Marisol's POV- August 2018

"It seems I am all out of time. Remember that you all have a midterm next week, and I expect you all to come prepared. And no, this weeks lecture will not be on the midterm, it will be on your cumulative final"

I closed my notebook and turned to Stevie who was already looking at me.

"Do you want to study together this weekend?"

"Yes," I replied.

"I'll get you a permit?"

I nodded and once my stuff was put away in my backpack I stood up. As we made our way out, I pulled my phone out of my pocket. I had my usual good morning text from Cody, and I gave him my usual reply,

To my surprise, he replied.

Which I replied,

I looked at Stevie.

"Cody wants to talk to me" I informed her.

She shrugged.

"As long as he doesn't get freaky"

"Eww," I noted.

We made our way over to my car, and as soon as we got in, my phone started vibrating. I answered the call and put the call on speaker.

"Hello," I greeted.

"Hey, Mari"

"Stevie's here too," I said.

"Hey, Stevie"

Stevie put on her seatbelt as she replied.

"Hi Cody, where are you?"

Either still in LA or in Texas.

"We're on our way to the airport"

I turned on the car.

"We're on our way to get lunch"

Stevie looked at me.

"We're eating ramen," I told her.

She grinned.

"Mari, the reason why I'm calling is that Ashli called me a bit ago to ask for your number"

Stevie raised her eyebrow.

"She wants to meet up for lunch sometime this week"

"I can't this week, I've got a midterm to study for" I stated.

He stayed quiet.

"Mari, she apologized"

Stevie rolled her eyes.

"I know she did, but you know this class is much harder than all my other ones" I answered.

"It's the class you just got out of?"

"Yes, it's on my schedule if you don't believe me" I replied.

He sighed.

"School comes first, you can have lunch with her some other time"

I could either drop the bomb now or wait a couple of days. Either way, I knew Cody was not going to be happy about it.

"I probably won't make it to any of the game this weekend" I mentioned.

The line stayed quiet.

"You can't take a break from studying?"

"My break should not be more than 3 hours long," I told him.

"So when will I see you?"

"I don't know" I admitted.

"Cause I'll be out of town from the 6th till the 16th"

"Cody you know if I could, I would go to your games," I said.

"You keep saying that, but you don't really try"

Before I could say anything, he spoke up again.

"I guess I'll see you in two weeks then. Maybe, right? Bye"

And just like that, he ended the call.

"Is this the first time he's spoken like that to you?"

I nodded.

"School comes first, that was something he agreed on when you two started dating. Also, how fucking dare he gives your number out like that? There are other ways she can reach out to you"

I sighed and leaned my head against the steering wheel.

"His sister is seeing a guy who slid into her DMs" I disclosed.

"What a hypocrite"

I sat up and put on my seatbelt.

"You and Cody met in the most fairy tale way"

We met in a coffee shop.

"Whereas his sister met her guy in the most millennial way"

True.

"You're going to do well on this midterm, we both are"

She squeezed my shoulder.

"He's being a dick, you'll have a dozen of texts from him by morning or by the time our next class ends"

"I'll see him in two weeks" I stated.

I looked at her to see she was surprised by my answer.

"So Ramen?" I said changing the subject.

"Yeah"

I enjoyed my ramen, and then I went to class. As I walked out of class, I couldn't help but check my phone. The only text I had was from my dad telling me not to grab dinner on the way home because he was cooking.

"So I was thinking, why don't you spend the weekend at my place? We've got to go to the farm on Friday anyway and we can just go over some terms and material for our other classes"

I nodded.

"Okay," I said agreeing.

"I'll get you your pass"

"I'll see you tomorrow," I told her as I waved and walked towards my car.

As I got into my car, my phone started ringing. It was Cody, and instead of taking his call, I ignored it along with the handful of calls during my drive home. The only reason why I didn't break down crying after he ended that call with me was because Stevie was with me. He had hurt my feelings, and I did expect an apology. I had accepted his bullshit apologies many times, but not this time.
