《Indelible Affairs》⚜️ Chapter 46⚜️

Double update.

I sat on my bed and waited. Enos implied its safer and best that we both stay at Meghan's house, incase anything happens. His place is officially unholy grounds, for now atleast. Enos said he will fix whatever's left of the mess he got himself into, as soon as tomorrow. Until he's sure everything's cleared up, we're stuck together.

Great. Just freaking great.

How did it come to this?

That now, it's either I watch my back, or.....

"Uhh!" I sighed.

It's almost unreal honestly. Enos has to clarify whats going on with him. I know it was initially none of my business, but since I've been dragged into such a mess, supposedly, I deserve answers.

"Are you okay out there?" He exclaimed from the bathroom.

Enos should probably be more worried about himself. He has two deep open wounds, that he stubbornly refused for me to help clean up.

Goodness.

He's been inside that bathroom for almost an hour, or more. I gathered three alcohol bottles for the man and his injuries earlier.

How many times has Enos been in trouble like this? And to think he's always looking out for others but himself getting attacked by a criminal with his psycho twin minions.

The irony.

"Elisabeth?" Enos called out. "Are you still inside?"

Where else would I go?

"Elisabeth?"

I don't want to make casual conversations right now.

Bad, I feel really awful. What's gonna happen to my mother?

I have to call the attorney tomorrow.

I groaned loudly and laid flat on the bed. Kicking off the shoes, I adjusted myself and got comfortable on the thick mattress.

Making sure to leave some space for Enos at the right.

There's no way am sleeping even an inch away from him. I simply can't.

It's not only because of my fear of being invaded by a bunch of lunatics, but I have this thing called empathy.

The rest of rooms inside this house have very crappy mattresses. With the way Enos is injured, the guy needs a better bed.

Am not letting him sleep on that coach by the living room. It's not even big enough to lay on.

And no, I'm not letting Enos sleep on the floor.

We'll have to share the bed. Its enormous anyways. I know it seems weird and slightly bazaar that am seriously about to share a bed with the same person who almost got the both of us fucked up, but Enos is injured. And I don't think he'd hurt me, Intentionally.

Besides, what if he falls sick or catches a fever? I must be close by. Even though Enos is being reluctant on letting me offer help, I can't ignore he's condition.

I heard Enos fiddling with the faucets in the bathtub.

He came out, drying his hands with a towel. "Why so quiet?"

I withdrew my gaze from his exposed tattooed chest, facing the white ceiling.

"You look terrible." I commented, avoiding his question.

He chuckled, then said. "I feel terrible."

From how those wounds are perfectly bandaged, it's obvious that Enos is used to fixing up his own wounds.

He sat by the bed, leaning on the headboard. Some areas of his face had small cuts as a result of the beating. Specifically his chin and the corner of his face. But nothing serious.

"That may turn into a scar." I pointed at his covered shoulder.

"Wouldn't be the first one." He replied simply.

I couldn't help myself. My eyes automatically surveyed his lean frame.

"Let me show you." He said after noticing my attempts.

Enos pushed forward and bent a bit, revealing his back. There wasn't much to see, the tattoos played a great role in hiding any scars.

"On the lower side, beneath the thorn." He guided.

It was a strange scar. Almost resembling webs or tangled strings.

I found myself touching it gently with my fingers.

It's so....

What's the right words?

"How did you get that?" I asked him, retracting my hand.

"Trust me, you don't want to find out." He leaned back on the headboard.

"It can't be that bad." I uttered.

Enos raised a brow. "Not specifically bad, just disturbing." He said.

I have my own collection of disturbing circumstances, luckily, they didn't leave any physical scars.

"What's your deal?" I had to question.

"Meaning?"

I tried to stop myself from flexing an eye roll. "Everything? Don't act like you're not seeing what am referring to."

Enos frowned.

"Those men? Why did you owe such dangerous people money? Are you involved in something sinister." I inquired.

I hope he's not some kind of criminal too.

"I'm not a crook Elisabeth." He replied. "Sure, I'm a mess, I get it. But I can never harm people."

I don't know if I should take his word for it or not.

I must be vigilant with Enos, it's important to put my guard up. Despite being familiar with him, the truth is, there's alot I don't know about Enos. He may as well be a stranger.

"Who was he? That man?" I refered to the previous scenario at his house.

Those men were terrible. They tried to cripple me. I wasn't even part of anything.

If I wasn't carrying that cash with me....

I would either, spend a certain period of time on a wheelchair, Or, five feet under.

I want to be upset with Enos, but then again, I invited myself into that house.

Enos was tied up on both limbs with handcuffs, there was nothing he could've done.

"He's a local." Enos said.

What's that suppose to mean?

"A local what?" I asked.

"Businessman. He owns casinos, bars, night clubs and whatever's lucrative."

"Oh?" I said. "You mean he's a pimp."

I understand exactly how such people operate. I worked at a strip club, so I get it.

Casinos are worse. Gambling is the beginning of problems.

"You gamble?" I dared to say.

Enough stared at me. "Of course not."

Okay.

"Then why are you in debt Enos?" I decided to sit up straight. "I'm trying not to intrude on your issues but am obviously failing."

I can't sit here with Enos and pretend that something very critical didn't happened earlier.

"I wasn't expecting you to keep quiet and avoid the topic. I'm extremely pissed at myself for dragging you into this." Disappointement flooding his demeanor .

"Sorry, I should've been more protective, calculated and smarter." Enos was starting to sound angry and hard on himself.

He was practically bounded. Restricted to even move.

There's not much he could've done.

"May be." I crossed my arms. "What happened wasn't okay. We could've died."

There's nothing sensible to justify that shit.

"I know." Enos rubbed his face with his palms, releasing an heavy breathe. "I will solve the issue tomorrow, so you don't have to feel unsafe. Especially around me. I could never hurt you Elisabeth." Honesty and firmness in his tone.

I can't be near him after what happened.

"I'm truly sorry."

I looked at him. "Stop going on about it. I understand that you are sorry. But that doesn't erase the fact that we had guns pointed at our faces."

Enos's lips parted, but he failed to speak.

It's scary. The way someone else can hold a weapon that has potential to take away your life. Its like they are robbing you the opportunity to choose for yourself whether to keep living or to die.

And it's even worse when that someone is a sociopath with no sense of remorse.

"I loaned that money for my father." He looked back at me. "Whatever I earn and any extra dollar available, goes to him."

I said slowly, "What?"

"He got paralyzed about a year ago." Enos averted his gaze from me. "Car accident."

Shit.

"After mother divorced him two years prior, the court decided she'd take the house and eighty five percent of everything they owned. My dad was denied custody of us. And ended up losing more than he should have."Enos breathed, fingers pressing the bridge of his nose, exhausted. "The accident happened on his way to Tennessee. I'm paying this woman to take of him. Apparently, there's nothing the doctors can do."

A knot grew against my throat.

Life is cruel.

A strange feeling stung my chest, like a punch to the heart. Enos has been trying to provide for both his dad and himself as the rest of us misjudged him. Especially his mother. That wasn't fair.

I suppose the reason Enos hasn't gone to college yet revolves around his father.

"Sorry about your dad."

He shrugged. "I promise to pay you back every cent."

"Its fine."

"No, it isn't." He said immediately. "This is my baggage to carry. I will return every penny."

I nodded.

I wanted to argue, but he had that stubborn exterior again.

He stood up from the bed.

"Where are you going?" I quickly asked.

He narrowed his eyes. "Down stairs to sleep. The sofa is in better condition than the beds in those guest rooms."

What!

"No." I blunted out.

He raised a brow. "Uh?!"

"I mean, just stay here. The bed is big enough for the both of us." I told him. "Besides, its more comfortable here than on that tiny sofa."

"Are you serious?" He crossed his strong arms. "Because I don't mind the coach."

Where did Enos take his shirt?

I stared at my lap instead.

"It's okay with me. There's an extra blanket on the closet." I assured.

He walked to it.

"I don't want you feeling uncomfortable." Enos affirmed, opening the large wooden closet.

"Don't be silly." I tapped the bed. "It is late and we both need some sleep."

It's been a long day.

And am to terrified to sleep alone. I can't get the image of that gun from my mind.

After a hot shower and changing into my pajamas, I settled under the warm covers along side Enos.

I tried falling asleep, FAILED.

I was beyond exhausted but sleeping wasn't working. At all.

"Is everything okay?" Enos asked lazily upon noticing my movements. He was beginning to drift away.

All I can think about are the guns, and Enos's blood on the carpet.

It took me back to the days of being prey to assault.

I shut my eyes.

"Enos." I whispered for him.

"Mmmh." He hummed in his sleep.

I moved closer to him.

"Can you cuddle me?" I sounded like a child. I hate the dark, and my ghosts aren't very discreet when the lights are out.

I thought Enos would protest on the request but,

"Sure." He opened his arms for me.

I snuggled closer to Enos as he wrapped his uninjured arm around me. Drawing me closer.

Falling asleep came easy after that.
