《Football Girl》Chapter 22

AYANNA'S POV:
I stare at the screen in shock as i see what 'Quarterback' wrote. All this time... It's been...Jake? What in the world. That can't be right. This guy is lying. Why in the world would Jake talk to me in secret. It just doesn't make an freaking sense what so ever.
I sit back on my bed and blow out a deep breath. Holy crap. This has been an interesting day.
I pick up my phone and text Jake.
'we need to talk...tomorrow,' i type and the reply is instant.
'....ok....'
If this was just some joke to him, i swear i will kill him. I told him stuff that i thought would be a secret because i thought it was either someone i didn't know, or someone i loved, like Bryson.
I finally fall asleep, late that night, but am jolted awake when i hear pounding on the front door. I slowly go down stairs and open the door to see Jake standing there, looking grim.
He takes one look at me and immediatly starts blushing and looking away. I look down and see that i am only in an oversized shirt that goes down a little ways past my butt. Frick...
Normally i doubt he would be embarrassed if he saw some girl like this, because that's just the way he is, but this is different. I am his best friend's girlfriend, and his teammate. This is way awkward for both of us.
"Um, come in and sit on the couch, i'll just go change into some regular clothes," I mutter and practically sprint up the stairs.
I change into a pair of jeans and a shirt and notice that it's 10:30 A.M. So my parents are already at work. Good. They don't need to hear this conversation.
I walk back down the stairs and see Jake sitting awkwardly on the couch with a determined look on his face. He glances in my direction and when he sees me, he immediatly stands up and starts pacing.
"You might as well have a seat," he says and i roll my eyes.
"Gee thanks for allowing me to sit down in my own house," I reply and he smirks.
"Anytime,"
"So..." I say and stare at him. He catches my eye and quickly looks away.
"Don't judge to harshly, ok? We....We just....Didn't know who you were," he says and i stare at him in confusion.

"We?" I ask and he sighs.
"I guess i just better start with it then....So, it all began when you first came here. I mean, i didn't really notice you and neither did Bryson or anybody else for that matter until you tried out for the football team. At first i thought it was some joke because there is no way a girl like you, no offense, would ever trully want to go out for the team and actually expect to make it.
"Well, you did make it, obviously, and that's when Bryson and I started to worry. Bryson....I......Well, we saw how good you actually were and we both got kind of nervous. And at the time Bryson was dating Sharon and you embarrassed her, so naturally Bryson...uh...we.... thought it was time for some payback.
"I know how that sounds. REally petty. I know.. But Bryson also knew that you wanted the quarterback spot and he refused to be beat by some girl. He has had that spot since he was a freshman and he wasn't going to let you take his spot. So, Bryson...uh, we.... decided to do something that would make you want to quit the team.
"So.... Bryson and I decided to, um, get you to really trust someone to tell that person all of your secrets and have that person tell us what they were, so, uh, we could expose them to the entire school. What we needed to really succede with our plan was to find ther perfect person for you to trust.
"We, uh, we origanlly thought Max would be a good person or even Sharon, but we quickly ruled out Sharon when you guys got into another big fight. And then we ruled out Max because we saw that you guys were actually becoming friends and that he wouldn't tell us anything about you even if we bribed him.
"So, we finally thought of a person that you couldn't see, like our, um, chat thing. We thought if we could create someone you could share things with that everything would work out in our favor. I, um, i told Bryson that i, well, that i could probably get you to tell me things if i started just agreeing with everything you said about Bryson. I tried my hardest to get you to start trusting me and telling me things and eventually you did.

"At first it was just little things that didn't really matter, but then the secrets started to get bigger and soon you really really trusted me and i felt like a dick, but by then it didn't matter because Bryson had already called it off and we weren't going to do it anymore. Then, Bryson and you started going out and everything was fine and i was going to stop talking to you.
"I don't know why i didn't stop. I just... I don't know. I wanted to tell you about it, maybe that's why, but if i had told you, you would have gotten mad at Bryson and i didn't want to ruin your guy's relationship. You kept asking who i was and i almost told you so many times because i thought and think that we are friends, but i couldn't force myself to until last night.
"Bryson... He felt so bad, and i know he still does. Please, don't blame him, it was both of our faults," Jake explains and by the time he is done i am so pissed and hurt that i am ready to hate both of them.
" I trusted you... Both of you," I say quietly and Jake flinches.
"I know.." he begins to say.
"No! You don't know! You don't know how much i trusted you! Especially when you were playing the chat guy. I told him...You... I told you things that should never have been told to you. I trusted Bryson. We are or were boyfriend and girlfriend," i shout.
"Don't say you guys were. You can get over this rough patch. I know you guys can," Jake says and over to me, but i jump up from the couch and stalk awway from him.
"Get out of my house! NOW," I yell and he looks like he is about to protest, but i shove him towards the door.
"I'm sorry," he says and walks out of the house.
I plop down on the couch and glare at my phone when it bings that someone is trying to teext me. I grab it and throw it across the room when i see that Bryson texted 'good morning beautiful'.
I sit on the couch for about an hour until i hear someone knocking on the door again. I scowl at it before opening it to see Bryson standing there with a grin on his face.
I feel like punching him.
"What?"I snap and he raises his eyebrows in amusment, not even suspecting that i know the truth.
"Well, aren't we in a good mood this morning," he says and tries to pull me in for a hug, but i pull away from him and glare.
"Seriously, Jones, what's the matter?" He asks after a couple minutes of my glaring.
"Like you don't know,"I snap.
"Um, no can't say i do,"
"Oh, ok, act all innocent, but i know why you started acting nice to me,"I sneer and that makes him freeze. He stares at me in shock and i feel like hitting something or someone.
"Wh-what?"
"Yeah! I know all about your little scheme to spill all of my secrets,"I say and walk away and into the living room.
Of course he follows me and looks like he really really wants to talk to me about what 'actually' happened, but there is no way i am going to be pulled in by his lies.
"Aya... I know it sounds bad, what i did to you. But you have to understand that i didn't know you..."
"Does it even freaking matter? I trusted you! I thought you liked me! I thought...Never mind," I mutter and he grabs my arm gently and looks me in the eyes.
"Aya, please just listen to me," he pleads, but i shake my head and i can feel tears welling in my eyes.
"I've heard enough, i don't want to hear anymore, so please just leave,"I say and a few tears escape my eyes.
Bryson brushes them off of my face with his thumbs and i heave a heavy sigh. I never wanted us to end, especially not like this, but i guess all good things come to an end.
"I never wanted to hurt you," he whispers and kisses my forehead before stepping back, blinking his watery eyes, and walkiing waay.
I sink to the floor and start sobbing. Why did i have to fall for him? Why did life have to be so cruel?

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
