I was busy with Karen in the room, I had always wanted a mother and so naturally Karen had fill that small part of me. I was watching as she showed me each and every piece of cloths she bought for me. I still didn't know how she knew my size, but I suppose it didn't matter. I was looking at the one dress she had bought me when I heard a howl in the distance. Stiffening, I looked to the window and frowned at the memory of that dog, which I had learned was a wolf chasing me. Shivering away the thought, I turned back to the beautiful dress in my hands. Karen had such amazing taste. "This is beautiful Karen." I said quietly, holding it out so I could look at it better. I could tell it was expensive and it made me feel guilty.
"I'm happy you like it dear, next time I'd like to take you with me. Of course it'll have to be a weekend when your not in school or perhaps when you graduate." She suggested, and it reminded me that I had a week left of school before graduation.
"I'd love to take you up on that offer, but Karen you shouldn't be buying all these things for me. I really appreciate them, I do. It's just I haven't worked for any of them, and I don't deserve them." I said quickly, just wanting to get it out of the way.
"You don't have to worry about money Elehna. I want to do this, because it's what I want. And, you do deserve this. You deserve this more than anyone else." Karen said sternly hanging up the last of the cloths.
Deflated, and defeated by Karen, I smiled. "Thank you."

Karen suddenly grabbed my hand and sat me on the bed, taking a place in front of me. "So, if you don't mind me being nosy what's your father's name?"
Her sudden question had me stiffening, but then anytime my father was mentioned I reacted the same way. "Steve. It's actually Steven, but he never liked it. Not that I see a difference between the too."
Karen nodded, looking thoughtful for a moment. "Alright dear, that's all for now." Karen patted my arm and walked out of the room. Looking over at the still opened closet, I smiled. It had been so long since I'd gotten new close, I could feel excitement bubbling in my stomach. Getting up, I walked to the closet and looked through the contents. Everything was beautiful, and bright. A big change from my hoody and darker clothing, but maybe that's what I needed. A change. My cell phone beeped, and I grabbed it out of my pocket.
New Message Received
Curious, I opened the text and nearly dropped my phone.
From: Monster
You better be home tomorrow, after school. You wont like what happens if you don't.
My hands shook as I read the message over, and over again. I didn't want something to happen to them. And, now, I wasn't sure what my father was capable of. Could he hurt them? All of the brother's were in shape, but then my father was older and wasn't a slouch either. Biting my lip as my heart rate picked up, I knew in the end that none of this would work out. And, he played with my feelings knowing I didn't want other's to get hurt.
Making up my mind, I took one last look at the cloths that Karen had thoughtfully bought for me and blinked away the tears. "It was nice while it lasted." I muttered, taking a deep breath and putting on a front I left the room. I wanted to enjoy the last day of peace.

City of Captives
In the Qursan Empire, the grey walls of the City press down on its subjects. It is a highly divided society which is based on the magical strength of its citizens. While the most powerful are trained as Mages, the majority of citizens use their limited skills with Essence to power the City in their assigned jobs. Jano is pretty much the lowest of the low in the Qursan Empire. A Class Ten citizen forced into transitory work after having his power restricted. When he gets the opportunity to change all of that, he takes it with both hands. This is a slow burning progression fantasy. Please expect at least two chapters per week. I love writing this story but I do have unfortunate things to deal with like work and life outside of writing. I may be able to write and edit more than that, but it will never be less! This is largely still a draft. I hope to use any comments and reviews in the future. Thanks for reading!
