《Unnatural Disaster || JJK ✔️》Chapter 35: The Light [Edited]

Laying my eyes on a brand new day, the warm rays hitting my face brimmed me up with an unfamiliar serenity. White clouds floating against the beautiful sapphire sky, a nature's masterpiece so alluring. The sun barely peered through the dense condensations and flocks of birds soaring through the mellow wind sounded more euphonious than ever. The far away mountain range standing with pride blended against the blue backdrop and the snow reflected the sun rays like a polished mirror.
Tucking the silk curtains heedfully behind the window rails I rested my head against one of the iron rods, breathing in deeply the sweet scent of peace. Last night's unfeigned exchange felt like a doorway to the appalling maze we were stuck in and exiting through the same rendered us in a beautiful garden of hopes, a place that bloomed with the brightest smiles. And one of those was now in my possession, a genuine and true portrayal of bliss.
As I slowly walked over to the vanity, it felt nothing less than a miracle. The girl looking back at me through the mirror wasn't Kim Brute anymore, it was Y/N. I don't know how but the innocence in her eyes was back. I could clearly see the passion shine bright in them, the one that I believed was lost. And I couldn't help but stare with awe. Was I really back?
And soon, memories from years ago started flooding in...
"Y/n dear, eomma and appa wants you to have the life you truly want. And this boarding school will help you with it. Don't worry sweat heart, no matter what you choose, we'll always love you like our little princess..."
"One day my daughter will be a famous artist and she'll make her appa so proud..."
"Don't worry Kimchi, your suga oppa will protect you from all the tyrants back at school. No seriously, I think we should sneak into their dorms and ruin their makeup and stuffs with paints. That'd teach them to not mess with my little sister..."
"And when you find the light, grab a brush and paint it with your favourite colors..."

I think I found the light.
A small chuckle gurgled up my chest at the thought of my own idiocy. Why did I even think I was meant for a pathetic life like this? Every person that has ever loved or cared for me wanted me to follow my dreams and yet I let the antagonistic society mold me into someone I never wanted to be. I kept on urging myself into a choice between my late parents and Yoongi, stupid me didn't even comprehend that they were always on the same side.
I kept telling myself that I didn't belong to the world of aspirations but now I knew better. Other's opinions can never be more important than my own, not when those people mean nothing to me. And everybody that meant something to me always wanted me to be happy. So now, that was exactly what I was going to do.
Fits of laughter bubbled up the air as a group of supposed adults wrestled each other like a bunch eminent kids, rolling and running against the cold, wet grass. The view from my first floor window only grew more appealing as I merrily glanced over the garden where Taehyung had Yoongi running behind him for some sort of payback while Jimin rolled on the grass laughing relentlessly to the point where his face turned red and a nonchalant Hoseok sat by a tree judging the elderly babies with an honed gaze.
The shrill chaos they made could have been annoying to someone's ears but for me, it filled my heart with a raging sense of contentment that my oh-so dear family was just as happy.
Skipping down the stairs with excited steps I made my way to the kitchen only to be greeted by yet another unanticipated but auspicious scene. Clearly the maids and servants hadn't returned from their last night's intermission and hence two fairly good looking men had taken up the responsibility to cook for the family. And in the most unexpected turn of events, the two men happened to be Seokjin and Jungkook.
Last time I checked, Jin was still pretty upset about Jungkook intervening into our lives, what happened to that now?

"Hey"
The two heads snapped to my direction, giving me a lucid view of their sweaty faces, which on Jungkook looked damn hot but on my brother, gross! (just saying from the perspective of a sister)
"Hey..." they returned my greeting in unison before going back to their respective tasks. Jin was busy tossing flat cakes on the pan with skillful gestures while Jungkook was efficiently cutting some fruits on the counter. The former had his back turned on me but from where I was standing, I had a vivid view of the other one. The way the knife smoothly slashed through the fruits under Jungkook's strong hands, the way his sleeve stayed rolled up exposing his rippling muscles, the way his soft bangs drizzled with the waves of the morning breeze barging in through the open window, let's just say it was quite the view.
"How was your sleep Y/N-aah?" it was Jin's voice that broke me out of my daydream and a smile cracked through just at the mere thought of it.
"Peaceful" that one word described it all.
Jungkook passed me a cheerful grin with a small nod as a congratulating gesture and I did the same but in gratitude. After all, he was the one that managed to break through our hard shells and change our lives. I guess getting acceptance from him made us realize, not all hate us. He made us believe that there were still people in the society who once knew the truth would actually make an effort to befriend us. Jungkook, in spite of being from a very different background, chose to believe us and that gave us hope for a life less solitary.
"Pancakes are done!" yet again it was Jin's voice, probably breaking through the roof this time. Damn, that boy can shout. Within seconds the members flooded the kitchen like a swarm of flies, poking on every edibles they could get their hands on, that was until they got scolded by the eldest though. We sat together on the table served with love and care, sharing laughter and creating eternal memories there by marking the day a success.
It didn't take long for the beautiful day to blend into a starry evening. The sun had retired long ago giving way to the rising moon and the golden glow morphing into a silver shine nudged the earth ever so softly, making the green foliage accentuate with an argent outline.
Basking in the innate beauty I stood in my attic, face to face with a blank new canvas. The brush in my hand traced intangible lines on the white surface with its dry tips providing me with a vague objective of my next painting. Squinting my eyes I once again glanced out the window at my muse when a loud knock resounded through the attic door catching me off guard.
Tucking the brush behind my ear I walked across my scattered paints to open the door and once I did, I was facing Jungkook.
"Hey, what's up? Do you need something?" I asked gesturing the boy to come in. Unlike usual, there was a slight tint of discomfort on Jungkook's face. Well, to be honest, I'd been noticing the same since that morning. He seemed off even during breakfast.
"Umm..." he started but couldn't go through with it.
"Is something wrong Jungkook?"
"There's something I need to tell you" dragging on each words Jungkook grabbed my wrist pulling me to my room and being overwhelmed by the gravity of the entire situation, I didn't resist. However, the resolution in his face sure was freaking me out.
"What happened Jungkook, tell me" on reaching the destination I made him sit on my bed while I pulled up chair for me to keep myself facing him.
Jungkook heaved a deep sigh before blurting some words that rendered me addled.
"I am sorry Y/N, I lied to you"
"W-what?" I couldn't stop the uncertainty from fleeing my throat. However, I still had a smile plastered on my face somehow believing all these to be a joke.
"What are you talking about?" an incoherent crackle left my mouth as I felt myself cowering under his razor sharp gaze.
And my smile dropped.

There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
