《A Mob Boss's Honour》30. Being Closer

Eden entered her first class of the day and walked to her seat. The bell had not gone yet and no one was in the class. She liked being early. She took out her equipment and placed it on the table. She opened her notebook and placed her pen next to it. She then crossed her arms over her chest and started looking around her at the wall posters. As she was looking around she thought of Luigi.
Eden had not seen Luigi that morning. The boys's football team had some kind of indoors training that day so she had not seen him when she had her cheer practice that morning before school. She was not sure what to think of Luigi. He had so many positive points about him but there were some parts of his personality and his actions that Eden wished he change. She did not like his cocky and bossy attitude much but it came with him being a jock. As much as she wanted to ignore him and give him the silent treatment after their confrontation yesterday, she decided against it. Something inside her told her to trust Luigi. She trusted him like she trusted no other boy. He was just so genuine and sincere. He had traits that annoyed her but no one was perfect in this world. Eden knew she was not perfect too. So she was going to let Luigi's bossy side slide and carry on as normal with being his classmate and project partner in lessons. She was annoyed that she had given him the opportunity to win a bet. Now she had to honour the bet whenever he asked her to. He had taken his time pretending to think about what she should do for losing the bet but he had finally with a smirk had told her, he will inform her soon about this.
Luigi was eating from a pack of chips as he came inside the class with his back pack on his shoulder. He said "Hello Eden."
Eden had been looking at one of the posters on the wall and had not noticed his entrance though the door. Eden turned to look at him "Hi..."
Luigi walked to where she was sitting "You are early to this class."
Eden said "So are you..."
Luigi sat down next to her and placed his bag of chips on the table as he took off his back pack and put it on the floor. He shrugged "I went to the cafeteria and asked around about where you were... Your brother said you came to your class. Do you want some chips." He offered his chips packet to Eden
Eden sighed "No. I do not want any chips. It is too early to eat chips. I guess you jocks burn so many calories I guess you have to have fuel in your tank all the time... Anyways why were you looking for me?..."
Luigi said "I was just wondering why you were not around... I kind of wanted to hang out with you at breakfast you know... To maybe talk about our projects..."
Eden said "Normally I would have been in the cafeteria but I kind of had enough of the scenes in front of me..."
Luigi frowned "What do you mean?" He then put the last chip in his mouth, he walked away and put the empty packet of chips in the bin "What kind of Scenes?"
Eden said "It is nothing really. You know when two people need to get a room, it is hard to watch..."

Luigi said as she sat down next to Eden "Who needed to get a room?"
Eden said "My brother and the school newspaper student editor, Linda Lawrence... Linda and Ethan were flirting so openly it was crazy. Linda has recruited him as the school newspaper's photographer because he knows so much about photography. They have known each other for like a day and they can't stop talking and flirting. She is in almost in all his lessons and they just have clicked. I have no words. Ethan is almost a different person when he is with her. It is quite strange..."
Luigi said "Is it that bad? I can have a word with them if their open relationship bothers you? I can tell them to cool it off."
Eden shook her head "No. It may look normal to others what they do. But not to me... Ethan has never been like this with any girl. He has always been helpless with girls. I am not used to Ethan being like this. He is different when he is with this girl. It takes time for me to get used to it. That is all. I could have talked to them myself but I decided against it. I do not want you to talk to them either. You know, my brother is very open with me. If you tell him off he may start hiding things from me. I am serious Luigi do not do anything. Ok? I will get used to it."
Luigi said "Ok. I won't. If that is what you want... But if it continues to bother you and you do not get used to it, I think I will have a word with him..." He then picked up his back pack and took out his equipment and placed it on the table.
Just then the bell rang and the rest of the lesson went as normal. Near the end of the lesson the teacher asked everyone to pack away their equipment and remain seated. He had said he had an announcement to make.
When everyone was ready, silent and listening the teacher stood in front of his blackboard and said "Class. I would like to announce that our school has finally agreed to allocate funding and resources for us to start the Future Scientists Club. You can sign up from today to attend this club."
The class started cheering. Eden looked around and noticed everyone was cheering and she did not understand why. She looked at Luigi and saw that he looked indifferent. Only him and Luigi were not cheering.
Eden put her hand up.
The teacher asked for silence and then said "Yes Eden... What is your question?"
Eden asked "What is this club about?"
The teacher said "Our school has been trying to join the syndicate of schools that run this program. It is an exciting opportunity for any student to participate. This club involves everything a student interested in science with a curious mind can ever ask for. I think you really could be asking what is this club not about. There are exciting projects leading to participation in national competitions. The rewards are so worth the hard work and dedication this club needs. The theory and the practical aspects are so advanced. But with the enthusiasm and the academic ability I see in our year group I can see this project taking off into opening a world of opportunities for all the participants that make it to the end. Guaranteed college scholarships and internships are up for grabs at the end of this academic year alone for selected students who contribute the most. I know you are not in your senior year yet, but even some colleges are participating here. Even if you do not want to study science in College they will take into account your contribution to the projects in this club when you apply. This club is also about team work and research skills and not just about science."

Eden was definitely interested. She was going to sign up and looked forward to it. She liked science and the opportunities this club offered sounded great. She liked learning more about science in projects. So the awards came as bonus if they won. And if they did not win anything she was sure she was going to learn so many new skills.
A student put his hand up "Sir. Who will be the club president? A student has to lead the entire team... Who have you picked from this year group sir?"
The teacher walked right upto to Eden's desk and pointed to Luigi "I nominated Luigi Alessandrini. The head of science department has approved it."
This was news to Luigi "You want me to lead this club sir?:" His voice was drowned as everyone started clapping.
Eden was confused why everyone was clapping for Luigi. How popular could he be? He had just started in this school last week just like how she had.
The teacher asked for silence and then students put their hands up one by one and spoke "We will win for sure..." The other student said "Yes. Luigi's school won so many top awards for their future scientists club last year..." Another one said "Luigi lead the team to success. We are so lucky he joined this school sir. His old school is now a club president short." The rest of the class cheered again.
Eden was listening and taking in the information. So Luigi was a scientist leader jock.
Luigi was shaking his head "Sir. I think I may have too many timetable clashes. I have hardly any room on my timetable to fit anything else." This was an excuse. He had done all this before. He thought his days of science club presidency was over. He just preferred to spend more time with doing more fun things in his own time. He could manage with adding this club to his current timetable. No problem there.
The teacher said as the class were cheering and excitedly talking to each other. "Luigi. I have checked your schedule. I have made sure the club's timetable does not clash with anything else at all on your schedule. I assure you, there will be no problems there. Luigi we need you to lead this club. We have no other student here who has any experience of doing anything even remotely close to this big. I can guarantee that any demands you make from the science department it will be granted. We just want you to be the one to lead it."
Luigi could see this guy sounded almost desperate. He knew exactly why. This club was no normal high school club. It had sharp deadlines from external companies and institutions. It needed someone with good academic scores in science which he had acquired from his old school that was kind of a science specialist school. The person becoming club president had to be a strong leader good at being on top of what everyone did and how they contributed too. He had acquired those skills from his football captain days in his old school too. He was good at paper work and record keeping too.
The teacher continued "I can not find anyone as qualified as you Luigi. You have done this before... We need you to take this role..."
Luigi said "Fine. I will do it..." He liked to take on this challenge even though he had done it before in his old school.
Eden noticed how the teacher looked relieved now. He asked the class for silence and then he informed the class of the list of rules to follow in the club and gave them information about how it worked. Eden was blown away. The club presidents in this school had almost the same authority as the class teachers in some ways. They could sanction and even make detention referrals if needed. So much was at stake, it made sense.

Gabriela had gone over the Irish School during lunch time to hang out with Ciara in the Irish school. Sean had been busy with some kind of assessments that ran over lunch time for some reason. So he was going to have his lunch in the assessment room that day. Gabriela found the guy annoying. He just did not let Ciara breathe.
Gabriela was sitting opposite Ciara and having lunch. They were talking about different topics ranging from school to personal life. They got on well together. They just did.
Gabriela noticed Dina and Sorcha entering the cafeteria and the splitting up. She watched them as they chose their male victims and ambushed them. Gabriela said "Seriously? They are performing their hunting rituals here too? How can they be allowed? This school has rules."
Ciara said "Don't worry. They would not go too far. They just like to scare the boys. They do not really hurt the boys really unless the boys insult them or insult their friends. They just like to see fear in these boys... Its just mostly threats what they are throwing around. Ignore them..."
Gabriela said "I do not understand these girls at all... Why do they get thrills from scaring boys off." She then got on with eating.
Ciara said "Gabriela... We both know that we do what they do sometimes too."
Gabriela said " We do not go hunting for males... We do not target random by-standers. But if a boy deserves our wrath, he will get it from us..."
Ciara smiled "I guess... Anyways. Where is Eden? Why didnt you bring her over here for lunch?"
Gabriela said "Eden and Lena had to go to the school newspaper office to have lunch with their team. Eden was supposed to attend this lunch meeting with the school newspaper team and did not want to go alone because she felt that her brother flirting with Linda Lawrence, the school newspaper student editor could really make her lose the plot and needed some friend to distract her.. Lena volunteered to go with her. Eden was very happy and even was hoping Lena to give writing articles a try. Who knows?"
Ciara said "Lena is such a sweet girl. She always tries to help other students. But again Eden is so nice to everyone too. Eden deserves support when she needs it. I am so glad Lena and Eden decided to join this school. They are our kind of girls..."
Gabriela said "I know. Imagine if you had to be stuck with those two at lunch times..." She nodded towards the direction of Sorcha and Dina. "They are insanely immersed into their male hunting ways... I wonder who they would take to the home coming dance with them. Which boys would be brave enough to be their companions?"
Ciara said "Actually about that... I wanted to tell you about this but it totally slipped my mind... I wonder what you think of it all." She then explained the arrangements for the homecoming dance and the arranged pairings between Dina and Connor as well as Sorcha and Dean.
Gabriela said with shock "This is insane. I can't believe it... And they have made the pairing permanent too you say? They are actually dating now officially?"
Ciara said "I know... Tell me about it... My brother and Dina? Seriously? I can't see it..."
Gabriela said "And Dean... Has he finally agreed to settle with Sorcha? How is that going to work? Dean does not settle for one girl for long. It does not matter if Sorcha is pretending or whatever it is she has agreed to do with Dean, she will not put up with Dean ever getting close to another girl on her watch. How is Dean going to break up with her and move on to another relationship with another girl without causing his new girlfriend pain at the hands of Sorcha. I know Sorcha. She is not the type of girl a guy can walk over. No chance... I know Dean might try to protect his girl whoever she maybe but Sorcha will attack until she hits the target, if you know what I mean. That girl is persistent."
Ciara said "If they break up it will be a mutual break up Gabriela. That is what Sean agreed with both couples. They date and they end it mutually."
Gabriela said "Ok. I do not have much worry about Connor. I am sure whatever way Connor chooses to break up, he treats his lady, Dina so well, she will not be too upset if he broke up. I doubt Dina would hurt Connor's new girlfriend when they decide to break it off. I just can't see it. Connor just is so considerate when treating girls that no ex-girlfriend of his would want to take revenge on his new girl. Even Dina..."
Ciara said "Well. Even if Dina decided to take revenge when they break up I am pretty sure Connor would try to protect his new girlfriend... But again Dina is like Sorcha. She strikes until the victim falls. However, I think you might be right..."
The girls talked for a while and then they said goodbye. Lunch time was not yet finished and there was still time until the bell. Ciara wanted to go to the library to borrow a book and Gabriela wanted to go to the astronomy club floor to make a booking for using the new telescope that was popular amongst the students for doing their research.
Gabriela made her way to the building that was her destination. She entered and walked up the stairs and reached the astronomy floor. She saw the astronomy booking room to be locked. She sighed. She had to find someone with the key. As she walked away and looked around, she noticed a room with an open door. She walked to the room and then saw that the sign said it was the storage room of the astronomy club. She entered the room and saw Christian who was opening a carboard box most likely containing new equipment.
Gabriela said "Christian."
Christian turned quickly "Gabriela?" Here she was again. His girl coming to him. He did not know why she was there. She normally spent her lunch time with her group of man hating girls' club but he was not complaining. If she was there, bonus. Who cared why.
Gabriela said "I just came by to make a booking to use the new telescope this week. The door is locked to that booking office for astronomy club equipment. Do you have a key by any chance?"
Christian said "I have a key..." He then stared at her not moving.
Gabriela sighed. She knew what he was waiting for "Well... Can you come and open that door for me ... please?"
Christian said "Of course. When you ask nicely the answer is likely to be yes..." He then walked towards the door.
Gabriela shook her head. He liked winding her up for some reason. He got a kick out of it.
Christian walked to the door of the booking office and unlocked it for Gabriela. He opened the door and said "After you... Ladies first..."
Gabriela entered and walked to the notebook where she had to record her booking.
Christian walked towards her "Do you know how to work with this new telescope?"
Gabriela said as she was writing her details in the boxes "No... I will read the manual... That is the only way... No one else knows how to work with it... Its brand new... I would love someone to give me training on how to use it..."
Christian said "I can give you training if you want..."
Gabriela looked up "You can? Really?"
Christian said "Yes. As club president I had to attended a whole day of training on using it and do some calculations with it. I can share with you my notes on example calculations that you are meant to be doing for our newest project too with this new telescope."
Gabriela said "You actually will help me?"
Christian said "Yes."
Gabriela said "Ok. So can I add your name please on here next to mine for this booking slot?"
Christian said "Of course. You ask nicely, I grant your request."
Gabriela said "Thank you. I appreciate it. It will save me time from reading the pages and pages of the manual." She then started writing Christian's name next to the time slot she had booked right next to her name.
Christian walked towards her and then stood behind her watching her write his name down.
Gabriela said as she was looking down "Can you even make this time slot. Are you free then?"
Christian said "Yes..." He thought to himself "Even if I couldn't make this time I would make time. For you I am always free."
Gabriela put the pen down and said "Great. You are one busy guy. It is hard to find slots when you are available... I guess it's my lucky day. Huh?"
Christian thought to himself "I am available ... and single by the way. Don't you forget that. Drop by any time. And oh no Gabriela. It's my lucky day. Not yours." Christian shrugged and didn't reply.
Gabriela turned to face him and said "Christian. Thank you. I owe you again... See you later..." She then walked away.
Christian said "See you later..." He then thought to himself "She owes you again... Really? She actually thinks you are doing her a favour. Wow... Just wow. She actually thinks that I am doing her a favour by agreeing to spend some alone one to one time with her that she willingly volunteered for. How did my life come to this." He smiled. He then started doing summersaults in the room as part of his celebrations.
****
Ciara was standing at the check out desk in the library borrowing a book when she felt suddenly around her became emptier suddenly. It was bizzare having a Sean effect when Sean was supposed to be doing an assessment right now.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
