《Cupid Falling》Chapter 20: Friendly Meeting

I'm careful not to step on the bunnies as I walk across the floor to put my bags down on Eros's couch. It's crazy how much stuff is needed for a wedding. I've picked up Amy's veil, something blue, and an entire set of little trinkets for the other bridesmaids that Amy wants to give them. Turning back to Eros, I smile as I watch him close the door. He's still wearing the same clothes as the night before. At least his walk of shame was only a few steps across the hallway.

Taking my jacket off, I put it on top of the shopping bags before walking over to him and getting up on my tiptoes so I can reach to give him a kiss. My skin is chilled from the cold winter air, making his lips feel extra warm against mine. I'm just about to slide my arms around his neck when I hear a discreet cough from the kitchen. Eros's friend from the hallway last night is sitting at the table, watching us with an amused smile as he's eating a piece of bacon.

"We were just about to have lunch," Eros says, placing a kiss on my temple. "Want to join us?"

I nod and walk over to his friend. "Hi," I say, holding out my hand. "I'm sorry we didn't get to meet properly yesterday. I'm Penelope."

He takes my hand in his and smiles. Maybe it's because I'm cold from being outside, but his hand feels as warm as Eros's always does. "Andris. Nice to finally meet you."

My assessment of this man as a dark angel is not far off. He's at least as handsome as Eros. While looking a little worse for wear after what I assume was a wild night out, with his black clothes a little wrinkled and his dark curls standing slightly on end, he's incredibly good-looking. Feeling a little outclassed in the presence of these two gods, I push a lock of hair behind my ear.

Eros has moved into the kitchen and is preparing another plate for me. Am I imagining things, or is he watching me gawking at his friend? I wish I wasn't, but it's hard not to. I glance at Eros, now busying himself with spreading butter on a slice of toast. He's not jealous, is he? It's hard to imagine, but the way he keeps looking over at us suggests he might be. I smile inwardly. His friend might be extremely handsome, but other than appreciating his looks, I have no interest.

"Finally?" I sit down on a chair and steal a slice of cucumber off Eros's plate. "He's mentioned me?"

A flicker of amusement makes Andris's eyes glitter. "Once or twice."

"Would you like a coffee?" Eros asks with a warning look at his friend.

I shake my head. "No, thank you. I've had enough coffee today. Just some water, please." I turn back to his friend. "So, are you from around here?"

"No, I'm only visiting. We used to be roommates."

"Oh, where do you live?" I steal another cucumber.

He looks bewildered by my question, but I don't know why. It's a fairly standard one as far as questions go. "Uh. Up north."

"You're about as forthcoming as Eros." I smile, both amused and frustrated. If I had any complaints about Eros, it would probably be how tight-lipped he is about his past. Or even his present.

"Sorry." Andris flashes me a charming smile. "It's all very boring."

"Are you a contractor too?"

"Uh." He looks over at Eros before turning back to me and nodding. "Sure."

Eros returns to the table and puts a plate before me before sitting down. Looking down at his plate, he frowns. "Where did all my cucumbers go?"

With a sheepish grin, I wave his last slice in front of him before I pop it into my mouth.

"I see." He eyes my plate for a moment before he snatches one of my cucumbers off it. I gasp and steal it out of his hand before he can eat it. My victorious whoop dies in my throat as he leans forward and catches it with his mouth, his hot lips lingering on my fingers a moment longer than necessary, his gaze locked with mine.

Andris groans. "Get a room."

Eros straightens and gives his friend a pointed look. "I have an entire apartment, but someone invited themselves."

His friend laughs and holds his hands up in surrender. "Point taken!"

"So what brings you down here, Andris?" I ask as I get started on my lunch. I'm famished, having only had coffee all day.

"I... Eh, I'm helping Eros with a project."

"Oh, that's cool. I might see more of you then."

He smiles. "You might."

I turn back to Eros, only to discover that he's been watching our interaction again. Maybe he really is jealous. I wonder if there have been women in the past who abandoned him for his handsome friend, because he's watching me like he's expecting me to fall at his friend's feet and declare my undying love at any moment.

Unable to stop myself, I smile broadly at Andris, who looks a little taken aback by my beaming. "I'd love to see more of you," I say, trying to not be too obvious about checking Eros's reaction, but when his face falls I feel bad. My joke doesn't seem as funny anymore.

As if he can sense the awkwardness, Andris stands up. "I'll borrow your shower," he says and disappears before either of us can respond.

Eros is staring into his plate with his eyebrows knotted, so I put my hand over his resting on the table to catch his attention. Raising his head, his eyes meet mine.

"I'm sorry," I say. "I'm not interested in your friend. That was a terrible joke."

When he's only staring at me as if I've grown horns, I feel even worse. I didn't realize this was such a sore spot for him.

"You're not attracted to him?" he asks, his voice skeptical.

I shake my head. "No. I mean, yes, he's handsome. I'm not blind. But I'm with you, and I don't want anyone else."

Shit! That was maybe a little too forward. If he noticed, he says nothing, still caught up on the previous topic. Which is a relief. I don't want to seem too keen. As much as I'm finding myself enjoying his company lately, we've only been dating three weeks, and he's admitted to being a bit of a commitment-phobe, never having had a girlfriend before. I don't even know if I'm his girlfriend. We haven't exactly put labels on this thing. I try to rein in my scattered thoughts. Now is not the time to obsess about the definition of our relationship.

Eros turns my hand over in his, caressing my palm with his thumb, leaving my skin tingling. When he brings it up to his lips to replace his thumb with a kiss, I suck in a breath.

"I'm surprised," he admits. "Andris is usually... Irresistible."

I smile shyly. "I find you pretty irresistible."

He glances towards the bathroom before pushing his chair back and tugging gently on my hand until I'm on his lap, straddling his hips. A moment later his mouth captures mine in a searing kiss, instantly reminding me of all the deliciously wicked things we did last night. Things I'd love to do again. The sooner the better.

"When is Andris leaving?" I ask breathlessly as Eros trails light kisses down my neck.

"Immediately after that shower."

"Is he really?"

"I don't know. I'll make him."

I laugh and take his head between my hands, tilting his face to look at me. "Don't kick your friend out on my behalf. You know, we have another apartment just a few steps across the hallway."

"You're kinder than I am," he mutters. "Let's go."

"Now?" I ask as he gently lifts me off his lap and stands up.

"Now."

I giggle as I hurry across the hallway, with Eros chasing me, his hands roaming over my body. I can't believe how happy I am right now. Bringing him to the wedding next weekend worried me when Amy first force-invited him, but now I'm looking forward to it. For once, I won't be attending a social function alone. Not only that, I'll be attending it with a man that's swept into my life and captured my heart quicker than I thought possible.

Faltering for a moment, I stare at Steve lying on the couch watching us enter. I'm not in love already, am I? It's so soon. If the cat senses my rioting thoughts, he doesn't care, he's not even bothering to move from his spot. I hear Eros locking the door before he comes up behind me, sliding his arms around my waist and burying his head against my neck, placing fervent kisses on my sensitive skin.

I lean back against him, enjoying the heat he always exudes. It doesn't matter if I love him already. Right now, this is all I want. There's time to figure everything else out later.
