《old coffee and cigarettes》Chapter Eight

They ended up sitting in a circle on the floor, Nancy's head resting on Robin's shoulder, their fingers entwined together.

They seemed so perfect like that, like they were the only two pieces of a puzzle that fit together, whilst the rest was left scattered and abandoned on the floor.

Steve and Eddie sat opposite them, waiting patiently.

Eddie was beginning to feel tired. He rubbed his eyes, trying to keep himself awake. He glanced at the clock on the wall, it was 11:49, late but not particularly late for Eddie. He frowned, rubbing his eyes again.

What the fuck were in those pills?

Robin cleared her throat uncertainly, glancing at Nancy. She gave a small nod, and Robin turned her gaze back to the boys. Her expression was an odd mixture of terror and relief.

Eddie could hear Steve fidget beside him. Eddie couldn't help but feel sorry for him, it's not everyday you find out your ex is dating your best friend.

"What I'm about to tell you both cannot leave this room. No one can know about this, okay?" She said fiercely, looking them both in the eye. It seemed more like an order than a request but Steve and Eddie both nodded their heads and waited for her to proceed.

"Nancy and I... we're, uh, dating. We've been going out for a few weeks now," she revealed, and Nancy nodded her head in confirmation.

Steve looked like he was bursting with questions, but he remained silent and let Robin continue.

"We wanted to keep this a secret because..." she trailed off, looking at Nancy hesitantly.

"Because I'm not really... We aren't-"

"We're not ready for people to know just yet," Nancy finished quietly, finally looking up to stare at Steve and Eddie.

She was trying her best to look brave, but Eddie could see the fear in her eyes. He's known that fear, although he'd never admit that to anyone. And he hated that Nancy felt that way, hated that Robin felt that way more so. He felt a pang in his chest looking at her. At her shaking hands and tired eyes, not the kind of tired he was feeling, but the sort that suggested she was on the edge of giving up, the sort of tired someone would feel after carrying a secret that was too heavy to bear for so long, that eventually you want to just toss it away.

But you can't. Eddie couldn't. Nancy and Robin couldn't. And he couldn't let Robin suffer like that.

He hesitated, choosing his words carefully.

"I understand, thank you for telling us."

It wasn't what he wanted to say, but with Steve sitting restless beside him and Nancy on the verge of tears, he decided it was the best thing he could say to them right now.

There was a heavy silence, filled with hidden feelings and broken promises, and secrets better left in the dark, until eventually Eddie elbowed Steve sharply in the ribs.

He yelped.

"Y-Yeah, really happy for you guys," he said, fixing them a genuine smile.

Nancy smiled back.

"Thank you Steve, you have no idea how much that means to me."

There's another awkward silence. Eddie fidgets with his rings, wanting to say something, the words on the tip of his tongue yet he couldn't force them out of his mouth.

Eventually, Robin sighed and rolled her eyes.

"Alright Steve, you can ask your questions now."

"I-I don't have any questions!"

Robin just raised an eyebrow.

"Okay fine," he paused, struggling to find the right choice of words. "What happened to Vickie? I mean... I thought..." he trailed off. Even in the dark, Eddie could see the colour rising to his cheeks. It made him smile a little.

Robin smiled too, but her eyes were sad.

"It was never going to work out between us, Vickie and I... there was too much pain and secrets there. One moment she wanted me, the next she was pushing me away telling me she wasn't..." she trailed off, tears forming in her eyes.

Nancy squeezed her hand and wiped the tears away with her thumb. They shared a smile, and Eddie felt his face flush from embarrassment. He felt like he and Steve were intruding something personal, and looking at the boy sitting next to him, he could tell Steve felt the same way.

Then Robin turned to look at him again. She was waiting for him to speak, wanted him to, he could tell.

The worst thing was he knew there was only one thing he could say that would really make it better for her. Better for both of them. And, fuck, he wanted to make it better.

He glanced uncertainly at Steve.

Then turned to look Robin in the eye.

"I... I know how you feel," he began unsteadily, every instinct he had telling him to stop, but he ignored it and carried on. "I know how you both feel, and I can't say it'll get easier but if there's anything you ever need, I'm here for you guys."

"Yeah," Steve chimed in, "we've saved the world so many times, I've lost count at this point. If we can handle demogorgans and Vecna, we can handle this," he paused, "together."

"Together," Eddie agreed.

And now Nancy was truly crying, tears spilling down her cheeks, glistening in the light of the moon. But this time she was smiling, clutching Robin's hand like she never wanted to let go.

And Eddie knew she didn't.
