《Whatever It Takes | Rosekook ✓》36: fault

It had been several hours since Officer Chanyeol disconnected his call with Roseanne Park and Jeon Jungkook. While he couldn't say Jisub was definitely guilty, there was something suspicious about the man. They were seated in Jisub's office. Chanyeol couldn't understand how the landlord in front of him hadn't gotten a complaint about the posters in his office of women in bikinis.

"Do you mind showing me your bare leg?" Chanyeol asked.

"You want to see some skin? You've got to take me to dinner at least," Jisub said.

"I'm serious. As I said, there has been accusations made against you. This is just a friendly investigation."

Jisub's eyes narrowed. "I don't have to show you a thing. Not without a warrant."

Chanyeol sighed. He was sick of these people who watched too many crime shows. They all thought you needed a warrant for anything.

"I've seen the video of you with your bruises," Chanyeol said. "I just wanted to see them again. Where were you last night between the hours of twelve midnight and three in the morning?"

"I don't remember."

"Well, jog your memory. There have been some accusations that you set the fire and stabbed that girl."

"Why would I set fire to my own building?" Jisub asked.

"Insurance money? Anger? The possibilities are endless," Chanyeol answered. "The real question is what's your alibi?"

"I was at the bar last night," Jisub finally answered. "Before you ask, I have no idea if anyone saw me."

"Which bar?"

Jisub gave him the name. "I don't think they have video cameras. I know it's Roseanne Park who's accusing me of doing this but why would I bother? If I wanted to break into her apartment, I have a master key. I wouldn't need to do anything like that."

"Where'd the bruises come from?"

Jisub sighed. "I got into an argument with some random at the bar. It started and ended quickly but he got in a good kick. Despite what you may think, I'm innocent."

"Of course. Innocent until proven guilty."

"Are you done?" Jisub asked. "Because I am."

"Is it true you threatened to kick Ms. Roseanne out of her apartment if the police showed up again? That seems pretty extreme. Why would a landlord do that? Unless you're hiding something. Are you?"

"Am I what?"

"Hiding something. You got a secret business on the side you don't want anyone to know about?"

Jisub made a growling sound from the back of his throat. "Even if I was, someone like you wouldn't be able to figure it out. I'm invincible in my world."

"In your world?"

Jisub lifted his arms around him. "This complex. This neighborhood. This city."

"No one is immune to the law."

"Your law is different than my law."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"In this neighborhood, we help one another out. I rule this place and no one...not even an underpaid cop like you can shake that. I had nothing to do with that fire and stabbing."

"I'm sure someone at the bar will be able to produce an alibi for you."

Jisub smirked. "As soon as you say my name, there will be more than one person willing to give me an alibi. Do you know why?"

"You realize you're admitting people are going to be lying for you."

"I never said that they'd be lying. I just said more than one person would be willing to stick up for me because of who I am."

"And who are you, exactly?" Chanyeol frowned. "Besides someone who seems awfully suspicious right now?"

"I told you. I run this place. What I say, goes. What does that make me, you ask? Doesn't it make me the king?"

"Hardly, but if you want to believe that, go right ahead. I know you're saying you have nothing to do with the fire or the stabbing but there's something here that doesn't quite add up," Chanyeol said. He stood up. "I'll be in touch. Be sure to return my calls."

He exited, leaving behind a furious Jisub.

"Mark, why are you back so early? It's only been 30 minutes. Aren't you supposed to be working?" Yuju asked.

"Yuju, you were stabbed. I need to make sure you're okay. It's practically my fault since it happened at my apartment."

"You're driving me crazy, Mark."

"What? I am?"

"Yes. I've told you the one you should be looking out for is Rosie. Did you see the latest video she posted?" Yuju asked.

"The one with the manicurist? Yeah. It was really good," Mark pulled up the video on his phone and began scrolling through the comments. "This video is already viral. It's on the trending page."

"It's also a Twitter moment. People are going off on Chou Tzuyu. Rosie's trending on Twitter," Yuju exclaimed.

"These are good things. Why do you want me to check on her?"

"This is all happening because of the Trinity. I'm telling you they're going to end up hurting her."

"No, they aren't. She's doing fine without me."

"Mark, you don't know this but they're not good guys. Jaehyun is really bad to women. He's always sleeping around."

"So?"

"And Eunwoo was dropped from his label after he got caught stealing from other small artists," Yuju continued. "His dad knew the lawyers boss. They paid a lot of money to keep it quiet but his dad forced him to stop making singing because of it."

"I've told you before, the biggest YouTubers who try to come across as the most family friendly are usually the biggest hypocrites."

"Okay, so you know that and you're okay with Rosie hanging out with them?"

"Rosie knows what she's doing. I haven't heard from her since yesterday. If she needed me, she'd call."

"Don't miss work because of me. You're going to have to find a new place to live. You're going to need money for that," Yuju reminded him.

Mark sighed. "So, you really don't want me to stay with you?"

"I don't mind being here for a few days..."

"I'm talking long-term, Yuju. You know I like you, right?"

She didn't immediately respond and Mark cursed. "Seriously, you're going to act like it's a surprise?"

"No, that's not it."

"Do you not like me back? I mean...we're always together."

"So are you and Rosie."

"She's like my sister and that doesn't even make sense. If I'm with you how could I possibly be with her?"

"I'm sorry. I know I've told you I didn't come here to get a boyfriend."

"Then what did you come here for? I know it's not to work at Retropolis."

"I came because of my cousin!" Yuju blurted out. "My cousin was Tzuyu. Chou Tzuyu. She made it seem like being a YouTuber here would make me rich just like her."

"What?" Mark stepped back.

"When I got here, she acted like she didn't even know me."

"You're Chou Tzuyu's cousin?" Mark asked. "Why didn't you say something?"

"What difference would it have made? Tzuyu didn't acknowledge me."

"It's called being honest. We talked about her and you never once thought to bring up the fact that you're related to her?"

"I just told you why! She refused to help me get my channel off the ground. I thought Rosie could help but she only went viral once."

"So what? You've been hiding your time?" Mark asked. "Waiting until another YouTuber came along who could help you?"

Her flushed cheeks answered his question.

"I just wanted to learn a bit," Yuju said. "As cruel as she was, Tzuyu did teach me one thing."

"Yeah?" Mark scoffed. "What was that?"

"You have to make your own opportunities."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"People want to watch stuff that's exciting but what do you do when you lead a boring life?" Yuju asked. When Mark didn't answer, she continued. "You create some drama."

"What exactly are you saying?"

Yuju shook her head. "I was wrong. I know that. I'm sorry, Mark."

"What are you talking about? Sorry for what?"

A loud bang on her door made them jump. A male voice shouted from the other side of the door. "You owe me money, girl! You said you'd pay after I helped you. I don't care if you got hurt. The cops are on my tail and you still owe me money. I know you're in there!"

"What the hell is going on?" Mark asked. He ran to the door. "You better leave before I call the police!"

"I'm so sorry, Mark," Yuju said. She began to sob.

"What the hell is happening?" Mark ran to the side of the room and began dialing emergency services.

"It's all my fault. I never should've done this to get viewers."

The pounding on the door became louder along with the threats from the man outside.

"Yuju, get away from the door!"

Three loud bangs filled the air. Mark watched as Yuju's eyes widened. Her mouth opened slightly before she fell to the ground, blood seeping into the white shirt she was wearing. Mark dropped his phone and ran towards her.

"Yuju? Yuju, open your eyes!"

He placed his fingers against her neck, checking for her pulse. He let out a sob.

Yuju, the woman he had been crushing on for months, was dead.
