《Indelible Affairs》⚜️Chapter 43⚜️

Triple update.

I woke up due to the loud pounding of the front door. It was literally six o'clock in the morning.

Apparently Enos is a heavy sleeper since the banging went on for about a whole ten minutes.

Who could it be? The person sounds really pissed.

I groaned while leaving the guest room.

I'm still very exhausted from the journey and I slept really late. I shouldn't have stayed up with April and Enos drinking beer instead of resting after the flight.

I checked Enos's bedroom first, he wasn't in there.

Where did he go to?

Walking past the living room while adjusting the t-shirt Enos lent me, I approached the door to open it.

"Tell that useless son of mine to come over here right this instant." The tall blonde woman demanded harshly as she stood a few inches from the door.

I just stared at her, stunned by her choice of words in reference to her son.

And also surprised to met Enos's mother in such circumstances.

"Are you deaf? Do it now." She uttered, crossing her arms. Her cold brown eyes completely different from Enos's. The resemblance was undeniable though.

"He's not home." I replied, hesitant that I might get Enos into trouble by uttering the wrong response.

Her face clenched as she glared at me.

I probably shouldn't say good morning right now.

"Who are you? A girl he picked up?" She interrogated. "I can't believe Enos has the nerve to invite and live with a woman at this point. He's no different from his disgraceful father. Bunch of imbeciles."

I really couldn't say anything but look at her.

Why must she be so blunt?

I heard the backdoor open.

"Enos." The woman called out. She shoved me aside and stepped into the house.

I followed behind her reluctantly as she walked into the kitchen where Enos was.

"What are you doing here mother?" He questioned, confusion and discomfort in his features.

He wore jogging pants and a black sweatshirt. He must have gone for an early morning run. The sweat drenched cloths that plastered his fit body exposed his broad figure.

I looked away from his physic immediately.

"Eviction notice." She exclaimed. "Explain why I received a god damned eviction notice for this house on the mail this morning." She held a ripped envelop in her hand. Enos's mother was extremely upset for some reason and she wasn't hiding it.

I ignored the fact that they didn't bother greeting each other.

"I'll deal with it." Enos informed, standing straight.

"What happened to all the money in your account?" She questioned.

Silence.

May be I should go back to the guest room. I have a distinct feeling that am not suppose to hear any of this.

"And to top it all up, you've been living with that woman for God knows how long." She muttered while glaring at him. "What's the matter with you?"

Enos shifted his gaze from his furious mother to me, finally registering my presence in the room.

I thought he would deny that ridiculous accusations. But what he said next astounded me.

"That woman happens to have a name. And why so concerned? If I choose to stay with Elisabeth it's my business not yours." He replied intuitively. "My relationships have nothing to do with anyone."

Am at lose for words.

"Mind your tone Enos." She warned. "Am your mother."

Enos looked dull as he observed her. "Then start acting like it. You can't just refuse to talk and see me for months and then show up at my house like a mad woman. You basically avoid communication altogether as if you never gave birth to me."

Goodness.

"You should've left with that father of yours then." The woman billowed at him. "Seeing you took after that ungrateful foolish man anyways."

"No need to dig up the past and comparing us." Enos argued.

His mother fired, "Where did you take that money? You're unable to get anything done, spending hours in that trash trailer with the junkies and wasting valuable cash on this trump you're living with."

I swallowed when she refered to me, again.

Enos was indignant. And it showed on the way he looked at her.

He remained motionless even as he spoke. "I already told you, the rent will be paid. I'm fixing this."

"What was stopping you from handling it before. Look at these numbers." She flipped the papers in anger. "Five months Enos. Do you want me to remind you how hard it was for us to persuade Sheila to put this house on rent for you? It took months. And now you're sabotaging yourself."

"I've talked to her." He said simply. "Stop worrying."

"How can you tell me that? Stop worrying? Stop worrying?" She was popping off. "You're messing up your life. Did you even consider moving out this town like the rest of your brothers? You could be in college, with that high GPA you should be in princeton or Ivy league, but your throwing your life away."

I glanced at Enos.

I knew he was a smart student but I never realised the extent of his brilliance.

"You're beginning to be a rife in this town." She didn't hold back her tongue. "Am so ashamed of you."

And I was starting to feel sorry for Enos because his mother was brutally harsh when it comes to words.

Though Enos wasn't taken aback by her theatrics almost as if he's used to them.

"And then you got her pregnant." She pointed at me.

What?

"I mean no offense ma'am, but am not pregnant." I defended instantly.

Is she serious right now?

She shifted to face me properly. "The problem with young girls these days is that they aren't smart enough to realise when their knocked up. It's unbelievable how incredibly dumb these women can get."

I have a feeling she's turning tables and venting out her anger on me instead of whoever.

"Mother stop this." Enos voiced as he locked eyes with me. "You're being way out of line."

The tension was too thick to be cut by a knife.

She scoffed. "I've been pregnant seven times Elisabeth. I know a pregnant woman when I see one."

This woman doesn't even know me.

She's very wrong.

There's no freaking way that James got me pregnant.

We used protection.

She began, "Glowing skin, shiny hair, the way she stands. You've gotten that girl pregnant Enos. And I be damned because there's no chance I'd help raise that mistake."

Enos's mother is beyond insolent. Extremely rude.

Even if I was pregnant, in which am not, she has no right to talk that way.

And it's insane that she assumes I slept with her son and he got me pregnant. We met last night. Less than eight hours ago.

Why isn't Enos making that clear to her? He's only making matters worse for himself. She's getting more worked up and upset for nothing.

Unless that's what Enos wants.

"I'll be in my room." I informed then walked out of the kitchen.

I didn't look back even as Enos called out for me. I don't appreciate being dragged into their family feud.

The argument was kicking off. The sounds of spiteful exchange could be heard from each corner of the house.

I stared at myself in the mirror when I got to the bedroom. I had taken off Enos's t-shirt as I glared at my reflection.

I don't even look pregnant.

And the last time I had sex James used a condom.

Did he though?

Am absolutely certain that I heard the condom wrapper getting torn up before James positioned himself inside me.

There wasn't a single time we didn't use protection.

"What happened to you? Why are you covered in bruises?"

I jumped to cover myself up immediately upon hearing Enos's voice.

Shit.

I hadn't noticed the 'World War Enos's mother' was over.

How long was I staring at myself?

"Who gave you those?" He questioned again referring to the purple marks on my sides.

Enos was astounded. His dilated blue eyes gazing my exposed arms, concerned.

"Get out Enos." I told him, pressing the t-shirt over my chest. "Can't you knock."

I didn't want anyone to see these. I personally hate looking at them.

He leaned on the wall, folding his strong arms. "Did you report that to the police?"

Seriously.

"Leave the room." I pointed to the door. My voice was a bit hoarse. It gets that way in the morning.

"Is that why you returned to this town? Because you're running away from someone." He kept pushing. "Or did you come back because of the pregnancy?"

What's up with that pregnancy theory? I can't believe he actually agrees with his mother that am pregnant.

"That's a little far fetched don't you think?" I inquired.

I adjusted the shirt to hide the wounds.

The bruises were almost healed and ugly spots formed on the surface. It's been two weeks since the incident and the wounds are taking a while to recover.

"No point covering up since I've already seen everything." He stated. "Almost everything. Am figuring there's more."

Yes.

"I'm not hiding from anyone." I replied in reference to his previous question. "Now kindly exit because I want to shower."

He's making me slightly uncomfortable. Aside from James, nobody has seen alot of me. It's a good thing I have a bra and his shorts on.

Enos gave me his clothes last night to go to bed with. No wonder his mother quickly assumed am knocked up by her son.

"You're in hurry to leave for Meghan's house?" He asked.

That's not the case.

"Yes, there's too much work to do."

"Did my mother scare you off?" He sounded embarrassed but mostly dissappointed. "She tends to chase alot of people away."

Parents have issues and it gets alot to handle sometimes. I get it.

"She's quite different from you." I confessed. "Less polite."

"Am sorry she dragged you into this." He implored. "And it's nothing like what it appears to be. I'm half the things she says about me and I can explain."

"Save it." I said bluntly, he doesn't have to. "Don't bother explaining because I really don't care. It's none of my business. I want to leave right away so please excuse me."

Enos left the room, shutting the door behind him without uttering a word.

I saw the frown on his face as he walked away.

I didn't mean to be rude. But the sooner I leave this house, the better. He's starting to interrogate me about my scars and I refuse to open up.

Frankly, I don't want to speak about what happened with anyone. Especially Enos. It's not that I care about his opinion of me. That doesn't bother me, Enos can think as he pleases.

I'm honestly just trying to be different. I want to rely on myself before finding a shoulder to lean on.

I'm learning stuff like that now.

Somedays people won't be around, which is most days. I should be stronger than ever during moments such as that.

Am getting prepared.

The main reason I returned to this town is to find myself. Face my past and grow out of what I'd been through.

That's what am trying to accomplish.
