《lightning - jonah marais》chapter six

You rolled around in Jonah's bed, unable to sleep. You were worried about him; he'd been gone since 11:30 and it was nearing 2 in the morning. Every minute passing felt like an hour as you ran through possible scenarios in your head. What could he have said to her? How would she react to his anger? He never stood up to her, he let her run 80% of his life and she never saw him angry. Jonah only got angry about his relationship in private, then convinced himself it'd get better. Your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door handle clicking, sounding like someone was trying to get in and failing. You sat up, walking over to the door and opening it to find Jonah standing in front of you. He looked at your eyes and the sight you saw broke a little piece of your heart. His eyes were bloodshot and puffy, dried tears staining his cheeks. His hair looked as if he'd been pulling on it the whole walk home and he held one of his hands on the inside of his jacket. "Jonah?" you said quietly, trying to bring him back from the daze he'd fallen into. He sniffed and brushed past you, sitting down on the bed. You shut the door and walked over to him. You stood in between his knees, hands on your hips as you waited for him to speak. "What happ—oh. Okay, okay." you cooed as Jonah cut you off by launching his body into yours, his face buried in your sweatshirt and arm wrapped around your waist. You pulled him in closer, rubbing his back and running your hands through his hair. You felt him inhale deeply before letting out a weak sob into your body. "It's okay, Jo. I'm right here, you're okay." you said gently, feeling his body shaking with sobs against your own. You felt tears well up in your own eyes; you'd seen Jonah cry before but over sappy movies and animal shelter commercials. Not crying because he was hurting like the way he was hurting now. Jonah pulled away from you and you sat down next to him. You pulled at his arm that he was hiding in his jacket and gasped at his hand. Jonah's knuckles were bloody and scraped, purple bruises already forming. "Jonah, what happened?" you croaked, but his head hung low and he stared at the floor. "Bub, please." you whispered and he turned to you, tears still streaming down his cheeks. You let go of his arm and put your hands on either side of his face, wiping away the tears with your thumbs. His eyebrows furrowed as he let out another choked sob before speaking. At first, he opened his mouth and nothing but a squeak came out. You felt a stray tear escape your eye but you ignored it, all of your attention on Jonah. "She, she—fuck, I can't." he said, trying to compose himself. You stroked his cheeks and shook your head, "It's okay, take your time." "She cheated on me." he blurted out, and your heart felt like it was about to stop. You let go of his face and took a deep breath, "C'mon, let's get that hand cleaned up."

Jonah sat on the counter of the bathroom sink and you sat on the toilet, the first aid kit resting on your thigh. You took an antiseptic wipe across his bloody knuckles in an attempt to be gentle but still effectively clean them. Jonah hissed and you frowned, "I'm sorry Jo. I'm being as light as I can be." "I know," he sniffled, "it's okay." You threw the wipe away and began cleaned the cuts with a cotton swab with ointment on it, silence falling over the both of you. "I went to confront her about the things she said to you. I walked into the club and the first thing I see is her, sat at the bar on some guy's lap. I watched her kiss his neck and let him touch her." Jonah said in a shaky breath and you paused your work on his hand to look at him. "What the actual fuck? Did you talk to her?" you asked and he nodded. "I walked right up to her and told her we were done. No explanation or anything. Just a "we're done." and I left. I walked in circles outside the club for a while, and then sat in the alley." You wrapped his hand in gauze and a bandage to secure it, "I'm assuming you punched the wall." you said and he didn't answer but you knew you were right. "Jonah," you sighed, "I'm so sorry. You don't deserve any of this." He gave you a soft, teary eyed smile and mouthed a 'thank you.' "After I change can we go lay down, please?" he asked and you nodded, "Of course we can. Go put on something more comfortable."

After Jonah changed into some sweats and a tee, the two of you got under the covers, cuddling up to each other. He laid down beside you and pulled you into his chest, tangling his legs in with yours. "You're warm." you said and he chuckled, the vibrations rumbling in his chest. "I'm sorry for making you cry." Jonah said and you looked up at him, "You didn't make me cry, stop it. I just hated to see you so upset because you deserve so much better." you explained. "Why was I not good enough for her, Y/N? I did my best to make her happy and show her I loved her. I thought she felt the same, but now I feel pathetic." he said sadly and you cuddled into his chest closer, if possible. "Hey, you were not the problem. If she couldn't see how amazing you are than that's her fault. You're more than enough Jo, I promise you. You aren't pathetic, bub." Jonah sighed and let his cheek rest against your forehead, the scruff on his face scratching your skin. "Thank you, I love you so much." "I love you more. Get some sleep, we can get breakfast in the morning." you hummed. Jonah let go of you briefly to shut off the light then went back to holding you. "Might have to be brunch because you're grumpy in the morning." Jonah mumbled and you poked his stomach, "Sleep, Marais."
