《Cupid Falling》Chapter 25: Pizza Night

"That must be the pizza!" I tell an uninterested Steve as a knock sounds on the door.
It's Friday night and I've finished a long work week. If anyone deserves pizza, it's me. Pizza. A glass of wine. Maybe a terrible movie. I try not to think about who else enjoyed that combination. Steve will keep me company. I glance at the feline where he's sleeping on top of the couch. Sort of. It's better than no company, I suppose.
Wrenching the door open, the pleasant smile reserved for the pizza delivery person freezes on my face when I come face to face with Eros. Without thinking, I slam the door shut again. I turn my head to stare at Steve, who's sat up, roused by the racket.
"What's he doing here?" I ask the cat, as panic is bubbling inside me. "Is he going to yell at me for not dating Trevor?"
I peer out of the peephole on my door. I can't see any horns, so at least I haven't caused a demotion. Even seeing him through the slightly distorted lens of the peephole is painful. What does he want?
"Penelope?" His voice is muffled on the other side of the door. I wish I looked sexy and composed. Like you want to when running into an ex. You want to look like you don't miss them at all and that you're doing great. Instead, I'm newly showered, hair still damp in a braid down my back, and wearing faded pajama shorts and a tank top to keep me cool in the summer heat. It might keep me cool, but I certainly don't look cool.
I close my eyes for a second before opening the door again. He's still standing in the middle of the hallway, halfway between our doors. If that's even still his door. No one else has moved in since he left, but that could be a coincidence. For a moment we just stare at each other, taking the other in. Five months have done nothing to dull my attraction to him. He's still the sexiest man I've ever seen. Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, he looks relaxed and comfortable, but his blond hair is a little messy, like he's run his hand through it a time too many. Maybe he's nervous too?

"What are you doing here?" I finally ask when he's said nothing.
His eyes snap up to mine, and he gives me a crooked smile. "Sorry, I got distracted. It's so good to see you again."
You too. I keep my mouth shut. He left me. Not only that, he specifically left me so I would date another man. I don't care if he's a Cupid. That's just bad form.
"Why are you here?" I ask again.
His gaze flickers as he runs his hand through his hair. Maybe he really is here to check on how his matchmaking is coming along. He won't be happy to know that Trevor recently got engaged to a lovely woman from his firm.
"Can I come in?" he asks.
I hesitate for a moment before nodding. Taking a step back, I open the door wide to allow him entry before closing it behind him. He walks into the living room, and as he's standing there taking everything in, seeing the minor changes I've made since he was last here, I realize he really is as nervous as I am. It makes me feel a little better.
"If you've come to tell me to be with Trevor, I—"
"No," he cuts me off, turning towards me. "No, that's not why I'm here."
"Then why?"
Another moment's silence as he watches me. "I... I miss you."
Crossing my arms over my chest, I resist returning the sentiment. "Shouldn't have left then."
"You're right."
I wasn't expecting him to agree. My arms relax and fall to my sides. "But you did."
He nods. "I had to. There are rules about what Cupids are allowed to do."
"Then why are you here now? I don't see any horns, and I'm not with Trevor."
"Good." The emphatic utterance surprises me.
"Good?" My eyebrows knot. "That's not what it sounded like before."
"I was an idiot."
"I don't disagree."
A smile tugs at the corners of his mouth before he continues. "I was blind, too intent on making my match to see what was right in front of me."
I try to ignore the initial bubbling of hope in my stomach. He might not be going where I hope he is. "Yes?" I prompt him when he hesitates.

He takes the steps separating us and clasps my hands in his, bringing them to his mouth to place a soft kiss on the inside of my wrist. I hope he can't feel the rapid beat of my pulse.
"You." His intensely blue eyes meet mine. "You were right in front of me."
"I'm right in front of you now as well," I point out, making the corners of his mouth twitch again.
"Penelope," he says softly. "I love you."
I suck in a breath, shocked that he actually said the words. "What about..." I make a vague nod towards him since he's still holding onto my hands. "All the... not being mortal, and all?"
His smile blooms, but he actually looks a little shy as he runs a hand through his hair again. "Well, I... I gave it up. They gave me the option to be mortal, and I took it."
Fighting past the lump in my throat, I say, "For me? Why would you do that? It seems like a terrible deal."
"I would do anything for you." He squeezes my hands a little. "But if you don't feel the same, that's okay. I will return to being a Cupid once my mortal life passes."
"Oh, that makes me feel a little better." I make a wry face. "I'd hate to think you gave up on immortality just to be with me."
"Forever felt pointless without you," he admits. Placing another kiss, this time on my knuckles, he watches me. "Can I interest you in a date with another human?"
A joyful laugh finds its way out of me. "I think we're beyond that. You did just suspend your immortality for me. But I have a pizza coming. If you're nice, I might be convinced to share it with you, and you know how serious I am about my pizza."
He grins before finally leaning down to kiss me, and I wrap my arms around his neck. "Sharing your pizza with me is the best thing I could have hoped for," he mumbles against my lips.
"It's how you know I love you."
Pulling back, his eyes widen before his grin grows even wider. "You love me?"
I roll my eyes. "Of course I do. How could I ever resist a veritable god of love?"
"Surprisingly well." He chuckles. "You're still the only mortal I've met who could resist Andris."
Leaning up on my tiptoes, I kiss him again. "I could never resist you."
"I can live with that." His lips travel along my neck, sending shivers through me. "Apparently I could never resist you, either. I'd say that's an excellent match."
"The best," I murmur as he nips at the sensitive spot where my neck meets my shoulder. "What are you going to do now that you're mortal? Will you work at OkCupid?"
He laughs against my skin, the warm sound reverberating through me. "That's an idea, but we'll see. For now, I just want to be here, loving you. I'm in a position where I can take my time getting a job, or never get a job."
"What do you mean?" I'm not sure I care as his hands and mouth are doing deliciously wicked things to me.
"Apparently I'm what you humans call a millionaire."
"Of course you are."
He lifts his head to look down at me, looking amused at my glib comment. "No, I am," he says. "I won the lottery when I first came down here. It's how I could afford the apartment, food, and everything."
I can't help but laugh. "So you're handsome and rich. No wonder us humans never stood a chance."
The doorbell rings just as I'm about to kiss him again, and I bounce over to the door. My steps feel light while my heart feels full. I'm so weirdly happy it's almost frightening. But really, I'm just happy. Paying for the pizza, I bring it back to the living room, where Eros is petting Steve. I swear I can hear him saying something about how he hopes the cat isn't spying on us, but I'm too hungry to question it. I might ask him about it later. After pizza and—I give the sexy man on my couch an appreciative look—other things.
He turns his head and smiles as he sees me, his whole face lighting up. Butterflies are fluttering in my stomach again, and I suspect that will be a common occurrence from now on. It's like tiny wings of happiness are soaring through me. I never thought it was possible to be this happy, but I guess when you're in love, anything is possible.

Grimm Season 6 Episode 14: In the Nick of Time
After multiple young women disappear in the woods, Nick and the rest of the gang are called to investigate. Meanwhile, Deputy Farris relies on Hank for answers when the kidnapping suspect claims that monsters took his fiance. Elsewhere, Nick has a surprise for Adalind when she arrives at the loft, and Josh contacts his friends from Portland. This story is a season 6 episode 14 fanfiction of the hit NBC show Grimm and, therefore, takes place soon after season 6, episode 13. In this story, we get to see the immediate aftermath of the Grimm finale, see some familiar faces, and answer a few questions that were left up in the air with Grimm's end. This tale is based on the Brother's Grimm fairy tale, Jorinda and Joringel (though I recommend reading the real fairy tale after finishing the book). I do not own Grimm or any of the characters. I wrote this story out of respect and longing for my favorite show that has ended. This story contains violence and mild language.
