《Writer's Guide》Grammar/Spelling/Punctuation
Advertisement
These are some tips/rules when it comes to spelling and grammar and punctuation when writing. I've seen a lot of errors in fan fictions and I'm tired of it. Of course, this won't change much, but it will hopefully make those who read this more aware.
If you've read over other sections of this Writer's Guide, then you'll see that I'm repeating some stuff I've mentioned earlier on. I'm sorry if my repetitiveness bugs you, but some people need to be reminded.
personal pronouns (I, me). This is from the storyteller's point of view, or perspective.
he, she, it, or they.
I walk down the street and see Emma, my best friend.
Third Person Writing Example --> Jess walks down the street and sees Emma, her best friend.
DO NOT SWITCH BETWEEN THIRD PERSON AND FIRST PERSON IN A STORY. I did that when I was younger and looking back on it, it looks bad. There may be some instances where it's okay to switch, but do so carefully.
- Get (present) VS Got (past)
- I am (present) VS I was (past)
- You are (present) VS You were (past).
- She hates him (present) VS She hated him (past)
They run (present) VS They ran (past)
Do not switch between present tense and past tense unless appropriate. For example, if you write a story in present tense but the narrator (whether it be first person, second person or third person) or a character is talking about an event that already happened, it's okay to switch into past tense for that part.
"I love him," I tell Louis.
He smiles and says, "Aw, that's sweet. Congratulations. How did you guys meet?"
I smile as I recollect our first meeting. "I was working down at the supermarket. He came to the front counter to pay and he started flirting. We sort of just...clicked."

“Where am I?” The place seemed familiar yet my head ached each time I tried to remember it. “This place is kinda creepy.” Wait, what happened to the school? “There should be a plane crash around here somewhere. Also, why am I still alive?” Or maybe... This is the afterlife? “Wait. Nevermind that.” “How in the world could a plane even crash on me like that?” As I stood, I got a glimpse of my right hand touching the ground. “AHHHHHHHHH---!!!” There was no flesh. “Sh*t. What is this?! Why are my hands just bones?! Am I decomposing?! It doesn’t seem to hurt though.” Just like normal, I could feel my heart beating faster, however, as I touched my chest, I felt my fingers sliding through the intervals of my ribs; my heart was gone. “Aaaaah!” As I panicked, I heard a girl’s voice behind me. “Ahm... Suddenly, something touched my right shoulder. My body froze. Slowly, I looked at it; I saw a hand wrapped in white bandage.
