《The Side Character ☑》Chapter 12 - I wanted to hear the mosquitoes sing!

You know the thing about being silent so they wouldn't catch us?
Yeah, well that went out of the window right after five minutes.
"Gosh I'm so excited!" Alexis whisper yells at me as we tip toe behind them. Their pace is becoming faster by each minute. We have to almost run to keep up with them.
And believe me when I say this, running behind someone while hiding yourself in the shadows and trying to not make any sound so they wouldn't catch you isn't exactly a walk in the park.
Specially when the person you're doing it with is wearing 6 inch high heels which makes sounds that can wake up the whole continent.
"I never thought I'd commit a crime!" she giggles to herself.
"Shut up!" I whisper trying to keep up with their pace, "And I thought committing a crime is something Sam would be interested in. Not you!"
We quickly duck behind a bush when they suddenly come to a halt.
Peeking over it, I narrow my eyes at their direction.
"What are they doing?" Alexis asks bewildered as Ryder leans on a street lamp and Andrew stands beside him smoking a cigarette.
"Maybe they're having a secret romantic tryst?" I ask dumbly.
"Yes. Of course. Why didn't I think of that?" she rolls her eyes, "After all it is a romantic restaurant in Italy."
Scowling at her I turn my attention back. I can see that they're talking amongst themselves as their lips are moving but I can't make out the words since we're too far away.
"By the way, where do you think we are?" Alexis asks me, excitement dripping from her voice.
I roll my eyes at her, "What do I look like? The Google maps?"
"Geez, just asked a simple question!" she grumbles.
I feel bad for snapping at her when she's clearly going through a hard time and just looking for a distraction. So glancing at our surroundings one more time I reply, "I think we're in some kind of a park."
They are standing under a street lamp in a small clearing. Carefully cut out bushes surround the area. The dim street light did nothing but make the area look more creepy. I look around and sure enough a find a gate far from us.
So it is a park.
I grab Alexis' arm and point over to its direction, "Look there's the gate!"
She squints trying to figure out the words carved onto it. As its on the other side of the clearing, it's really hard to make out the words properly.
"What does it say?" she whispers.
I bite my lip, "Uh, it says The Simpsons park."
She stares at me blankly, "Its The Crimsons idiot!"
"Oh yeah!" I snap my fingers.
She shakes her head at me amused and turns her attention back to them.

Of course I saw it was called The Crimsons Park. I'm not that stupid. Then why did I make a fool out of myself you might ask? Well, it's simple. Alexis needs to cheer up. Be it by stalking my crush with me or me making a fool out of myself. I don't mind.
Because doesn't the side character in every story always make a fool out of themselves? To make the readers laugh?
I know some people would say that I have no self esteem but its not true. I just know what I am. I know I'm an awesome person but not the main attention.
Even if someone is reading my life like a story, I'll always be a side character. Just someone who'll give the readers a laugh. Not the girl who gets the guy, not the girl with whom the guy falls in love with.
Suddenly, this all seems so meaningless.
Just what am I doing? Stalking my crush at 11 pm? Seriously?
For what?
Just when I'm about to open my mouth to tell her that we should leave, she clutches onto my arm and ducks down.
"What?" I whisper yell at her.
She shushes me, "Look! There are some more people coming!"
I pipe down and slowly raise my head to see.
Sure enough, there are two guys and one girl who are sauntering over to them. They must have appeared while I was busy throwing a pity party
Ryder and Andrew seem to go rigid suddenly. They straighten their shoulders and give a nod of acknowledgement to them.
"So they were waiting for them? Maybe their just friends?"
"Sure," Alexis rolls her eyes, "Because its completely normal for friends to meet in the middle of nowhere, right? Honestly Lisa," she chuckles slightly, "What's with all of these dumb questions today?"
Oh, Alexis. Only if you knew.
I bite my lip, "God! What are they saying? I can't hear a word. We're too far!"
Alexis stays quiet for a moment, "I have an idea."
"What idea?" I look at her suspiciously.
She gives me a cheeky smirk, "You want to know what lover boy's doing, right? Leave it to me. But don't make one noise, okay?"
Before I can even nod, I'm being dragged behind her through the bushes. The leaves claw at my arms and legs, no doubt leaving marks. We crouch through the twigs and leaves till we come to a stop just behind where they are standing.
Or to be exact, just behind the bush they were standing before.
Suddenly I realize what we are doing.
Oh no.
Oh, fuck no.
But I can't even do anything to protest in case we get caught.
Well played Alexis.
I give her a WTF look and pinch her arm in payback.
She gives me a look as if to say you'll be grateful for it to me later.

I glare at her one last time before turning my attention back.
"Hey," Ryder says nodding his head at them. I can't see his expression because his back is turned to me but it can't be anything good. There's an unusual edge to his voice that I've never heard before.
A scary edge.
One of the guys is blonde whereas the other is dark haired. The girl has chocolate coloured skin paired with jet black hair.
Blonde goes to stand before him with his hands in his pocket, "So you actually showed up?"
Andrew folds his arms on his chest, "Why? Did you think we were cowards like you who shit their pants every time they got a mission?"
Mission? Um...like video game missions, right?
Dark hair takes a step towards him, "Watch your mouth whitey. Did you forgot who we are? Want to get a reminder?"
Ryder growls at them, "Shut the fuck up."
I'm so surprised I can't even blink. All this time, I thought Ryder was actually a sweet nerd who just likes to dress up like a typical bad boy.
I mean, seriously? He was astonished to see a cat!
He sneered at them, "Stop threatening my friends and tell us what you want."
Dark hair gulps as he takes a step back. Andrew puts a hand on Ryder's shoulder as if to restrain him from doing something regretful.
I'm shocked to see this side of him. This completely contradicts the sweet, kind, teasing and book lover I know.
Just who is he then? Not the shy nerd, not the bad boy, not the playboy either. I can't seem to grasp even one part of him.
"Oh! men," the girl scoffs putting a hand on her waist, "Can't live with them, can't live without them."
She takes a few steps closer to Ryder, "We're not here to bicker like children."
Blonde begins to protest but she shuts him up with one glare, "We're not."
Suddenly I develop a new found respect for her. Though being a girl, she obviously has both of the burly giants dancing on her every command.
Womankind rocks!
She turns her attention back to Ryder and smirks, "Hey there sweetheart. Long time no see."
Remember the respect? Well, please go ahead and delete that.
Ryder doesn't say anything but just looks at her.
What if he's looking at her with mesmerized eyes?
What if he's looking at her with lustful eyes?
What if he's looking at her with-
Oh shut up!
"Celia," Andrew acknowledges her, "Nice of you to remember the pleasantries this time. But please would you just get to it? We have much more important things to do."
The girl, Celia's eyes harden as she takes a step back, "Always the upfront one. Fine. You want to know why I called you?"
Both of them remain silent. I notice Ryder hasn't said one word since Celia intervened. I can't help wonder if he has feelings for her. Is that why he can't be rude to her? I can't blame him. She's beautiful.
Nothing like me.
Not getting any response she huffs, "Great. How welcoming. Actually what I'm going to tell you right now just might save your lives. So you better be grateful."
Ryder stiffens, "You mean...?"
She smirks, "Oh yes. Jay is coming for you. I told you getting him in jail wasn't going to work. He'd just bribe the judges and be out in a year no matter the charges. But who the fuck listens to my good advice?"
"Your good advice," Ryder growls at her, "Would have turned me into a murderer."
She laughs, the sound is so cruel I have a hard time keeping myself from shivering, "Oh Ryder. I forgot how funny you are. You're talking as if you aren't already one."
Everything goes silent. Even the mosquitoes that were doing a concert around us.
Andrew suddenly growls at her, "What the fuck Celia?"
An emotion akin to regret takes place in her eyes but it's gone so soon that I'm not sure if it was even there.
She backs off, "Whatever. That's it. You're welcome."
She turns back but Ryder stops her.
His voice is completely emotionless as he speaks, "What's your intention?"
She stops, "What?"
He repeats, "What's your intention of helping us? Why did you warn us? What do you want?"
Celia purses her lips and motions her head at the burly guys. They hesitate for a moment before nodding and head off.
"You know," her voice is surprisingly soft as she speaks. So soft as if it would break down any moment, "Regardless of what you believe, I did love your brother. So much."
His hand falls from her shoulder as if burnt. Masking her emotions she throws one last look at them and leaves.
Both of them stay silent for a while before Andrew decides to speak up, "You okay?"
Ryder nods slightly.
"You know," Andrew says in a jocking manner, "You should be happy she didn't try to rape you with the way she kept eyeing you-"
"Oh die you fucking mosquito!"
Both of them along with me freeze. I slowly turn my head towards Alexis wondering if what I heard was right.
She gives me a sheepish smile, "Oops?"
"What the hell?"
Realising that there's no point in hiding anymore, we slowly rise from our crouching positions.
"Um hey?" I give a timid wave.
Both of them look at us with open jaws and eyes so wide I wondered why the eyeballs hasn't fall out yet.
Ryder breaks the silence first, "Allie? What-who-how-what?"
As usual my mouth blurts out without thinking.
"I wanted to hear the mosquitoes sing!"
