《1814》four

I woke up this morning in the same position that I fell asleep in, which meant that I slept well, and I haven't done that in a while. The curtains were open slightly, so a golden beam shone down on my face kissing all my features. I couldn't help but smile being so at peace with myself and everything around me, though the quiet didn't last very long as Claire came in and started opening my curtains and speaking to me really quickly.

"Morning Miss Haywood" she said standing at the foot of my bed. "Good morning Claire" I replied stretching my arms and yawning. "It seems that you've woken up slightly later than usual Miss Haywood, you're family is waiting for you downstairs to eat breakfast." She added. "I suppose I should start getting ready then" I said getting out of bed.

Claire finished my hair and I went downstairs to join the Haywoods for breakfast. Mrs Haywood was sat at the head of the table and Francis on the opposite end. Matthew and Matilda were sat next to each other on one side and there was a free sit next to Ambrose on the other which I was guessing was mine.

Ambrose stood up and pulled out my chair for me "sister you are looking lovely today as always." He said pushing me into the table. "Thank you Ambrose" I replied grabbing a piece of toast and beginning to spread some jam on it.

Francis was reading a leaflet of some sort and he had seen an article that caught his eye. "Aha! Here you go mother, the Penbrooke's are hosting a dinner today." He clearly was faking his excitement whereas Mrs Haywood's eyes lit up like fireworks at the thought of me talking to the opposite sex. "Brilliant! There you go darling." She said shifting here eye line over to me. I had to let out a very fake squeal in order to make her think I actually cared, which Ambrose caught onto so he obviously let out a snigger but covered it up as a cough. I kicked his leg under the table and he looked at me in pain. "Children please stop that" Mrs Haywood said. Ambrose and I must have some some of blood connection as both of our immediate reactions was to point at each other, we were never going to take ourselves seriously.

"Would you look at that, apparently there's a fortune teller going around." Francis also read out loud and Mrs Haywood put down her cup of tea. "Goodness, I've always despised those people, promenading around telling innocents where they are to die" she complained. "Well come on mother, I've found them quite entertaining in the past" Francis said back. Matthew and Ambrose both choked on their food from laughing, making Francis's words seem like something they were not. Francis squinted his eyes at the both of them before putting the leaflet down, "both of you need to grow up" he said before leaving. I hit Ambrose on the leg to try and stop him from laughing but him and Matthew found themselves way too funny.

I wasn't really one to believe in fortune telling or magic, until of course, I travelled through time. Maybe if I found this fortune teller she could tell me something, anything, about what happened to me and how I can get home.

I got up and ran after Francis "Francis! Francis!" I yelled down the hall. "Yes Diana" he said appearing behind me. I turned around slightly embarrassed as I'd probably woken people in the 21st century up with my shouting.

"Ahh there you are." I spoke very quietly "I was wondering where I might find the fortune teller we spoke about during breakfast" I added. "Why?" He replied clearly intrigued as to the excuse I would make up next. "For... m-my...cat.'

"Your cat?" He replied brows furrowed "we don't have a cat Diana". "I..do" I stuttered wondering where this was going. "I found a cat on the street and... I said 'that can be my cat!'" I added to my terrible lie. "Right, and why must your cat have it's fortune read Diana" he said taking his coat off to sit down as if I was telling him a story. "Well, because... he is ill and I-I would like to make sure he will be ok." I continued, hoping that this would be the last part to my lie. But Francis had clearly caught on so he decided to just play along "right then, well we can't let your cat stay sick." "No! No we cannot let that happen" I sighed. "She's based at the Northstar Inn" he resumed. I hugged him "thank you Francis!" I exclaimed.

When I had released him from my grasp he turned to leave but then turned back around "make sure to tell me if you're 'cat' recovers" he smirked. "Why of course, you helped save his life" I giggled before turning away and leaving myself.

I needed to bring someone with me that I know I could bribe not to tell anyone. Easily Ambrose. I walked up to his room and knocked on his door. "Come in" he exclaimed from the other side of the door. I went in on him with a canvas and and paintbrush. It looked like he had a few objects such as a violin an apple and hat set up for some still life. I walked behind him to look at how the picture looked so far. "This is amazing Ambrose" i cheered resting my hands on his shoulders. "Thank you Di, but I'm not sure about it myself." He disagreed.

"What can I do for you anyway sister?" He asked. "Would you be the best brother in the world and accompany me to the Northstar Inn?" I questioned resting my chin on the top of his head. "What business does my little sister have at the Northstar inn?" He asked again looking up at me. "Fortune teller business" I replied. "Francis got into you head did he?" He asked yet again. "I have not had one straight answer from you, all questions. Will you go with me or not?" I replied. "Of course, but don't tell mother" he begged continuing with his work again. "We leave in a quarter of an hour Ambrose" I grinned leaving the room.

Once we got there Ambrose helped me out the carriage, it was clearly the less fortunate side of Kent. No silk dresses or perfectly cut hedges, everyone seemed miserable actually. "Are you sure you want to go in?" He asked putting his arm out for me to hold. "Why wouldn't I?" I replied. "Well, because your a wealthy Haywood and we're dressed like this." He explained. I held his arm a little tighter but led the way in anyway.

Inside, men were sat on wooden tables singing and drinking ale while women refilled their cups. One woman even approached Ambrose and asked him if he wanted company, I'm sure we all know what she meant by that. He obviously said no. But I did try and catch her up leaving Ambrose behind to ask her where I might find the fortune teller. "She's upstairs, but it'll be 10 shillings to see her." She said in her cockney accent holding out her hand. "10?!" I repeated. She shook her hand as if to say 'yes you idiot 10 shillings' so I gave her the money and went upstairs.

The room was filled with incense and lavender was hung from the ceiling. It was slightly foggy so it took me a while before I could see her behind a table with a velvety purple tablecloth. She seemed to be looking at some cards before noticed that I'd come in.

"Miss Haywood, to what do I owe the pleasure." She announced not having looked at me once since my arrival. "How do you know my name?"I questioned slightly concerned. "Your family are known for your handsome faces, you and your siblings all look the same." She replied still turning cards over. "I need you to tell me something." I stated. She paused, thinking about what I had said "Well is there anything in particular I can help you with, perhaps how many children you will have?" She suggested. "No, no nothing like that. Maybe just read my palm and tell me what you see." I replied.

I sat down opposite her and took of my white silk glove, laying the palm of my hand face up in front of her. She sandwiched my hand between to of hers and started mumbling things to herself that I couldn't quite make out. Her head shot up in a slightly demonic way and it seemed she was struggling to breathe. Suddenly she came out of her trance and quickly let go of my hand. "What did you see?" I urged with agitation. "I saw... many, many things Diana. I'm not sure I can tell you exactly, my visions refrain from giving detail but I–" she gulped releasing my hand from hers. "Please tell me." I begged.

Worry was reflected in her eyes as she looked at me, she took a deep breath and held my hand again but more for comfort this time. "You feel displaced, and you're far from what you feel is 'home'. You clearly seek answers, but the only answer you need is reason and will." Her grip on my hand tightened. "Diana if you really wish to go back for this place, you must be careful for things will distract you." She added. "What do you mean distract me? Nothing will stop me from wanting to go home." I stated. "You will fall in love, Diana, during the last dance." I was shocked at her accusations yet I knew that she couldn't have been making it up. "And you will finally feel loved by the people who surround you eventually." She smiled. As scared and angry as I was at her, the thought of being fulfilled and loving someone got me... excited?

"What did you mean by reason and will? Do I need to have a reason to go home?" I questioned.
