《Indelible Affairs》⚜️ Chapter 44⚜️

I approached Enos in the living after freshing up. He was laying on the coach listening to something on the radio. I noticed that he'd already taken a bath and dressed rather nicely. It made me wonder if he was still planning to come to Meghan's place with me.

I'll be bummed if he changed his mind.

"I returned the clothes, there on your bed." I informed.

Probably not the best place to keep dirty clothes, but I couldn't find a laundry basket anywhere. And they aren't really dirty. I'd taken a bath before sleeping last night. And the floor isn't optional.

He didn't respond but instead got off the coach.

A bit rude don't you think. But I'm obviously no better because Enos has always been good to me, and yet I manage to be extremely unresponsive or negativity responsive, which is worse than the former.

"I'll get the tool box and meet you at Meghan's house." Enos moved past me but I quickly held his hand.

He smells really nice up close.

I looked up at Enos to find he was already staring at me.

The way he roamed my face made me let go of his hand.

"Speak." He said.

I wanted to apologise but from how he appeared displeased, it made me change my mind.

We were approximately standing very close to each other. His chest a couple of centimeters from my face, and if either of us moved even a bit, our breathes would met.

"At what time is April arriving?" I asked instead.

He took a step back creating distance. "She'll be here soon."

"Okay."

He proceeded to walk away. His mood had completely changed. I know part of that is contributed by his mother. She's a harsh person to be frank. More than she needs to be.

And I literally kicked him out of the room . He let me stay here and I was being sorta ungrateful.

But Enos wasn't being discreet. I was practically half naked and he seemed carefree about it. He's probably been with a lot of women. Girls would practically throw themselves at him back in highschool. I recall the numerous occasions.

So seeing me topless was certainly not a big deal for him. I was aware of that.

But those girl's weren't covered in dark purple and black marks.

I didn't want him to keep looking at me. He showed no signs of crude judgement when he surveyed my top half. Just shock. But it still made me uncomfortable.

It took the three of us an entire morning and afternoon to finish cleaning the house. We had a short lunch break at two o'clock and proceeded working.

April is really fast with her hands and Enos handled fixing the pipes impressively. It was basically a team effort.

Enos took the radio with him. He said it'll be a great source of entertainment as we worked.

He was right.

The music made everything more pleasant.

"Look at this place." April opened her arms satisfied. "We did a good job." She praised.

I was relieved. Every corner of the house was tidy and organized. There aren't a lot of things inside the house. The living room has only a table and a coach. The kitchen got a microwave, fridge and stove. All the shelves are nearly empty.

The rooms have beds, empty woredrobes and that's it. Meghan cleared almost everything when they moved out.

I have to purchase a lot of groceries. The good things is, I carried my duvet and toiletries with me.

"I appreciate you guys offering to do this with me." I confessed.

April was standing in the middle of the living room and Enos sat by the stairs.

"It means alot."

They hardly know me but still chose to come around.

It would've taken me two days on my own.

April waved her hand. "I was bored anyways. Nothing worthwhile to do in this damn town, so it was my pleasure."

I smiled.

"I'll be outside." Enos announced, grabbing his radio and leaving.

He hasn't spoken much today. A few words here and there but that's about it.

He'd occasionally exchange words with April but not for longer than three minutes.

Enos hasn't spared me as much of a glance. He's been avoiding me since we got here.

I feel a bit offended.

"Tell me what happened." April came towards me.

"Uh?" I stared at her.

What is she referring to?

"Enos is not being himself. And I saw Aunt Kate's car parked on the driveway earlier this morning when I jogged past the house." April eyed me intuitively. "I want to know everything."

So Kate is the woman's name. Noted.

Why doesn't April ask Enos instead? Thought they're close.

"He left out details when I brought up the subject." She said as though reading my mind.

"I can sense when he's keeping secrets. I've known him for long enough to notice." April frowned.

"I don't think it's my place to tell you anything." I uttered truthfully.

If Enos hasn't opened up to April, then there reasons behind that. I won't intrude.

April rolled her eyes as though tedious.

"Enos asked me to give you something. He didn't hide parts of that arguement that involved you." April pulled out a small box from the pocket of her jacket that she tied securely around her waist.

I looked at it and frowned.

Seriously? Why would he get me that?

"Seems like hurricane Katherine included you in her everyday outbursts." She taunted.

A pregnancy test!

"What the fuck?" I glared at April.

"Enos mentioned that Kate is convinced you're prego. He bought this earlier during lunch break and insisted I urge you to check yourself."

I can't believe this.

April noticed my dissaproval.

"Don't get mad okay. I think Enos is right for wanting you to take that test. What if your pregnant?" She inquired. "Not with Enos's child of course."

"I would know if am pregnant. It's my body remember?" I defended. "There's no living being inside of me."

Right?

I seriously need to stop crossing myself.

We used protection. James isn't reckless in stuff like that.

Except for that one time, and we stopped in the middle of sex so he could wear the condom.

"Enos is concerned. He literally got a test for you and talked me into handing this." She held the box out for me. "Take it just to be sure. Kate has seven kids, she knows these kinds of stuff."

I'm tired of hearing about how reproductive Kate is.

I don't think you can recognize that a person is pregnant just from the way they stand and how shiny their hair is.

I grabbed the pregnancy test and went after Enos outside. He was sited at the balcony looking straight ahead.

"What is this?" I showcasted the little present he gave me. I stood infront of him, blocking his view.

I'm not happy about any of this.

It's none of his business.

"Don't you know what thats for?" He asked me.

Really!

"I don't mean the test." I said. "Why did you buy it for me?"

He furrowed his thick eyebrows.

"So you can be certain of whether you're having a kid or not." He said simply.

Ugh. I feel like grabbing him.

"Am not pregnant." I stated.

"Then what are you afraid of?" He locked eyes with me. "Take the test."

I shifted my gaze. "It's not about that Enos."

"That's the first time you called me by my name." He voiced.

"What?" I stared back at him.

He's changing the subject.

"You never did that."

Was he even paying attention?

"You told April." I reintroduced the subject. "Why did you not come to me yourself? Is it because of what happened in my room?."

Enos expression turned to a confused one. "What are you talking about?"

"C'mon. Don't act like you haven't been avoiding me because I asked you to leave the room." I said.

"What?" He stood up to level with me.

"You've given me the cold shoulder since earlier." I sounded rather upset. That wasn't the plan. I don't give a damn whether he speaks to me or not.

"That's what you think?" Enos shook his head.

Yes. Why else would he send April?

"Okay listen." He began. "I wanted April to give you that test because she is obviously a woman and am not. She was most likely to approach the matter in a better angle than me."

That makes sense.

Enos placed both his hands on my shoulders and fixed those blue eyes on mine. It was hard not to stare at them.

"Secondly, You asking me to leave the room earlier isn't the reason I was acting off with you."

"Then why?" My voice came out as a whisper.

He sighed.

"I was angry. Katherine riled me up and that fucked up my headspace. And then I saw the wounds on your body and that sorta bolted the anger into a higher level. I wanted to know who did that but you refused to tell me anything, and honestly, it pissed me off more." He explained.

"So let me get this straight, you're mad at me because I was reluctant to speak out?" I trailed.

"I'm not mad at you." He confirmed."Its the person who harmed you that upsets me. And the fact that nobody was there to stop it."

Something in the way Enos talked made me feel things. Why does he care so much?

"Then you should've told me, instead of letting me wonder constantly about it." I blunted out.

"You were thinking about me?" He grinned.

Wait!

"Not in that way." I rephrased. "I just don't want bad blood between us."

Enos gave a genuine smile.

"You have no friends in this town and dread the idea of turning into the lonely girl with the cats." He said, teasingly. "I understand."

I laughed, spanking his arm. "Don't be mean."

I've realised that Enos isn't a bad person.

Sure, he looks like a villain. But he is not dangerous.

"Are you taking the test then?" He asked me while releasing my shoulders.

"Yes." I replied.

He nodded. "Okay."

I can't be pregnant.

But the idea of taking this test scares me.

"What if it turns out positive?" I asked hesitantly.

I didn't look at him though.

"We'll figure something out." He held my hand and squeezed tightly. "Its going to be alright."

It perplexed me that Enos used the term 'We' in reference to the pregnancy thing.

I found April and Enos chilling at the front porch.

They were laughing about something.

April glanced over her shoulder when she heard me approach them.

"Are you pregnant?" She quickly questioned.

I took a seat next to her, handing her the pregnancy test.

"What does it mean?" Enos looked at the device curiously.

"She's pregnant."

I think Enos froze for a bit.

"Just kidding." April laughed out loud.

She's crazy.

Enos lightly pushed her towards me.

"You should've seen your face." April teased him. "As if you're the father."

"Shut up." He told her. "What a nuisance."

Thank God, I'm not having a baby.

I don't want kids.

Not now atleast.

Especially not with James.
