《Mr. Boss | ✓》II

You throw your exhausted lifeless body onto the bed and inhale as much air as your lungs would allow before deflating like a balloon.
You know exactly what will happen next. And thanks to your overthinking brain you can't seem to fall asleep despite your drooping eyelids and aching body.
Suddenly you hear the sound of your Grandmother's stern but soothing voice sayings, "Y/N you must learn to control that wild temper of yours."
"Yes, Granny." You mutter halfheartedly.
Your eyes begin to sting at the thought of your Grandmother.. her smile.. soothing voice.. and warm embrace. You let out a guttural scream into your pillow in frustration until you're a little light headed and feel a buzz.
Buzz buzz... Buzz buzz...
You feel the bed slightly vibrate and soon realise it's your phone.
Already? Is it happening already? Repeatedly asking yourself you hold the phone up to your ear.
"Hello?" You're surprised at how nervous you sound.
"What's wrong with you?" Your whole body relaxes hearing the voice.
"Oh.. it's you."
"You sound disappointed. Ouch... I'm hurt."
"I should've known it was you. Who else is indecent enough to call in the middle of the night?"
"Ha-ha. Hilarious. We've been friends since we were kids, idiot if I can't call you in the middle of the night then who can?"
He's got a point but you won't admit it. You can never admit the other is right, it's part of being friends.
Lee Sunghyun has always been there for you. Always willing to lend you a helping hand even if it inconvenienced him. Like every other time, hearing his voice now brings you so much relief and happiness.
"How have you been, Y/N?" His voice is no longer sounds teasing.
"I'm fine. Why the sudden concern, Sunghyun-ah?" You tease trying to diffuse the tension building up.
"Y/N, you know I'm always worried for you. I hate the way you overwork yourself all the time. Which reminds me, do you work in that hell hole that pays peanuts?"

"Yah! It's not that bad. Plus, I don't think I'll be working there for long..." Saying it out loud is worse than thinking about it.
"Finally, the cogs in that rusted brain of yours have begun to work."
You sigh in response. If only, you think.
"You know my offer still stands, right?" Sunghyun tentatively asks.
"And you know my answer, Sunghyun-ah. I can't wrap my head around those celebrities. They're too full of themselves. You also know that I'm working only for the money so that I can help Granny. I don't have to enjoy the work I do."
You hear him sigh. "You're so stubborn. But remember if you ever nee-"
"'Need anything you can call me up' I know. I know." You finish his sentence for him.
"Of course," He laughs and the sound immediately makes you feel less exhausted. "Y/N I got to go, okay? Study hard at University! And try not to kill yourself working. Take care. Byeee."
You don't interrupt him or try to respond because you're used to this abrupt ending. Smiling, you lie down on your side and sleep comes easily.
You were unable to concentrate on any of your classes at university the following day because you kept imagining receiving that dreaded phone call. When nothing came you began getting ready for work.
Somehow on your way to work today every tiny detail seems to stand out.. the cobblestone streets, people hurriedly walking past you.. groups of school girls giggling but mostly your racing heart.
Wiping your sweating palms lamely against your thigh, you walk into the staff room of the café and reach for the brown apron... But it's gone.
On entering the café everything seems normal except for a girl around your age rushing around greeting, smiling and serving the customers... Just like what you did every day.
Who's she?
"Oh! Look who's decided to grace us with her presence" The sarcastic voice of your boss seems to pierce through the chatter of the café.

"Sir?.." you smile awkwardly at him.
"You. Had. The. Nerve. To. Mistreat. A. Customer!" he spits each word. "Do you even know who he was?" You didn't actually.
"Sir, I'm awfully sorry. I promise that will never happen again."
"Oh yes... It won't happen again. Because.. YOU'RE FIRED!" He erupts.
"S-sir... Please try to understand.. it was a mistake.. I really need this job" Your eyes begin to sting.
No! Don't you dare cry in front of this man! No Y/N! You rebuke yourself.
"I don't want to create a scene here. Just leave."
Hell! A little too late for that, don't you think? The little voice in your head whispers as you take in the eyes that are looking in your direction.
"What about my salary?" you ask in a small voice.
"What salary?" he says.
"It's the 20th... I've already worked for more than half this month."
"Well.. that'll go to pay for all the damage you created." He says nonchalantly giving you a look of utter superiority.
You look at his smug face in bewilderment unable to understand any of the words coming out of this mouth.
"You..." Grabbing a cup of coffee from the nearest table you chuck it right at his face. Unlike the man last night this the one in front of you now is less lucky as the coffee was steaming hot.
*****
You can't go home and be trapped with your thoughts. You need a distraction. Unlocking your phone you stare at the screen unable to think of what to do next. And then it comes to you.
Are you busy? Can we meet?
-Y/N
Meet me at the park in 10mins. :)
-Sunghyung-ah
You sit on a bench under a tree and hug your knees to your chest as the sun's warm rays kiss your skin gently. Closing your eyes you feel exhausted and defeated. That's three jobs in two months. Quite a record.
You've outdone yourself, Y/N.
Then suddenly something collides into your side shoving you right off of the bench but a strong grip on your arm grabs hold of you preventing the fall.
"Yah! What was that for!?" You scream, punching your best friend's arm.
"Aeyyy... Look at you. So weak. When was the last time you ate?" Sunghyun tosses a black plastic bag at you. On opening the bag, the smell of Kimbap wafts into the air. You look at Sunghyun with gratitude in your eyes.
"Thank you, Oppa!" You say in the cutest voice possible for you. Even though aegyo is certainly not your strong point, he flashes you a toothy grin.
You tell him everything and he listens patiently, as always. Tapping you on the back every now and then when you choke on a piece of Kimbap as a result of talking fast and eating at the same time.
Once you're done talking. Silence falls between the two of you. It's not awkward or uncomfortable but relaxing. You lean your throbbing head against his shoulder and sigh.
"Sunghyun-ah?" You say.
"Hmmm?"
"About your offer-"
"I'll pick you up tomorrow in the morning and take you to work with me. I'll speak to my seniors, I'm sure we can find you a job." He interrupts, immediately understanding where you were going and making it easy for you.
You kiss him on the cheek. His face immediately twists into an expression of disgust while he continuously wipes at his right cheek.
"It's sort of become your thing, hasn't it?" Sunghyun asks, walking you to your ratty apartment through the cold deserted street.
"What has?" You ask, confused.
"Dumping coffee on people. It's like your signature move".
You burst out laughing having realised the truth behind your friend's words. Amidst all those jokes and laughter you completely forget about the nervousness you felt previously about starting a new job.
