《old coffee and cigarettes》Chapter Fifteen

Six o'clock couldn't come fast enough.

Eddie had eventually managed to fall asleep, for an hour or two, before the sun streamed in through his window and he'd woken up. After that he didn't know quite what to do with himself. He washed his face and had leftover pasta that he found at the back of his fridge, but when he checked his clock, it was only eleven.

He sighed, frustrated, and tried to preoccupy himself. He played his guitar and flicked through his television and tried to come up with a couple ideas for his next Hellfire meeting. But his mind kept wandering back to the night before and he found it impossible to concentrate on anything for longer than a few minutes.

Finally, blissfully, he heard a knock on his door at six o'clock sharp. He all but ran towards it and flung it open, ushering Robin in quickly and slamming the door shut behind her.

She walked over to his kitchen and began making herself a cup of coffee. Eddie watched her, hand twitching, and waited for her to speak. Eventually, after taking a long sip from her mug, she set it down on the counter and turned to look at Eddie with wide eyes.

"So?"

Eddie blinked. "So what?"

Robin threw her arms up in frustration. "So, are you going to tell me what happened between you and Steve last night or am I going to have to guess for myself?"

Eddie sat her down on the couch and moved to sit next to her, taking a cigarette from his pocket and lighting it. She shifted, so she was facing him, arms crossed, and one eyebrow raised.

Eddie felt himself squirm uncomfortably under the intensity of her gaze, but he took a deep breath and told her everything. He told her the guilt he felt after she'd left his trailer yesterday, and that he hadn't wanted to ruin things further by going out last night. He told her how Steve had knocked on his door well into the night and asked to come in. He took a long drag of his cigarette before working up the courage to tell her that Steve had kissed him, that he'd kissed him back and then made him leave.

"God, I'm such an idiot," Eddie groaned, knocking his head against Robin's shoulder.

She stayed quiet the entire time he spoke, but now she grabbed Eddie's shoulders and forced him up, gripping him a little harder than Eddie felt was necessary.

"Listen to me," she said, her tone commanding and serious. "I'm your friend, Eddie. I'm going to worry about you. It's what friends do when they care about the people they love, they worry, and they look after them. Never, ever feel guilty for that. You hear me?"

Eddie felt a rush of affection for Robin at her words. Once again, he was reminded of how special she was. He didn't deserve her, he knew that, but he was so damn grateful she was here. He nodded slowly and Robin smiled, pulling him into a tight hug.

"And don't worry about Steve," she mumbled into his shoulder. "We'll work something out."

Eddie said nothing but held on to her tighter and blinked the tears away from his eyes.

A while later, Eddie was lying on his couch, strumming a chord on his guitar whilst Robin sat on the carpet in front of his television, only half paying attention to the movie she was watching. Grease, she'd eventually picked out and Eddie was reminded inevitably of Steve.

I tell everyone my favourite movie is Top Gun, but it's actually Grease.

Robin had gasped when she saw it in Eddie's pile of VHS tapes and held it up excitedly. Eddie hadn't wanted to admit to her that the only reason he'd got it was because Steve had said it was his favourite movie, so he'd lied and said it was Wayne's.

Of course, she didn't believe him.

"So, are you going to talk to Steve again?" she asked eventually, her eyes still fixed on the screen in front of her.

Eddie tilted his head up to look at her and frowned. "I guess, he's supposed to come here later."

Robin swivelled around, facing Eddie with wide eyes. "What, tonight? Why didn't you tell me sooner? What are you going to say to him?"

Eddie shrugged and went back to playing his guitar. "Guess we'll have to wait and see."

Robin shook her head vigorously and got up, leaning over Eddie with her hands on her hips. Eddie knew the expression on her face, knew a plan was forming in her mind from the way her eyes lit up and the corners of her mouth tugged into a sly smile.

But before she could say anything a sharp knock erupted from the door.

Eddie sat up abruptly and Robin spun on her heels. They stared at the door, neither saying a word.

The knock sounded again.

Legs trembling, Eddie got up from the couch and over to the door. He swung it open.

Steve stood somewhat awkwardly outside; a nervous smile plastered on his face. His eyes lit up when he saw Eddie and he ran a hand through his hair.

"Hey."

"Hey."

A beat of silence passed between them, although to Eddie it felt like a lifetime.

"Hi, Steve!" Robin's cheery voice called out from inside the trailer. "Come in! We're watching Grease!"
