《Slow Poison》CHAPTER 13

I take a look at the series of weapons that rest in front of me on the table. These are from the fresh arrival that we got two days back. Yesterday I got a call from Richard telling me to inspect the stock that has arrived. He even suggested that If I like any of them, then I can keep it. Hence, I find myself here examining the guns at the storehouse of a deserted tyre factory. I look around for a while, the sight of the storehouse is really hideous. Stale smoky air dangles in the room, along with the smell of drab abraded leather of the discarded tyres that lie at random spots on the ground. Don't ask me how do we always get some shady place to carry out our work. After all, we belong to the Mafia community, we are experts in such things. You can give that much credit to us. While talking to Richard on phone, I figured out that Sophia didn't tell him about our conversation. She proved to be the bitch I thought she was, making me hate her even more now.
My eyes fall on a steely black pistol as I look at the guns, I begin to admire its beauty taking it in my hand. A chill runs through my body as I trail my fingers over its metallic body and then grip my hand around the trigger. It fits perfectly in my hand. I develop an instant liking for the gun as soon as I curl my fingers around it. I know this is going to be my sweetheart for sure.
When I came here, I got a call from Max saying that he wanted to discuss something with me. I guess it is related to the cocaine consignment that we are going to receive in a little while. I don't know why Max becomes all jumpy whenever we have to work on a deal.
I again look at the gun in my hand and aim it at the wall opposite to me. Suddenly the door behind me bursts open, grabbing my attention. I turn around to see max entering the room along with a man, gripping the back of his collar tightly. Josh comes into view, closely following them and stands beside Max. I take in the appearance of the stranger. His hands are tied behind his back. his shirt appears torn, and his face looks badly bruised. He has a cut over his left eyebrow from which blood is flowing profusely. From merely looking at him, I get the idea that he has been brutally beaten up by these two men.
As Max pushes him forward, he stumbles on his steps and falls on his knees in front of me.
He glances at me and I get acquainted with the fear that brims in his eyes. He looks at me pleadingly.
"Please leave me, I have nothing to do with this," he begs in a tired voice.
Max scoffs at the man's statement. "He was trying to run from our hold without getting the job done."
I look at him for a bit and then try to understand what Max is saying " Is he the checking clerk at the wharf?"
Max nods in response. Before I can say anything, the man continues "Please, I can't do this...I can't approve of your goods. This...this is a crime." He tells desperately in a pained voice.
Max groans in frustration "You don't have to do anything. Just state in your report that our ship contains engines and auto parts. that simple it is." He looks at me for a moment "Apart from that, you aren't doing this for free. We assure you that you will be handsomely paid for it." he tells agitatedly. I nod in agreement telling the man that what max has just said is completely true.

Then I look around to see where Josh is and find him leisurely strolling. He doesn't seem bothered by any of the things happening as he walks towards the table where the guns are laid out.
"What if....the chief officer gets to know about it. He would kill me. if not that, he will inform the police." The man says diverting my attention back to him. "I have a family back at home. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in prison." tears begin to flow out of his eyes as he says that. Max doesn't seem even a bit affected by his words.
In fact, he loses his patience by now and begins to pace in front of the man angrily. I roll my eyes watching him do that. He is such a drama queen. He then stops abruptly and takes out the gun from the back of his pants. He points it at the man's temple. I see him shiver with fear as soon as the cold metal makes contact with his head. His lips tremble as he closes his eyes sensing it to be his last moment before death.
"I don't know about him, but I surely am going to fucking kill you," Max says with gritted teeth.
I shake my head in disapproval. Okay, now this is going beyond the limit. I need to interrupt before Max does something really stupid.
"Max, stop!" I command with authority.
He turns around on hearing me and gives a confused look. Thank goodness he understood it the first time itself otherwise I don't know what would I have used to stop him. I know how stubborn Max can get. Such an idiotic friend I have.
I signal him to leave the man, he looks astonished by my interference, but he still moves away from him. I saunter towards him and stand in front of the man who is still on the ground.
"You said that you have a family." I look at his tired brown eyes. "You must be having kids then?" I ask him casually.
He frantically nods his head. by hearing the response that I wanted, a devilish smirk appears on my face.
"Then you must be cognizant of the fact that it wouldn't take us long to get hold of them." I threaten him.
His eyes instantly shoot back to mine as he looks at me with horror.
"NO...no please don't drag them in this. I'll do what...whatever you will say." He says stammering in panic.
Smirking at my little victory, I say "You seem clever enough to understand what we are capable of."
I walk back to the table where Josh is standing and lean against it. Folding my arms I instruct "The only job that you have to do is declare in your report that our boat contains electronic parts and engines." I shrug and look at Max who is still looking at me with a scowl on his face. "Some of my men will be working under you, so you don't have to worry about unloading. they will take care of it and they wouldn't even let your chief officer know about it."
The man shakes his head desperately agreeing to my words. I guess this was enough to make him understand. turning to Josh, I tell him to provide first aid to the man as I walk out of the room. Shortly after that, Max jogs towards me catching up with my pace.
"What the fuck Chris?" He demands angrily halting me in midway.

"What?" I ask in a bored tone.
"I would have killed that fucking bastard there. We would have gotten up with our work smoothly if you wouldn't have interrupted." He barks at me.
"Calm down Max," I tell him with my utmost composure. "We don't require to do that and after all he is going to help us, right?" I keep my hand over his shoulder.
But he shakes off my hand and says " You weren't like this Chris." He looks straight into my eyes " Pity... mercy... these words were never in your dictionary. Then what happened now?"
Hearing that I clench my jaw in frustration. What is wrong with him? Can't he just let it go? why is it a big deal to him that I stopped him from taking a life? We don't need to kill everyone in order to get our job done. Sometimes threatening people by getting an account of their weakness is enough to make them work for us.
"Do you realize that you have changed a lot after that accident."
This is ridiculous. I am done with this bullshit now. every other person here is just trying to tell me how incompetent I have become after that accident. This is getting on my nerves now. I know that I have been behaving differently after that accident, no need to rub it on my face every now and then.
"Enough Max, I don't want to talk about this now," I tell him in an exasperated tone. " And make sure that man gets home safely. remember that he is going to help us." With that, I walk past him making my way out of the storehouse.
"Chris wait! Where are you going?" I hear Max shouting behind my back but I don't make any efforts to turn around.
Marching out of the factory, I get into my car and hit the ignition. Sometimes Max gets fucking irritating. Calm down Chris, forget about him. I try to comfort myself by saying that. I take a deep breath and close my eyes, the face of the only person who is capable of making me smile flashes in front of me. It's Nicole. I grin like an idiot thinking about her. It's Friday evening as I drive back to Nicole's house. I have been living at her house for the past three days, Yet I don't get to see her much. At day time when I would be at home, she would be working in her clinic and when at night she would be at home, I would be out for some business deal. This cycle has been continuing for three days. The only time we get together is at breakfast, even then she doesn't talk to me much. I don't know why she is behaving like this. Anyway, I don't mind her not talking to me, the only thing that matters is that I am getting the golden opportunity to be close to her. That's more than enough for me.
Today wouldn't be like any of the preceding days, as I decide to spend more time with Nicole. After gathering much of guts I have planned to ask her out on a dinner. I think we can get to know each other more if we spend time together. Maybe she would be more open to me once we will have a conversation for real. I don't know how she would react but still, it wouldn't kill me to just ask her. Who knows she might say yes to my offer. I remember when I decided the first time to ask her for dinner, but before me asking her, it turned out to be an unpleasant event of her escaping out. After that, I had to spend my whole year searching for her. I am glad that I didn't lose my sanity in the process of finding her. At least I deserve a fucking proper dinner night with her for going through all this suffering.
Soon I reach Nicole's house. parking my car in front of her house I get out of the car. I know she wouldn't be at home now as she would be working. Getting in I straight head to her room. why to her room? Okay, let me explain, though this might sound a little creepy to you guys. Whenever Nicole isn't around, I sneak into her room just to relish her sweet soothing scent. Her whole room smells just like her, and I love how comforting it feels when I get a whiff of it. Don't judge me now, please.
I open the door of her room thinking of doing the same but to my surprise I find Nicole in front of her mirror.
"What the fuck?" she turns around looking equally surprised.
I don't say anything as I dumbfoundedly stare at her. She looks absolutely gorgeous in a red off-shoulder top and high waisted black jeans. Her hair is tied up in a high pony, which suits her so well. I look at her popping collar bone and instantly brush off the unholy thoughts that begin to swim in my mind.
"What are you doing here?" I ask her a little baffled.
"What do you mean by what am I doing here? I am sorry that you forgot the obvious that this is my house." She narrows her eyes at me.
I ignore her sarcasm as I shoot back a question at her "Where are you going?" From her appearance, it is evident that she is getting ready to go out. Where is she going?
"Butting in other people's business isn't a good thing, Christopher," she says defensively crossing her arms over her chest.
For that brief moment, I don't contemplate anything else, the only thing that resonates in my mind is her sweet voice calling my name. This is the first time that I heard my name from her mouth and it sounds fucking awesome. I can listen to her all day calling my name, precisely more in different timbres. If you know what I mean. Christopher, don't lose your shit now.
I open my mouth to tell her how good my name sounded coming from her, however, I get distracted by the continuous blow of horns that come about from outside. Fucking great!
I make my way in annoyance towards the window to look at the idiot who is honking like a maniac. I am surprised to see a kid sitting in a car right in front of the house. A wave of jealousy dashes through my body as I think about the possibility of him being here for Nicole. Who is he? Is he her boyfriend? No, he cant be. He hardly looks like 16 or 17 years old. Is he even legal to fuck around with girls? Fuck! Is Nicole really into younger kids? No, Who would want to date a kid with a fucking lollipop in his mouth? Why do I suddenly feel so old? Stop it, Christopher! You need to confirm it before jumping into any conclusions.
Suddenly I am being yanked back. I turn to find Nicole pulling me by my arm and in the process of pulling me, she stumbles on the carpet losing her balance. but before she can hit the floor I flip us over, so that I am beneath her and she is on top of me. With a loud thud, I land on the ground. Fuck! I probably broke my spine. It totally hurts like a bitch. I close my eyes and groan in pain. but all my pain goes away as I open my eyes and see the beauty who is staring back at me. Nicole's face is so close to me that I can carve every delicate feature of her face with my hands. I see her bright blue eyes stare at me with a bewildered look in them. I look at her cute little nose and pink lips. For the first time, I discover that she has a mole on the left side of her chin, which makes her look even sexier. It feels like the universe has stopped just to give me a moment to admire her beauty. I tug a loose strand behind her ear that has fallen over her face. She doesn't make an effort to move as we keep staring at each other. but the mesmeric trance between us is broken as soon as we hear a loud annoying honking. I am going to kill that Bastard for doing this.
Taking it as an indication to move, Nicole hurriedly gets off me. she straightens herself and I clearly see the red color engulfing her face. she looks darn cute when she blushes. Can someone tell me why is she so cute?
"What the fuck Christopher, Why did you go there? What if he saw you here with me?" she snaps angrily.
"Is that kid here for you?" I ask her with a slightly bitter tone, standing back on my feet. Thank god! My back is alright.
She rolls her eyes clearly indicating that she didn't like what I said.
"Yes, I am going out with my friends," she tells me dusting herself off. Why is she doing that? I don't look dirty, do I? or it is it something else? does she hates me so much that she wants to brush off even my touch off her?
She advances towards the door and turns around to look at me one more time " You don't have to wait for me." with that I watch her retreating figure vanishing from my sight. Yet, I lose another chance at trying my luck to impress her. How does hindrance always find its way in my plans? Fuck my life....again.
