that it made it hard for him to talk normally to people.
"Hey Ushi can I borrow you for a second?" you asked walking up to him.
"Of course Honey" he said standing up, you led both him and Kuroo away from the group.
Once far enough away you stopped and looked at both of them, waiting for someone to start. "Okay now's the time, get this over with please" you laughed out. Ushijima a cleared his throat and met Kuroo's eyes.
"I'm sorry that I claimed y/n was my girlfriend and for the out of character sexual comment I made. She has informed me that she has feelings for someone, and my actions were out of line" he did a quick bow at the end of his apology.
"Feelings for someone?" Kuroo asked, flicking his eyes towards you.
"That's not what we are discussing right now, just say your apology and let's get back to the group" You waved off his question. Kuroo laughed at your slightly blushing cheeks but turned his attention back to Ushijima.
"I'm also sorry that I got defensive about you being here, I know that you are close to y/n and that made me jealous so I said things I normally wouldn't." He also bowed in return.
"Okay good, now that everyone is friends again, lets go make smores and tell ghost stories or something." You clapped your hands together in approval and marched away from the both of them. They stood there awkwardly for a second before following after you.
