《Unnatural Disaster || JJK ✔️》Chapter 53: Midnight Pt. 2 [Edited]

Resting my forehead against the cold glass I stared out the window, silently watching as the galloping foliage passed by casting their dark silhouettes on the grey streets. The night sky was sheathing the planet like a blanket weaved with stars and the cold breeze that came along with it was knocking on the shut windows every once in a while as if asking to be let in, inside the warmth. But the car kept moving, cutting through those very winds, denying their every request.
It took nearly thirty minutes for the car to make it's way from the hospital to the police station but those mere minutes for me felt like hours of agonizing anticipation while the darkness my heart was gradually being engulfed into stung like hell.
Just this morning had we been spawning schemes to get my sister back from the evil clutches of Sang Ook but now, now we didn't even know if we'd get to see her ever again, or perhaps, if she'd get that opportunity. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine seeing my little sister lying pale and lifeless on a hospital bed, struggling hard to stay put. This was all so messed up!
I desperately wanted to believe that all this was just a very scary nightmare but somehow I never managed to wake up from it. It hurt so bad to think that Y/N might heave her last breath any moment now and it hurt even more to think that the person responsible for it might be the one that I had started to adore like a little brother.
Why did you do this Jungkook.....why?
I heard how Jin accused him of being stupid enough to take such a drastic decision all by himself and I wouldn't deny feeling bad about it but at some level, I too knew that Jin wasn't wrong. It was foolish of Jungkook to take matters in his own hands. He knew that a single wrong move could possibly push us all off the ledge and yet he did it anyway. Was he not thinking at all or was all this a part of his plan as well?
At this point, I honestly didn't know. First he acts all emotional and earns our trusts but then we learn that it was all a strategy. After that he conspires with Y/N alone about the entire getting arrested thing and doesn't tell us. And then again, Y/N goes missing from his car and now, she's struggling to survive on a freaking hospital bed while we were being dragged into a police investigation that'd most probably render us all behind bars, which to think about, had been Jungkook's intention all along.
Things were making too much sense but not in the way I'd want them to and that was bothering me big time. A part of me kept reassuring me that Jungkook might be wrong but not deceitful as such but then again, the other part kept on nagging, claiming that I had done a humongous mistake in judging him. But either way, the anguish was surreal.
I was so torn between my heart and my head that I didn't even realize when the car came to a halt in front of the station gates. The driver undid the automated locks on the doors and Jungkook was the first to hop down from the vehicle. Bowing to the driver for his assistance, he made his way around the car to come to our door, clearly to hand us over to our impending fates. Guess it's time to just let go.

Once the door was opened Jin was the first to get off as he was the one sitting at the edge. There was a point when Jungkook tried to lend him a hand to help him with his trembling state but Jin just thrashed away making the younger male retreat his hand right away. The angry growl he sent Jin's way as a response didn't go unnoticed by me and that's when I actually laid my eyes on Jungkook's face, for the first time in the evening and if I must say, it looked like a blank surface devoid of any emotions, but that was the surface only. If I looked hard enough I could see some sentiments sparkling in his eyes and that gave me some motivation to actually consider my heart over my brain but how disappointed was I to know that they were nothing but hostility and resentment.
Was I really wrong? Does he really hate us that much?
One by one we all got down before the car drove off into the parking space. Two more cops ran out from the building only for us to be barricaded by their armed presence, as if we were some kind of monstrous beings coming here to harm them. Were we that scary? This might be the first time that I was truly feeling like a felon and honestly, it didn't feel good. I felt so useless, so disgraceful.
Is this how Y/N used to feel when her classmates bullied her for being related to a mafia?
I was amused as to how strong that girl always had been to be able to go through all these for so many years. I was always guarded behind the protection of the mansion walls but she was the one who was facing the world dead on.
Unknowingly a drop of tear rolled down my cheek and when I hurried to wipe it away, my eyes unintentionally landed on Jungkook's that were looking right back at me. Though he quickly moved his gaze once he saw me looking but even if it happened in a fraction of second, I still managed to catch a glimpse of softness in eyes, almost like......regret?
Is he feeling sorry for us, or is he really just that good of an actor?
Being pushed into the office building we were lead straight into the elevator and once the contraption dinged on the third and the final floor, we were likewise pushed out. From there Jungkook and the other two cops guided us to a certain cabin at the farthest corner of the hallway. There was a nameplate stuck to the wooden door, reading Kim Namjoon. This is it, isn't it?
Landing two soft knocks on the wood Jungkook pushed open the door before inviting us in but he refrained from calling in the other two cops and they nonchalantly went away.
"Come in, take a seat" Namjoon's gruff voice echoed through the silent, cold room and we complied to his command, not wanting to create scenes in the presence of the senior officer. It was just once before that we had met him and yet I could sense the power and dominance radiating off of him. However, he also seemed smart and descent. Maybe he'd listen to us before jumping into conclusions?
"Si-" I heard Hoseok starting to say something, clearly to the senior cop but the latter began talking as well at the same time and Hoseok ceased his debate before pressing back into the sponge of his chair. Namjoon totally ignored his advancements though, intentionally or not that I didn't know.

"So, tell me Jungkook, what actually happened?" he turned his chair towards the junior cop standing by the door and the latter immediately started talking.
"Yes hyung, as you already know, Kim Y/N was kidnapped five days ago on her way to the police station and the cops had no idea who might be behind it. It was getting hard to track her whereabouts but then we managed to hack into some past information about her parent's death with the help of Mr. Kim Taehyung here-"
"Yeah, that much I know, what happened after that?"
Namjoon sat up in his chair with his elbows now pressing on to the mahogany, his forearms standing straight as he rested his chin on top of his entwined fists, all while slightly gliding left and right in his boss' chair. He looked at Jungkook with eyes full of anticipation and the junior continued his narrative.
"That day when we hacked into the hospital server, we found out that Myung Dae's death was conspired by his own assistant Sang Ook and we went back to the Kim Mansion to share the new intel with the others but shortly after Mr. Min Yoongi received a mail from our suspect Sang Ook himself, confirming our doubts.
He said that he had detained Y/N and would not hesitate to kill her if Min Yoongi didn't go and meet him alone. Though the men were clever enough to see through Sang Ook's evil intentions and decided to take things slow, I being a cop and also a close friend of Y/N couldn't just sit back and watch. So I weaved a plan of my own and with the company of Mr. Park Jimin and Mr. Kim Taehyung, I went on a rescue mission for Y/N.
But unfortunately things didn't go as planned. Miss Y/N ended up being fatally wounded in the battle field while the men of the antagonist were eliminated, along with Mr. Min Jun, Sang-Ook's son"
The boy took a break as he seemed short of air from all the talking but never did his voice falter while he narrated the entire incident. He seemed unbothered by all of it, however, I couldn't say the same about his eyes. Deep in them there was some kind of pain as if he too was affected just like we were but was trying real hard to hide it. Why though?
Also I heard him refer Y/N as his friend and I wanted so bad to believe that he meant it.
"Okay, so you are telling me that the only survivors of the fight are you, Taehyung, Jimin and Y/N?"
"Yes hyung but according to your advise I took all authorized guns with me for the fight and those are the ones that Taehyung and Jimin used to shoot at people"
Wait a minute? His advise? Did he know about the plan too?
"Good, now we can simply make the entire incident look like a police encounter and if the higher authorities want proof, we can very well show them the licensed bullets we'd retrieve from the autopsy center. The court will simply think that it was you and two other cops that were at the scene and likely your friends won't be charged for the unaccredited killings" while saying the last part Namjoon spared Jimin and Taehyung a side glance as if cautioning them in case they wanted to repeat their actions. And the two aforementioned only bore a face of utter shock. Things got real confusing real quick, to the point that it was getting hard to keep up.
"But hyung, when we reached there, Y/N had already freed herself and she also managed to kill two guards even before we arrived so the gun she used wasn't ours" Jungkook let out a sigh of desperation and for the first time did he reveal his true emotions on his face, misery.
"Umm, that can be a problem" Namjoon pushed his round specs up on the bridge of his nose as he looked around the room as if he was thinking something deeply. "If the court charges her for killing without permission, I might not be able to get her out penalty free, I'm sorry Guk" he exclaimed with a sympathy that felt very real.
"Don't lose hope yet though, I'm seeing what I can do" he continued talking to Jungkook but soon after, he turned around and was now facing us dead on.
"And you guys..." he pointed his index at each one of us and from the corner of my eyes, I could see Jimin and Taehyung cowering under his sharp glare.
"I want you all to be vigilant from now on. Even if you didn't do anything too diabolical so far but being a part of a mafia is still pretty bad. The odds may have turned to your favor this once but I don't want you to count on it. Things are not going to be the same in future if you keep up with your illegal activities. So if you wanna stay out of any unnecessary harassment then stay away from the criminal world as much as you can. Okay?"
I was amused as to how obediently we all nodded to the officer's demands. Maybe we did it because deep down, we knew he was right. I mean we wouldn't have even gotten this one chance if it wasn't for Y/N taking all the blame on herself using legal pursuits. And moreover, we weren't some criminal minded people who'd kill others for fun or other sadistic reasons. In fact, the truth is, we would love to do anything but run a mafia. And now that we were getting the opportunity served to us on a silver platter, I saw no sane reason to let it pass.
On getting assertive responses from the five of us, Namjoon flashed us a professional smile before turning back to Jungkook who had been standing silent by the door all this while.
"Your friends are free to go now but we might need them again if the higher authorities demand for a trial regarding the warehouse massacre. I'll let you know though if anything as such comes up but for now, they are out of threat but that's only for as long as they decide to do what's right" he said the last part looking at us and all we could do was bow in respect and assurance.
"Sure hyung, thanks"
"Good, and by the way, how's Miss Y/N doing?" the Jungkook that seemed okay just a few moments ago turned pale all of a sudden at Namjoon's query and the distress in his eyes returned, with full vigor. Even Namjoon too seemed a little guilty for asking him that.
"Not good hyung, not good" for the first time in ever did I see Jungkook completely lose it. He broke down in front of all of us and drops of sorrow cascaded down his cheeks like a perennial fountain. Namjoon immediately jumped up from his seat and skipped to the young boy only to engulf him in a big warm hug, the latter getting completely hidden behind Namjoon's tall and burly stature.
"Don't worry Guk, she'll be fine. She is strong, isn't she? I mean you just told me that she freed her own self even before you guys reached there. She must be a very strong individual then and I'm sure she'll make it through. You should not lose your hope, okay"
Jungkook responded to his hyung with short but quick nods before darting out of the room while rubbing his eyes vigorously.
"Sorry, I'll be right back, gotta use the washroom" his voice faded and so did his figure behind the corner. Clearly he was hiding his pain from all of us all along and I couldn't help but feel bad for him. I already had a hint of how deeply he might feel for Y/N, I mean, we all did see him kiss her in the hospital and Y/N kissed him back which could only imply that the feeling was mutual. Yet we all just stupidly let the doubts and gloom crowd our judgement and make us take rash decisions.
I guess we needed some strong apologizing to do. However, that was for later. For now, I had other things in mind, starting with the question I was about to ask Namjoon.
"Why are you helping us Officer Namjoon?" I heaved a deep breath before looking at the man square in his eyes and he did the same. The answer he then provided us with made things so much more lucid.
"You see, I trust that little dongsaeng of mine very much. His father, Officer Jeon was my mentor. He was the one who told me that there was something much more important than being just a good cop, and that is to be a good human being. He taught me to do better than to judge people on superficial levels. He used to say that as a cop we shouldn't just focus on eliminating the wrong, instead we should try and make things right. He made me understand that every villain has a story of his own and we should always listen to their part before passing a judgement for there may be some who doesn't need detainment, but just a little help.
And I've been trying to pursue his wisdom ever since. Uncle Jeon made me who I am today, he was more than just a mentor to me and now I see those exact same qualities in his son. I trust Jungkook with whatever decision he takes, so if he's saying you guys deserve a second chance, then I believe you do..."
