《Badass Luna》Chapter 5

Oh my god, I'm totally in love with Ryan Barnes. That one date changed everything. He's so sweet, and kind and hot and-
Hahahahah, I'm totally kidding. Ryan Barnes is a self centered cocky ass man trained to get into women's pants.
That's the conclusion I got out of the other night. The minute I visualized Robert run out on me, I knew something most certainly happened during the time he left for the bathroom. I would have thought that he found out that I was a cop, until I was face to face with the one and only Ryan Barnes.
I was here with my friends. They left. Yeah, as if I was going to buy the oldest trick in the book. This is the part where you would wonder: why did you have a drink with him if you knew? Well this is my question to you, why not? If two guys chase you at a club, then precisely choose you for a suspicious missing person's case and then crash your date by scaring away your date, wouldn't you sit down with this person? I mean, alcohol is the best way to extract information from people, if you ask me. FBI should try it someday.
7 tequila shots, 5 beers and 3 glasses of wine later, Ryan Barnes mouth was as sealed as Michael Amar from Arrow. All he did was talk about me! My favourite color, my favourite movie, my favourite bla bla bla. I'm sure he was one question away from asking me my favourite sex position! Everytime I tried to peer even the slightest into his life, he would say 'We're here for you, not me' and shut me out. Now, I would have dug deeper if only he would stop asking me questions! By the end of the night he drove me back home, and I left without a single word being said.

The only question that remained now was: Why was he so interested in me? Why doesn't he open up? WHY DOESN'T ALCOHOL AFFECT HIM IN ANY WAY?
I sighed, derailing from my frustrating train of thoughts.
"I don't understand you, why do you have this strong hatred towards these people? What did they ever do to you?" Emilia questioned, folding her arms in front of her.
"I don't hate them, I just...dislike them"
"Why?"
"They're just... sketchy" she raised her eye brown in total confusion, making me feel even worse about myself.
Was she right? Was I looking too much into things? I buried my head into the nest of my hands, before a voice woke me up.
"Elisabeth, Emilia, my office now" the captain yelled, walking ahead towards his office. Emilia and I sprang up, following behind him, closing the door to his office once we entered.
"Yes captain"
"What do you have on the missing person's case? What's his name again, Elver Brewster?"
"Elvis Brewster, captain" Emilia obediently replied. "We've talked to everyone close to him, his friends, family, wife, employer, but they all seem to have no idea why or how he would just disappear like that? We feel like Elvis Brewster might have been involved in something his family new nothing about-"
"We want a warrant" I interrupted Em, earning a glare from her.
"A warrant?" my captain repeated.
"Yes, a warrant to search Ryan Barnes' residence" I stated earning a frustrating sigh from my partner.
"And why exactly do you want that?"
"We believe there might be something Mr. Brewster's friends might not be telling us and the best way to find out is his house" My captain chuckled, elevating from his seat.
"Ms Walker, let me make this clear for you. Any personal vendetta you might have against Mr. Barnes is not reason enough to get you a warrant. You should know this. I want your next leads on him by Friday morning on my table, you better have something good. "He completed, dismissing us.

"I don't what it is that's going on, but this needs to stop El, you've got to put your personal feelings aside for this case and start thinking professionally. Tomorrow morning we are going back to his work place and we are looking for answers" Emilia snapped at me before grabbing her coat from the chair and evaporating out of the precinct. A spark of guilt penetrated me, but I brushed it off, knowing what I was getting myself into.
Mirroring her actions, I grabbed my coat, making my way out of the precinct home.
By the time I reached home, I munched on the leftover pieces of pizza and washed the dishes, sitting down with a hot mug of tea on the sofa. The TV was playing and my eyes were focused on it, but my thoughts gripped on to the hunch that haunted my brain.
The sound of the doorbell had my brown knotting in confusion. I walked towards the front door, gun in hand as I placed the mug of tea on the entrance table.
To my uttermost surprise, the person at the door was someone I was not yet was expecting.
"Ryan, of course" I whispered, placing my gun down, turning the safety on.
"Hey, sorry to drop by so late. Can I come in?" I stood firmly by the door, not letting him in.
"What do you want Mr. Barnes?" I spoke as professionally as I could. He knotted his fingers through his hair, probably looking for an excuse.
"Yesturday-"
"Don't read too much into things Mr. Barnes. The only relationship we maintain is a professional one and one night out doesn't change that. If you want to talk business with me then you may visit me at the precinct when I'm working. If it's nothing to do with the case then do not talk to me, I am not your friend, just the detective working on your missing best friends case, that's all." I replied harshly. Guilt was something that definitely did not take over this time since I knew my place, but clearly he didn't know his. He seemed hurt, but that was beyond my reach at the moment. I watched him nod his head and reluctantly make his way from my front porch.
I closed the door, returning to my couch with my tea.
What the hell have I gotten myself into?

The year is 2152. Rune Yahui is a nineteen-year-old failure, not having gained entrance to college or the military, with no significant prospects in life. Even worse, Rune is the poorest of the poor, hailing from the mega-slums of New Southern Chicago, the lowest pit of America. In a desperate last-ditch attempt to gain a future more lustrous than toiling the rest of his days away in abhorrent conditions in one of the near sweat-shop level factories that dot the megapolis, Rune signs up for the Virtual Citizen program, a program to cull the excessive world population by transferring just their brains into a video game. In a stroke of rare luck, Rune is admitted into the program and happily submits himself to the surgery and digitization process. Unfortunately for him, he wakes up several hundred years later than he expected... or does he? **Author's Note** This isn't a type of story typical to RRL. You may have noticed LitRPG in the tags, but it's a relatively minor element in the story until later. You may also notice Slice of Life is in the tags. This story is going to be slow and there won't be any power tripping until way later if at all. The focus will be on character development. That doesn't mean I won't still have action/excitement, however. I encourage you to give the story a try. Maybe it will be your thing, maybe it won't. Thanks for even taking the time to read this, and if you do give my fiction a try, I hope you enjoy it. If you don't, well, I hope you find something that you do enjoy. Happy reading!
